Congenital urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence: observational clinical findings and treatment outcomes-a small retrospective study in 19 bitches.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to report observational clinical findings and treatment outcomes in a population of bitches affected with congenital urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence (CUSMI). Response rate to sympaticomimetic drugs has not yet been reported in the literature in dogs affected with CUSMI. Juvenile bitches showing clinical signs of urinary incontinence were included. A diagnosis of CUSMI was made based on history, clinical signs, confirmation of orthotopic ureters and urethral pressure profilometry. At first consultation, all bitches (neutered or not) received phenylpropanol

Feasibility and safety of double-J ureteral stent with a timed-release extraction string in children.

INTRODUCTION: Conventional removal of double-J ureteral stent (DJUS) in children typically requires cystoscopy under general anesthesia, which entails perioperative risks and increased healthcare costs. The DJUS with a timed-release extraction string (DJUS-TRES) potentially overcomes these limitations. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility and safety of DJUS-TRES in children. STUDY DESIGN: We prospectively collected data on children undergoing urological surgeries with DJUS-TRES between September 2022 and May 2025, with subsequent retrospective analysis. Postoperatively, the absorbable sutu

Is dorsal inlay graft (DIG) with TIP repair superior to TIP alone for primary hypospadias? A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Tubularized incised plate urethroplasty (TIP) is a widely practiced technique for hypospadias repair; however, it remains associated with complications, particularly meatal and/or neourethral stenosis. Grafting the incised plate with a dorsal inlay graft (DIG) during TIP has been proposed as a preferred modification to address these complications. Although several studies have investigated DIG in cases with a narrow urethral plate (UP), no current consensus exists regarding its use as an adjunct to TIP repair in different types of UP. OBJECTIVES: The current study aimed to investi

Old discussion, the same challenge: revisiting radiological predictors for urethroplasty complexity in male pelvic-fracture urethral injuries.

PURPOSE: Several radiological predictors of pelvic fracture urethral injuries (PFUI) repair complexity have been proposed, but they have not been compared in external cohorts or tested against each other. This study evaluates the reliability and accuracy of indicators from Koraitim et al. and Yepes et al. in predicting surgical complexity in adult men with PFUI. METHODS: Retrospective review of adult men who underwent PFUI repair between January 2011 and February 2024 in our center. Preoperative urethrocystographies (UCG) were analyzed for urethral gap length and gapometry index (Koraitim), a

Hedgehog pathway disruption alters urothelial differentiation and continence mechanisms in the female mouse lower urinary tract.

Urinary incontinence (UI) imposes a significant healthcare burden and reduces quality of life. Contributing factors such as aging, pregnancy/childbirth, stress, and injury are recognized, but incomplete understanding of underlying mechanisms limits new therapies. Hedgehog (Hh) signaling has been implicated in lower urinary tract development, but its specific role in female continence mechanisms has not been fully characterized. Here we investigate the functional and molecular consequences of reduced Hh signaling using Gli2+/-;Gli3Δ699/+ (Gli mutant) female mice. We assessed spontaneous voiding

Low-Power Holmium Laser Therapy for Urethral Strictures at Ninh Thuan Province General Hospital, Vietnam.

INTRODUCTION: Urethral stricture is a common urological disease characterized by a narrowing of the urethra leading to functional changes that reduce or completely block urine flow from the kidney to the bladder. This condition significantly affects the patient's quality of life and can lead to serious complications, such as urethral dilatation and hydronephrosis, which may result in irreversible kidney failure if left untreated. METHODS: This was an observational cross-sectional study conducted on 35 patients, treated for urethral stricture at the Department of Uro-nephrology Surgery, Ninh T

Myricetin-3-O-galactoside in cranberries alleviates urinary tract infections in mice by inhibiting the adhesion of uropathogenic Escherichia coli CFT073.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most prevalent urological diseases worldwide, characterized by high morbidity and recurrence rates. Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is the predominant etiological agent of UTIs. It adheres to epithelial cells in the urethra or bladder via adhesins, followed by local colonization, proliferation, and induction of uroepithelial tissue damage and inflammation. However, the widespread use of antibiotics has led to increasing resistance in UPEC, posing significant challenges to the treatment of UTIs. In the present study, we successfully isolated a

Case Report: Radical urethrectomy with partial cystectomy and bladder outlet reconstruction in giant female urethral adenocarcinoma infiltrating the bladder: A rare case report.

INTRODUCTION: Female urethral adenocarcinoma (FUA) is an exceptionally rare and aggressive malignancy, accounting for less than 0.02% of all cancers in women. Its nonspecific symptoms often lead to delayed diagnosis, with many cases detected at advanced stages. The rarity of FUA, particularly when presenting with a large mass, underscores the challenges in developing standardized treatment protocols. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old woman presented with urinary retention. Clinical examination revealed a large mass obstructing the urethral orifice. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed a mali

Membranous urethral length as a predictor for urinary incontinence after holmium enucleation of the prostate for benign prostatic hyperplasia.

PURPOSE: Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) is as an effective, size-independent treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with durable outcomes. However, one of its adverse outcomes is post-operative stress urinary incontinence (SUI). We sought to determine if membranous urethral length (MUL) as measured on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging is a predictor for post-operative SUI in patients undergoing HoLEP for BPH. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective observational study was conducted on 147 consecutive patients who underwent HoLEP for BPH between 2018 and 2024

Off-label use of drug-coated balloon (Optilume™) for urethral stricture in a 16-year-old boy: the FIRST pediatric case report.

Urethral strictures that are not related to urological procedures or severe urethral trauma are rare in the pediatric population. Potential etiological factors include bladder catheterization during advanced surgical procedures and in intensive care units. We present the first reported off-label, minimally invasive treatment of a long-segment anterior urethral stricture in a teenager following cardiac surgery, using a paclitaxel-coated balloon (Optilume™). During the diagnosis of urethral stricture, cystoscopy and urethral biopsy were performed, which ruled out balanitis xerotica obliterans on
