Morphological and immunohistochemical analysis of unilateral testicular hypoplasia in an XY calf: correlation with the timing of bovine hypospadias.

Hypospadias is a common disorder of sex development (DSD), resulting from the impaired formation of the penile urethra. In mammals, penile urethral development depends on androgens secreted during a limited time window immediately after the onset of testis development. In this study, we performed morphological and immunohistochemical analyses of a 15-day-old genetically XY Holstein calf with perineal hypospadias to characterize a unique phenotype providing critical insights into its pathogenic mechanisms. Although the penis and prostate were grossly developed, the penile urethra was not formed

No urethral recurrences in complete responders after neoadjuvant chemotherapy and cystectomy for muscle-invasive bladder cancer.

OBJECTIVE: The Gold standard treatment for muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) in medically fit patients is neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), followed by radical cystectomy (RC), usually urethra-sparing. Swedish guidelines recommend yearly urethroscopies for 5 years post-RC to detect urethral recurrences (URs). Evidence is limited regarding optimal urethral surveillance in the NAC-era for patients with MIBC. The goal was to evaluate UR-frequency across NAC-response groups: complete response (CR), i.e. pT0N0M0, and Non-CR-responses (partial response, stable disease, and progressive disease), co

Maternal health in women with spina bifida: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of women with spina bifida are reaching reproductive age and may consider pregnancy. However, limited evidence on how spina bifida affects maternal health can hinder tailored counseling and guidance, contributing to uncertainty during pregnancy-related decision-making. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to synthesize existing literature on maternal health among women with spina bifida, focusing on pregnancy and childbirth outcomes, women's health-related outcomes, care needs, and health-related decision-making across pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting cont

Is Temporary Incontinent Vesicostomy Associated With Fewer Early Urinary Outflow-Related Complications After Pediatric Ileocystoplasty?

AIMS: Pediatric augmentation ileocystoplasty carries a risk of urinary outflow-related complications (ORC), including anastomotic leakage, obstruction of the catheterizable stoma, and febrile urinary tract infection. We evaluated whether temporary incontinent vesicostomy (TIV) reduces early ORC and emergency readmissions, and whether it affects 24-month function. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 168 children who underwent perimesenteric ileal augmentation with a catheterizable continent stoma between 2000 and 2023: TIV (n = 133) versus no TIV (n = 35). The primary endpoint was ORC within

Paraurethral Endometrioid Carcinoma Arising From Ectopic Endometriosis: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Malignant transformation of endometriosis is rare and most commonly involves the ovary; transformation from paraurethral endometriosis is exceedingly rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 73-year-old postmenopausal woman with prior ovarian endometrioma presented with dysuria and voiding difficulty. Positron emission tomography-computed tomography revealed a paraurethral mass at the bladder neck, whereas cystoscopy and urine cytology were normal. Transvaginal biopsy demonstrated adenocarcinoma; however, immunohistochemistry did not identify the primary site. After radical cystectomy with ur

Making cancer support services sustainable in value-based care.

Bulking agents are used in the treatment of urinary stress incontinence associated with intrinsic sphincter deficiency. Bovine collagen remains the gold standard despite problems such as allergic reaction and absorption of the injected material. Several new products are being evaluated or used clinically to try and overcome problems linked with bovine collagen. The aim of this paper is to review the bulking agents available and to put in prospect use of these products with the recent progress made in the treatment of urinary stress incontinence. The gold standard treatment for intrinsic sphinc

Evaluation of lighted catheter phototherapy in endoscopic treatment of urethral strictures: a rabbit pilot study.

PURPOSE: To improve the success of minimally invasive urethral stricture treatments with red and near-infrared (NIR) light emitted via catheters after direct vision internal urethrotomy (DVIU). We hypothesized that catheter-emitted light therapy would improve success rate and histologic wound characteristics. METHODS: Twenty-four male New Zealand rabbits underwent stricture induction by electroresection and then were randomized into three groups: red light catheter (650 nm wavelength), NIR light (810 nm wavelength), or control (no light). After DVIU, a catheter was inserted for 7 days providi

Concurrent extension of bladder cancer to the intramural ureter and prostatic urethra increases the risk of urethral cancer in patients undergoing radical cystectomy.

PURPOSE: Bladder cancer extension to the prostatic urethra is a well-known risk factor for urethral recurrence. This study investigated whether concurrent involvement of the intramural ureter, in addition to the prostatic urethra, further increases the urethral cancer risk. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 316 male patients who underwent radical cystectomy for bladder cancer between 2002 and 2020. We assessed the prevalence of tumor extension to the prostatic urethra and intramural ureter and evaluated its association with synchronous and metachronous urethral cancer. Synchronous urethral

Postvoided Residual/Bladder Emptying: A Mini Review.

Postvoid residual (PVR) urine volume is widely used in the evaluation of patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and benign prostatic obstruction (BPO), yet its clinical role remains debated. This mini review critically appraises current evidence on the definition, pathophysiology, measurement, and clinical utility of PVR. PVR reflects impaired bladder emptying and is influenced by multiple mechanisms, including bladder outlet obstruction, detrusor underactivity, and altered sensory function. However, its diagnostic accuracy for identifying specific conditions is limited by high inte
