INTRODUCTION: Radical nephroureterectomy is the gold standard treatment for non-metastatic upper tract urothelial carcinoma. It is a major surgery associated with significant morbidity, particularly in elderly and frail patients. The modified five-factor frailty index (mFI-5) is a recently used tool to predict postoperative outcomes. This index has been established as a prognostic factor in several cancers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of mFI-5 on the oncological prognosis of patients treated with a Radical Nephroureterectomy for non-metastatic upper tract urothelial

BACKGROUND: Central pancreatectomy is a parenchyma-sparing procedure indicated for benign or low-grade malignant lesions located in the pancreatic neck or proximal body. Despite its functional advantages, postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) remains the most common complication because pancreatic reconstruction is required. Although internal pancreatic duct stents are commonly used, conventional straight stents may be limited by terminal obstruction or restricted drainage outlets. A tailored double-J ureteral stent segment may provide an alternative internal drainage configuration during pa

The patient is a man in his 60s referred with a diagnosis of ascending colon cancer with right ureteral invasion, hydronephrosis, and right psoas muscle and nerve invasion. Complete resection in a single stage was deemed difficult during surgery, and chemotherapy was selected as the treatment plan. Given the MSI-H status, pembrolizumab was selected as the primary therapy. Twelve courses were administered. Following the normalization of tumor markers and imaging-based tumor shrinkage, improvement in ureteral and psoas muscle invasion was observed, enabling conversion surgery (right hemicolectom

Secondary iliopsoas abscess arising from colorectal cancer is uncommon and diagnostically challenging. We report a woman in her 50s with locally recurrent sigmoid colon cancer who developed a massive gas-forming left iliopsoas abscess during capecitabine, oxaliplatin and bevacizumab. The acute presentation was severe, with altered consciousness reported before ambulance transfer, marked inflammatory response and need for urgent CT-guided drainage and intensive monitoring. Previous Escherichia coli bacteraemia, bilateral ureteral stents, polymicrobial anaerobic abscess flora and bevacizumab exp

Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is a rare and aggressive malignancy, accounting for only 5-10% of all urothelial carcinomas (UCs). Lung, bone, liver, and distant lymph nodes are common sites of metastasis, while gastrointestinal metastasis is extremely rare. We present a case of a 63-year-old female who developed a descending colon lesion 19 months after left radical nephroureterectomy for high-grade ureteral UC. The diagnosis was established by computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), colonoscopy, and biopsy, which excluded primary colorectal malignancy. First-line

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is one of the most prevalent oncological diseases, with rectal cancer accounting for a substantial proportion of cases. Surgical intervention remains the cornerstone of treatment, with its success significantly influenced by individual pelvic anatomy. Nevertheless, there is a notable scarcity of studies specifically focused on evaluating surgical complexity based on pelvic MRI pelvimetry.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the prognostic factors of pelvic MRI pelviometry that affect the complexity of surgical treatment of rectal tumors.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) of the head and neck is a rare but rapidly progressive and life-threatening soft tissue infection that constitutes a true surgical emergency. Due to the complex anatomy of the cervicofacial region and the proximity to the upper airway, early diagnosis and management are particularly challenging, and delayed recognition is associated with high morbidity and mortality. This article aims to provide a concise and clinically oriented overview of the presentation, diagnostic pitfalls, and current management strategies for cervicofacial necrotizing fasciitis.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm with a low incidence, and pelvic SFT is extremely uncommon. Due to its insidious onset and nonspecific imaging features, preoperative diagnosis is difficult. We reported a 34-year-old male patient with a giant pelvic SFT found incidentally during physical examination, complicated with left hydronephrosis and hydroureter. Preoperative imaging revealed a large heterogeneous enhanced mass in the pelvic cavity. Robot-assisted laparoscopic resection of the tumor was performed successfully, accompanied by simultaneous ureteral reimplantatio

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare fibroblastic neoplasms that can occur at various anatomical sites, including the pleura, retroperitoneum, and pelvis. Although surgical resection remains the mainstay of curative treatment, pelvic SFTs often present as giant hypervascular tumors, making intraoperative bleeding control particularly challenging.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old man presented with progressive abdominal distension, constipation, and dysuria. CT revealed a large pelvic mass measuring 200 × 176 × 140 mm, with multiple intratumoral vessels and areas of necrosis a

Urothelial carcinoma (UC) is a highly malignant urinary cancer of the transitional epithelium in dogs. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning have shown substantial potential in veterinary medicine. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of AI-based software in detecting UC in dogs using abdominal radiography and to identify factors that influence the sensitivity of AI-based diagnosis. Dogs underwent abdominal radiography, and ultrasound was retrospectively retrieved. Dogs with histologically confirmed UC and ultrasound changes were included in UC

Renal-pelvic fibroepithelial polyps (FEPs) are rare benign mesodermal lesions that can radiologically and clinically mimic urothelial carcinoma, sometimes prompting radical surgery. We reviewed five consultation cases of renal pelvis or proximal-ureter FEPs, integrating histology, immunohistochemistry, and targeted molecular testing. Patients were all females, tumors measured 3.3-9.0 cm (mean 5.2 cm), and four arose in the renal pelvis with variable ureteral extension. Three patients underwent nephroureterectomy for presumed malignancy. Histologically lesions shared a polypoid architecture wit

PURPOSE: Advances in drug discovery and early clinical development depends fundamentally on robust pre-clinical research and a comprehensive understanding of cancer biology. There is an international effort to reduce the use of animals in research and product development, with a focus on technical advances to build better in vitro models. Three-dimensional (3D) cell culture mimics the architecture of solid tumors and could be validated as an alternative method to animal use in research and development, promoting faster and more.

RATIONALE: Pyelonephric giant cell tumor of soft tissue represents an exceptionally uncommon neoplasm of the urinary tract with limited malignant potential. It typically follows a benign clinical trajectory, with distant metastases occurring infrequently; reports of aggressive disease culminating in lethal multiorgan dissemination are exceedingly rare. The present case seeks to augment the clinical dataset and elucidate the features of its malignant transformation.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 72-year-old male presented with a 3-day history of persistent right-sided low back pain, without fever, gross

BACKGROUND: Divergent differentiation (DD) and histological subtypes (HS) represent rare but clinically meaningful forms of upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC), but their prognostic impact remains incompletely understood. We assessed the incidence, clinicopathological characteristics, and oncologic outcomes associated with DD-HS in a large multi-institutional cohort of patients undergoing radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) for non-metastatic UTUC.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 3,441 patients treated between 1985 and 2022 across 22 institutions. Tumors were classified as pure urotheli

BACKGROUND: Large, non-pancreatic pseudocysts are rare pathologies that present as lesions in the intra-abdominal wall or peritoneal cavity. These cases can be diagnostically difficult, particularly in situations where fine-needle aspiration yields nonspecific cytology and imaging is also often nonspecific and nondiagnostic. These lesions may mimic hematomas, seromas, cystic neoplasms, and other bowel-related pathologies, which may require surgical excision for definitive diagnosis and curative treatment.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case of a 73-year-old male with a body mass index of 43 w

Robot-assisted radical nephroureterectomy (RANU) is increasingly used for upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC), yet most published series are selected and real-world data from consecutive, unselected practice are scarce. We reviewed 100 consecutive RANU performed at a single institution between April 2022 and March 2026, including six cases with a concomitant procedure. Median age was 77 years and 39 patients had pT3-4 disease. Median estimated blood loss was 29 mL, operative time 200 min, and console time 141 min; three patients required transfusion. BACKGROUND: Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) includes renal pelvic and ureteral carcinoma, and radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) is the standard surgical treatment for nonmetastatic disease. Despite complete resection, postoperative intravesical recurrence (IVR) occurs in 22% to 47% of patients. It is generally recognized that ureteral tumor exhibits a higher incidence of IVR compared with renal pelvic tumor. However, the immunological mechanisms underlying this difference remain poorly understood.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 26 patients with UTUC without variant histology who unde
