Tissue Engineering and Cell Technologies in the Treatment of Urethral Strictures.

In recent years, reconstructive surgery strategies have been supplemented with innovative approaches aimed at developing tissue-engineered structures using autologous tissues and biodegradable scaffolds and matrices, the purpose of which is to reduce the risk of postoperative complications, on the one hand, while ensuring accelerated restoration of the structure and functions of organs, on the other hand. The review systematizes modern scientific trends in the field of tissue engineering of the urethra, focused on creation of biocompatible and functionally active tissue-engineered structures u

Metformin enhances external urethral sphincter integrity and restores continence via AMPK activation in a rat model of stress urinary incontinence.

BACKGROUND: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is primarily caused by structural and functional damage to the external urethral sphincter (EUS). In previous studies, metformin, a known AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activator, has shown repair effects after skeletal muscle injury. This study explored its therapeutic effect and molecular mechanisms in SUI associated with EUS injury. METHODS: The SUI model was established by double vaginal dilation. Rats were assigned to sham, vehicle-treated, or metformin-treated (200 mg/kg/day, oral) groups. Urodynamic testing was performed after 7 and 14

Unveiling urethral cellular heterogeneity in menopause through single-nucleus RNA sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Estrogen homeostasis is crucial for the structure and function of the urethra, and estrogen deprivation resulting from menopause, ovariectomy, or ovarian dysfunction may lead to various urethral dysfunctions. However, the specific molecular mechanisms involved are still not fully understood. METHODS: Urethras from three ovariectomized (OVX) rats and three Sham rats were collected for snRNA-seq analysis. Data analysis included unsupervised clustering using the UMAP algorithm to identify distinct cell types based on marker gene expression. Differential gene expression analysis was p

Impact of intra- and interfractional motion on the dose distribution and urinary adverse events for magnetic resonance-guided prostate cancer radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of intra- and interfractional motion on dose distribution and clinical outcome in prostate magnetic resonance (MR)-guided adaptive radiotherapy. METHODS: Seventy-six patients were treated with five-fraction stereotactic radiotherapy on a 1.5 T MR linear accelerator. Cine MR images were acquired during treatment and exported to a motion monitoring research package, to generate motion traces in the anterior-posterior (AP), superior-inferior (SI) and left-right (LR) directions. Planned dose distributions were shifted according to motion trace to reconstruct intraf

ACR Appropriateness Criteria® Penetrating Trauma-Abdomen and Pelvis: Update 2026.

Penetrating urinary tract trauma requires timely imaging to correctly identify the location and extent of injury and guide management. In patients with suspected penetrating upper tract trauma, CT of the abdomen and pelvis with intravenous contrast and CT urography without and with contrast are usually appropriate for initial imaging, with CT urography providing superior evaluation of the collecting system and ureters. CT protocols without dedicated urographic phases may be appropriate in selected circumstances but provide limited assessment and should not replace CT urography when urinary tra

Peripheral serotonin contributes to testosterone and estradiol induced urinary voiding dysfunction in adult male mice.

OBJECTIVE: Millions of aging men are diagnosed with lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) each year. Alpha adrenergic receptor blockers relax prostatic, urethral, and bladder smooth muscle to relieve LUTD symptoms and are often, but not always, effective. Serotonin is proposed to cause contractions in the female urethra, as well as in the lungs and bowel. This study tests that serotonin synthesized in the periphery, outside of the central nervous system, contributes to the development of LUTD induced in mice by subcutaneous implants of testosterone (T) and estradiol (E2), mimicking the hormon

Biomechanic characterization of normal urethra using uro-dynamic MRI during voiding.

INTRODUCTION: Dynamic volumetric MRI was used to non-invasively assess urethral biomechanics in a single healthy male subject during voiding. METHODS: Volumetric lower urinary tract (LUT) images were obtained throughout the voiding effort using the uro-dynamic MRI methodology. These were subsequently segmented using MIMICS. Segmented urethral volumes were divided into prostatic, membranous, penile and bulbous urethra and were used to quantify urethral diameters over time, length and different phases of flow. Idealized instantaneous resistances were calculated for the posterior (prostatic and

Case Report: Successful management of bilateral ureteral obstruction following repair of iatrogenic urethral ligation and transection during a canine cryptorchidectomy.

An 8-month-old male English Bulldog was presented to an academic referral center following iatrogenic urethral transection during an elective unilateral cryptorchidectomy. A contrast cystourethrogram demonstrated contrast leakage from the pre-prostatic urethra. An exploratory laparotomy confirmed ligation and transection of the pre-prostatic urethra, and a urethral anastomosis was performed. Postoperatively, the patient developed progressive azotemia, and abdominal imaging revealed bilateral hydroureter and hydronephrosis consistent with bilateral ureteral obstruction. No apparent cause of mec

Nurse-led postoperative telemonitoring program following outpatient urethroplasty: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Urethral stricture disease remains a challenging condition with significant morbidity and quality-of-life impairment. Urethroplasty represents the gold-standard treatment, yet postoperative follow-up is demanding, requiring multiple in-person visits at referral centers, often far from patients’ homes. To optimize postoperative care, we developed a structured nurse-led postoperative telemonitoring program (TMP) designed to replace in-person follow-up visits. This study aimed to describe the TMP development and to assess feasibility, safety, and patient acceptability. MATERIALS AND

A Quality Improvement Initiative to Alleviate Pain in Flexible Cystoscopy and Minimize False Passages in Catheterization.

INTRODUCTION: Flexible cystoscopy is a common diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the urethra, bladder, and prostate by inserting a camera-equipped flexible tube through the urethra. Similarly, urinary catheterization involves the passage of a tube into the bladder for drainage or treatment. Both procedures are known to cause discomfort due to urethral sensitivity and share similar pre-procedural preparation steps. This quality improvement project (QIP) aimed to reduce patient discomfort during flexible cystoscopy by improving urethral preparation techniques, with potential applicability to

Preliminary Investigation of a Transcutaneous Ultrasound-Guided Technique for Pudendal Nerve Block in Six Horse Cadavers.

Regional anaesthesia of the equine anogenital tract is limited to local infiltration, extradural, blind palpation and nerve stimulator-guided techniques which risk iatrogenic damage, recumbency and ataxia. This study aimed to describe and assess the feasibility of transcutaneous ultrasound-guided (USG) pudendal nerve staining in equine cadavers. An initial pilot phase used two fresh equine cadavers and one standing unsedated horse to image the intrapelvic anatomy using ultrasound. One fixed equine cadaver specimen was also dissected to identify the pudendal nerve and refine the dissection appr

Urethral and pelvic risk factors for postpartum stress urinary incontinence using 3D high frequency endovaginal ultrasound.

INTRODUCTION: Physiological changes associated with pregnancy and childbirth can affect the pelvic floor, increasing the risk of postpartum stress urinary incontinence (SUI). This study aimed to assess whether ultrasonographic risk factors for SUI identified during pregnancy are also associated with SUI in the postpartum period, as evaluated by three-dimensional high-frequency endovaginal ultrasound (3D EVUS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty nulliparous pregnant women were enrolled in this prospective observational study, including 25 women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) during pregnancy

[A Case of Urethral Calculi Treated by Transurethral Surgery Due to Mesh Exposure in the Urethra Following a Tension-Free Vaginal Tape Procedure].

A 66-year-old female patient visited another hospital complaining of frequent urination. Computed tomography scan revealed a 3 cm urethral stone, and she was referred to our hospital for surgery. The patient had a history of tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) surgery for stress urinary incontinence approximately 15 years ago. When transurethral lithotripsy was initiated, the lower end of the stone was found near the external urethral meatus, and an attempt to push it into the bladder was unsuccessful. When fragmentation of the stone was performed using a Ho-YAG laser, exposure of the mesh, presum

Integrated optimization of needle paths and dwell time for individualized template-guided interstitial brachytherapy.

BACKGROUND: 3D-printed individualized template (3D-PIT) guided interstitial brachytherapy (ISBT) is an effective treatment modality for cervical cancer. However, the current practice of pre-operative planning requires manual needle paths design, which is highly dependent on operator experience and may lead to unnecessary insertion trauma. PURPOSE: To address this issue, this study introduces and validates an automated integrated optimization method for needle paths and dwell times for an institutional protocol of 3D-PIT based ISBT for locally recurrent cervical cancer. METHODS AND MATERIALS:

Surgical management of ovarian endometrioma in a patient with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an ultra-rare (prevalence ~ 1:2 million), devastating genetic disorder characterized by progressive heterotopic ossification. Crucially, surgical trauma is a potent trigger for catastrophic new bone formation, rendering any procedure exceptionally high-risk and generally contraindicated. The co-occurrence of FOP with a symptomatic ovarian endometrioma necessitating surgery represents an extraordinary clinical rarity. Critically, there exists a profound absence of published guidance on performing non-emergent, complex pelvic surgery lik
