A Review of Medical and Legal Characteristics for Urethroplasty-Related Litigation and Medical Malpractice Cases.

This study aimed to characterize litigation involving urethroplasties to identify common medical and legal trends. We queried the Westlaw and Bloomberg Law databases using the term "urethroplasty." Cases from January 1979 to June 2023 were reviewed. We included both medical malpractice and nonmalpractice lawsuits. We excluded cases that did not mention the urologist, preoperative care, postoperative care, or complications. Cases were categorized based on the reason for litigation and the related complications, involved parties, and if they resulted in settlement. We identified 17 cases that me

Assessment of predictive value of pre- and postoperative urethral pressure profiles for long-term continence in female dogs with ectopic ureters: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Ectopic ureters (EU) are the main cause of urinary incontinence in juvenile dogs with a continence rate ranging from 22 to 72% reported after surgical correction. The objective of this retrospective preliminary study was to evaluate the usefulness of pre- and postoperative urethral pressure profiles (UPP) in predicting long-term continence in dogs with EU. RESULTS: UPP were performed in 16 female dogs prior to surgical correction of EU, as well as postoperatively, between 2012 and 2022. Urodynamic parameters included maximal urethral pressure (MUP), maximal urethral closure pressu

A rare complication following excision and primary anastomosis urethroplasty: Osteomyelitis: a case report.

RATIONALE: Urethral stricture is the scarring and healing of the urethral epithelium or the corpus spongiosum layer just beneath it, following damage to the urethra for any reason. The curative and the gold-standard treatment is urethroplasty. The management of posterior urethral strictures is 1 of the most difficult problems for urologists and requires special attention and reconstructive experience. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 79-year-old male who developed osteomyelitis following posterior urethroplasty. DIAGNOSES: Osteomyelitis was diagnosed after magnetic resonance imaging and bone biopsy. Hist

Hybrid one-stage Snodgrass-Duckett urethroplasty for severe hypospadias. A five-year institutional experience.

Proximal and complex hypospadias repairs remain among the most technically demanding procedures in pediatric urology, particularly in patients with inadequate local tissue or previous failed reconstructions. This study reports a five-year institutional experience with a single-stage hybrid technique combining the Snodgrass Tubularized Incised Plate (TIP) repair and the Duckett transverse preputial island flap urethroplasty. Between 2019 and 2024, forty-two patients with severe hypospadias underwent hybrid Snodgrass- Duckett urethroplasty at our institution. Patients were categorized as: Group

A nation-wide multi-institutional evaluation of oral versus colonic mucosal grafts for the treatment of complex long-segment urethral strictures: comparative long-term outcomes and analysis of complications from China.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of long-term outcomes and compare the differences between oral mucosal grafts (OMGs) and colonic mucosal grafts (CMGs) in the treatment of complex long-segment urethral stenosis. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with long-segment urethral strictures (> 10 cm) who underwent one-stage urethroplasty using either CMGs or OMGs at multiple institutions between 2000 and 2020 in China. Urethral reconstruction with CMGs was performed in 69 patients, while OMG-based urethroplasty was conducted in 225 patients. The primary measure of success wa

Robotic Transurethral Vesicourethral Anastomosis after Radical Prostatectomy in Validated Models.

PURPOSE: Techniques that minimize dissection of neurovascular structures and the pelvic floor during radical prostatectomy improve perioperative outcomes and functional recovery. Previous groups have tried to reduce dissection by performing a transurethral prostatectomy. However, the vesicourethral anastomosis could not be reliably performed because of the limited instrumentation. We sought to address this with a concentric tube robot (CTR) system designed specifically for performing a transurethral vesicourethral anastomosis after transurethral prostatectomy, in a series of validated phantoms

Dosimetric study of dose de-escalation using MRI-guidance for Pd-103 low-dose-rate brachytherapy in prostate cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the prevalence of prostate malignancies, there remains a need to improve toxicity profiles while maintaining oncologic control. Standard whole-gland treatment prescriptions have been associated with rectal, bladder, and urethral toxicity. This dosimetric study evaluated a differential dosing approach using Pd-103 low-dose-rate brachytherapy that delivers full prescription dose (125 Gy) to MRI-visible lesions while reducing dose to uninvolved prostate tissue (100 Gy). METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with unifocal, MRI-visible, biopsy-proven low- or intermediate-risk prostate

Automated Ultrasound-Based Analysis of Urethral Kinematics in Stress Urinary Incontinence: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVES: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) has been linked to excessive urethral mobility, yet clinical evaluation has been largely limited to assessing maximal excursion rather than capturing the full dynamics of visible urethral movement. In this study, we hypothesize that an automated, ultrasound-based method can objectively differentiate urethral mobility patterns between women with SUI and continent controls. METHODS: We used a previously validated optical flow-based algorithm to automatically track urethral motion from transperineal ultrasound images during cough, Valsalva maneuver,

Congenital hypospadias complicated with pelvic cystic lesions and accessory urethra:A case report.

This study reports a sporadic case of a 44-year-old male with congenital hypospadias complicated by a seminal vesicle cyst and accessory urethra. The patient presented with recurrent dysuria, and after undergoing laparoscopic seminal vesiculectomy combined with targeted anti-infective therapy, his symptoms were significantly relieved with favorable recovery. This case suggests that comprehensive imaging evaluation, individualized surgical planning, and long-term standardized follow-up are of great value in the diagnosis and treatment of such complex urinary system malformations.

Utility of blue-light cystoscopy and tumor-informed ctDNA for management of recurrent high-risk NMIBC with prostatic urethral involvement: A case report.

Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) with prostatic urethral involvement (PUI) is rare and difficult to manage, especially after intravesical therapy or pelvic radiation. We report a 78-year-old man with recurrent high-risk NMIBC and PUI after bacillus Calmette-Guérin and mitomycin C. Blue-light cystoscopy (BLC) during restaging identified additional carcinoma in situ and high-grade T1 disease not seen with white light. Histopathology showed no stromal invasion, and tumor-informed circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) testing was negative, indicating no molecular residual disease. Despite favora

Multimodal Imaging Findings in Penile Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Penile squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common type of penile malignancy affecting males in their sixth to eighth decade of life. We discuss a case of an 89-year-old male with dementia who initially presented to the emergency department with a penile lesion and symptoms consistent with a urinary tract infection. Further evaluation with MRI and a subsequent biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of penile SCC, which caused multiple strictures in the penile urethra. This report demonstrates a rare instance of penile SCC causing multifocal urethral obstructions and highlights the utility of MRI

Treatment Trends for Anterior Urethral Stricture: An International Survey on Eligibility for Staged Urethroplasty.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Anterior urethral strictures impact quality of life and often require surgical intervention. Urethroplasty is the definitive treatment, but consensus on the best approach or timing, particularly for staged procedures, is lacking. The aim of our study was to identify factors influencing the decision to perform staged versus one-stage urethroplasty and determine key factors for the timing of the second stage. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey to identify factors influencing surgical decision-making for urethral stricture treatment in adult patients. A surv

Patient-reported outcomes after single-stage spiral preputial graft urethroplasty for panurethral strictures: a single-centre prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Panurethral strictures, involving the entire anterior urethra, present a significant reconstructive challenge. While buccal mucosal grafts are commonly used, limitations in graft length and donor site morbidity persist. The spiral preputial graft (SPG) offers a promising alternative, enabling long, hairless grafts without additional donor morbidity. This study prospectively evaluates patient-reported outcomes (PROs) following single-stage SPG urethroplasty for panurethral strictures. METHODS: A prospective interventional study was conducted between January 2021 and June 2024 at a t

The bull reproductive microbiome: a comparative analysis of microbial communities within semen and organs of the bull reproductive system†.

Semen from mature, healthy bulls contains commensal microbes. Potential internal sources of seminal microbes have not been extensively evaluated. Objectives were to (1) assess whether the testes of the bull contain commensal microbes and to compare the composition of the putative testicular microbiome to that of semen and rumen fluid and (2) determine whether other organs of the bull reproductive system contain microbial populations. Here, we demonstrate that the testes of the bull contain a low biomass, yet diverse, microbiome. Interestingly, the microbial composition of rumen fluid, semen an

Biomimetic Urethra-on-a-Chip Platform for Modelling Fibrosis: 3D-Printing and Near-Field Electrospinning in BAM-Functionalized Microenvironment.

Urethral stricture, a prevalent urological disorder characterized by fibrosis of periurethral tissues, severely compromises urinary function and patient quality of life. Despite various clinical interventions, recurrence remains frequent, largely due to the lack of physiologically relevant in vitro models for mechanistic investigation and drug screening. Here, we present a biomimetic urethra-on-a-chip platform that integrates microfluidics, three-dimensional (3D) printing, and near-field electrospinning to recapitulate the structural and biochemical complexity of the native urethra. The device
