A remnant never forgotten: the utility of circulating tumor DNA in treatment guidance of urachal cancer.

Urachal cancer is a rare malignancy of the urachus that is treated with surgical resection if localized and systemic chemotherapy for metastatic disease. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is a single-stranded or double-stranded DNA released by tumor cells into the blood and harbored the mutations of the original tumor, shedding new light on molecular diagnosis and monitoring of cancer. We report a case of resected localized urachal cancer with clear surgical margins and negative lymph node dissection but elevated ctDNA that progressed to metastatic disease. We also highlight the possibility of usi

Retrospective analysis of factors associated with umbilical diseases in foals.

In neonatal foals, umbilical remnants can be affected by infectious and non-infectious diseases. This study aimed to retrospectively evaluate historical, management and clinical factors that may be related to the occurrence of umbilical remnant diseases. Clinical reports of foals born or hospitalized within 24 h of life during the 2017-2021 foaling seasons were reviewed. Forty/183 foals (21.9 %) developed umbilical remnant diseases (URD group), while 143/183 foals (78.1 %) had normal umbilical remnants (NUR group). In the URD group, 24/40 (60 %) had a patent urachus, 16/40 (40 %) omphalo-arter

Investigation of preinguinal approach for removal of urachal abscess in three Japanese black cattle older than 18 months of age.

This study investigated the diagnostic and surgical management of urachal abscessation involving the urinary bladder in three cattle aged >18 months. While the abdominal floor or paralumbar fossa are typically considered for accessing the urachus and bladder in calves and heifers, the distance is too great to perform the procedure under direct vision in adult cows. Therefore, a novel preinguinal approach was used for access in cows with urachal abscesses after 18 months. Access was successfully achieved in all the three cows through a preinguinal incision to the urachal abscess at the apex of

MYRF mutation leads to a single manifestation of sexual development and mimics partial androgen insensitivity syndrome: a case report and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: To highlight the challenges in diagnosing 46, XY disorder of sex development related to MYRF mutation. METHODS: We present an unusual case of a 12-year-old female child came for enlargement of clitoris and initially diagnosed as partial androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS). RESULTS: On examination, the patient's vulva was found virilized with 3cm-long clitoris. Her peripheral blood karyotype was 46, XY. The ultrasound showed an empty pelvis and hormone results confirmed hyperandrogenism. Therefore, the partial AIS was suspected, but the following whole exon sequencing indicates a

The anatomy and pathology of the space of Retzius.

The space of Retzius is an important anatomic location for pathology. Pathology in the space of Retzius is more common than previously believed, especially as more cases are discovered with increased use of cross-sectional imaging. Knowledge of the anatomy of the Space of Retzius is crucial for identifying and distinguishing between benign and pathological findings. This paper uses several case examples to discuss benign etiologies, including normal tissue or a foreign body. The paper also demonstrates a case series with pathologic findings in the Space of Retzius under the broad categories of

Estimation of the incidence of urachal cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis of registry-based studies.

BACKGROUND: Urachal cancer (UrC) is a rare disease with limited availability of representative incidence and clinical data. Although, the prevalence is accounting for less than 1% of bladder tumors, the 5-year survival rate is around only 50% for patients with resectable tumors, and even worse for patients with metastatic disease. Due to the lack of comprehensive prospective studies, our current knowledge of UrC is still limited. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to summarize the available registry-based studies with unselected UrC patients to evaluate its incidence and clinicopathological c

A diagnostically challenging case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor primary to the peritoneum.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors are difficult to diagnose because of the lack of specific indicators. We describe a diagnostically challenging case of an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor primary to the peritoneum. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 25-year-old male who presented at our hospital with lower abdominal pain. Computed tomography revealed a mass lesion 80 mm in diameter just above the bladder. This was suspected to be a bleeding tumor of the urachus. Since malignancy could not be ruled out, surgery was planned. This revealed a fragile tumor arising from the pe

Calcification within the urachus: A case report of rare presentation of urachal cyst with calculus formation.

Urachal anomalies are rare congenital lesions of the genitourinary tract and are important causes of pediatric and adolescent hospital presentations. It can mimic many other causes of intraabdominal pathology and fever, and pose diagnostic challenges, often aided by imaging, is crucial to prevent complications such as infection and calculus formation. Surgical intervention, preferably laparoscopic, is the primary treatment, with complete excision necessary to avoid potential malignant transformation.

Primary urachal adenocarcinoma: Case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Primary urachal adenocarcinoma (PUA) is a rare form of cancer that arises from the urachus, a vestigial remnant of the allantois and cloaca during embryonic development. The exact pathogenesis of PUA is not well understood, but it is believed to arise from glandular epithelium remnants within the urachus. The rarity of this type of cancer makes it difficult to comprehensively study its epidemiology. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a 47-year-old male patient who presented with intermittent painless hematuria and fatigue for two months. Cystoscopy show

Urachal mixed adenocarcinoma and small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma with widespread metastasis and resistance to chemotherapy: a case report.

Neuroendocrine carcinoma arising from the urachus is extremely rare. We describe a case of a 33-year-old gentleman who presented with hematuria and diagnosed to have a composite adenocarcinoma and small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma arising from the urachus. The patient also had widespread metastasis at the time of presentation, therefore, he was referred for chemotherapy. However, the disease showed progression despite treatment. Recognition of neuroendocrine carcinoma component in urachal tumors, although rare, is very essential as this histologic type carries poor prognosis with aggressive

Identification of Rare EIF3E::RSPO2 Fusion in Recurrent and Aggressive Urachal Adenocarcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Urachal cancer (UC) is a rare genitourinary malignancy arising from the urachus, an embryonic remnant of the placental allantois. Its diagnosis remains ambiguous with late-stage cancer detection and represents a highly aggressive disease. Due to its rarity, there is no clear consensus on molecular signatures and appropriate clinical management of UC. CASE REPORT: We report a 45-year-old man with recurrent urachal adenocarcinoma (UA) treated with cystectomies, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. The patient initially presented with hematuria and abdominal pain. Imaging revealed a nod

[Uroperitoneum in a heifer].

Uroperitoneum is a rarely documented finding in heifers. More frequently uroperitoneum is described in male youngstock suffering from obstructive urolithiasis, or abscesses of the urachus. This report describes a case of uroperitoneum most likely as a result of a traumatic rupture of the urinary bladder in an 8.5 months old heifer. The animal was presented with a severely dilated abdomen and an undulating wave was evident upon palpation. The heifer exhibited physiologic urination. Additionally, left displacement of the abomasum was evident. In consequence to findings of the ultrasonographic ex

Ultrasound findings in 34 newborn foals with uroperitoneum.

BACKGROUND: Uroperitoneum is a typical disease of the newborn foal, which occurs rarely but regularly. Ultrasonography is considered the most important imaging method for diagnosing this disease. Thus far, only one older case series comprising 31 foals suffering from uroperitoneum has systematically listed results of ultrasound examinations. OBJECTIVE: This paper presents the findings of an ultrasonographic examination of 34 foals with uroperitoneum in order to inform future interpretation of ultrasonographic data in suspected uroperitoneum cases. METHOD: Ultrasonographic data of 34 neonatal

Efficacy of Keratin AE1/AE3 Staining in Evaluating Resection Margins of a Urachal Remnant and Improving Surgical Precision and Outcomes: A Case Report.

A urachal remnant is a rare condition characterized by the persistence of the urachus beyond birth, often presenting with symptoms such as umbilical effusion, periomphalitis, and abdominal pain. Surgical resection is the cornerstone of treatment, but ensuring complete removal of urachal epithelium at the resection margin remains a challenge. This case report focuses on evaluating resection margins of urachal remnants and reports the case of a 25-year-old woman with complaints of umbilical effusion and a mass. She was diagnosed with a urachal remnant and underwent urachal resection and reconstr
