Neural Organization of Episodic Memory and Navigation in Children and Adults.

Episodic memory and spatial navigation are often viewed as interlinked, in part due to their shared reliance on medial-temporal lobe (MTL) structures. At the same time, there are important differences, for example, natural spatial navigation requires moving one's body through space while episodic memory does not. We investigated whether naturalistically encoded memories that were either episodic or additionally embedded in a navigational experience relied on overlapping or distinct neural networks. Children ages 8-13 years old and young adults viewed pictures of objects that they had previousl

AA in Brain-Memory, Dementia, Depression, Anxiety, Alzheimer's Disease, Affective and Psychiatric Disorders, and Coronary Heart Disease (CHD).

The human brain is rich in AA and DHA, which are crucial for normal brain growth and development and memory. They form a major structural component of neurons of the cerebral cortex and photoreceptor cells in the retina. AA and DHA support synaptic plasticity and contribute to efficient neurotransmission. Adequate amounts of AA and DHA support neuronal growth and the formation of new synapses and thus are crucial for memory and cognitive function.Depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and other neurological diseases occur more frequently in those with coronary heart disease (CHD) and vice versa.

Preparation of Postmortem Human Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded Frontal Cortex Tissue for Profiling Pyramidal Neurons Via Digital Spatial Profiling.

Digital spatial profiling (DSP) facilitates RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) of small populations of cells, specifically ~20 pyramidal neurons in postmortem formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) human brain tissue. This approach enables precise expression profiling via RNA-seq data linked to spatially characterized samples utilizing tissue-bound probes. We present a comprehensive protocol for manual slide preparation using the GeoMx DSP system as preliminary steps to spatial characterization of lamina-specific pyramidal neurons in human postmortem Brodmann area 9 (BA9) frontal cortex brain tissue.

Postoperative demarcation lines in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment: what en-face imaging reveals about visual outcomes.

PURPOSE: To investigate postoperative demarcation lines using en-face optical coherence tomography (OCT) after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) and assess association with visual outcomes. METHODS: Consecutive patients undergoing PPV for primary RRD with gas tamponade were prospectively enrolled. Postoperative demarcation lines on en-face OCT were defined as hyper-reflective lines following contour of previous detachment edge. Postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and metamorphopsia were analyzed in relation to location of demarcation

Visual Perspective Shapes Subjective Experience: Dissociable Parietal Contributions to the Constructive Nature of Memory.

Subjective features of memory are often treated as secondary to the objective content of remembered events. However, growing evidence suggests that these features actively shape how memories are constructed, experienced, and used. Rather than treating visual perspective as a peripheral correlate of subjectivity, this review positions it as a key mechanism that shapes the memory. Because perspective can be flexibly controlled and reliably measured, it offers a unique window into how retrieval goals interact with mental simulation to produce vivid and emotionally resonant recollections. Neuroprotective and memory-enhancing effects of Aloysia gratissima extract and rutin in an MPTP-induced model of Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder worldwide and currently has no cure. Available treatments mainly alleviate symptoms but show limited long-term efficacy, underscoring the need for new therapeutic strategies. This work aimed to investigate the neuroprotective potential of Aloysia gratissima leaf extract and the flavonoid rutin on memory deficits, inflammatory markers, and neurotransmitter bioavailability in an MPTP-induced model of PD in rats. At 12-13 weeks of age Wistar rats were intranasally administered 1 mg of MPTP to induce PD-like symptoms.

Longitudinal MRI studies of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: A systematic review.

We reviewed longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies exploring the brain development of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Specifically, we conducted a systematic review of papers published until 9 September 2025 in English on pediatric patients with ADHD. After screening 3385 studies, 32 were selected for review. The age range at baseline for the participants in the review ranged from 4 to 18 years old. Children with ADHD exhibited delays in brain volume and cortical thickness compared to typically developing (TD) children, particularly at baseline, wi

Fractal dynamics in spontaneous motor activity associate with effective antidepressant chronotherapeutic response, cerebellar volumes, and white matter microstructure in bipolar disorder.

AIM: Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by circadian dysregulation, altered sleep-wake behaviors, and heterogeneous antidepressant response. Chronotherapeutic interventions such as total sleep deprivation combined with light therapy (TSD + LT) produce rapid antidepressant effects, but predictors of outcome are lacking. We investigated whether fractal dynamics of motor activity, indexed by the short-term scaling exponent α₁, are associated with antidepressant response, sleep-wake regulation, and structural brain measures and may serve as a biomarker of treatment responsiveness. METHODS: Si

Precuneus and Superior Parietal Lobule: Morphology and Evolution in the Human Genus.

BACKGROUND: Humans display larger and more complex parietal lobes, when compared with other primates. The superior parietal lobule is a region still poorly known in terms of comparative and evolutionary neuroanatomy, although at least its medial region, the precuneus, is apparently expanded in our species. SUMMARY: In this article, I review 20 years of personal research on the morphology and evolution of this cortical element. The precuneus is particularly variable among adult humans, mostly in its dorsal and anterior areas. This large individual variability seems already settled at birth. Du

Control of representation updating by higher-order thalamus enables history-based decision-making.

When sensory information is ambiguous, we must interpret current inputs based on a representation constructed from our previous experiences. Although appropriately updating this internal representation to track environmental changes is essential for behavior, the neural basis of this dynamic integration remains unknown. Using a combination of multi-area single-unit recordings and optogenetic techniques in mice under both behavioral and passive conditions, we find that interactions between the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and its higher-order thalamic counterpart, the pulvinar (PUL), are nec

The role of the angular gyrus in memory for encoded perspective and subjective re-experiencing.

Remembering personal events typically involves reconstructing our original first-person perspective, often accompanied by a vivid sense of re-experiencing the past. The Angular Gyrus (AnG) has been implicated in both perspective reconstruction and subjective memory experience, yet its specific contribution remains unclear. We investigated the role of the AnG across three studies using a behavioural paradigm in which healthy adults (aged 18-35) encoded a naturalistic video. At retrieval, participants judged whether test images matched their original perspective and rated subjective aspects of t

Affective and neural modulation of smart device-related stimuli following a single session of evaluative conditioning.

BACKGROUND: Evaluative conditioning (EC) has shown potential to reduce maladaptive affective biases underlying problematic health-related behaviors. However, there is limited evidence applying EC to smart device-related stimuli. We examined whether EC training can modify affective and neural responses to these stimuli in a proof-of-concept study conducted in a non-clinical sample. METHODS: Healthy young participants underwent a single session of either negative or benign EC, during which smart device images served as conditioned stimuli (CSs) and were paired with negative or positive words as

Transformer Mechanisms Mimic Frontostriatal Gating Operations When Trained on Human Working Memory Tasks.

Working memory (WM) is thought to rely on sophisticated frontostriatal mechanisms for selective gating, supporting updating and readout of information to and from distinct memory "addresses" (neural populations). According to computational models, capacity limitations in WM arise due to challenges in "role addressability": learning to correctly bind items in memory to their respective roles and assigning credit to the corresponding gating operations. However, these conclusions are based on particular assumptions about biological neural networks, and it is unclear whether the principles general

Resting-state functional connectivity in default mode and frontoparietal networks predicts directed forgetting.

Directed forgetting (DF) refers to the goal-directed modulation of memory, typically manifested as superior memory for information cued to be remembered (TBR) compared to information cued to be forgotten (TBF). Although prior studies have emphasized task-evoked neural mechanisms of DF, it remains unclear whether intrinsic brain network organization contributes to individual differences in memory control. The present study examined whether resting-state functional connectivity within and between the default mode network (DMN) and frontoparietal network (FPN) predicts individual differences in D

Fingerprint-Mimetic Fibrous Glove via Shear-Induced Alignment and Dynamic Compensation for Multimodal Tactile Sensing.

Flexible devices are key for human-machine interaction in smart homes and virtual reality. However, existing wearable devices are limited by single-mode sensing, irreversible conductive network damage under deformation, and a lack of tactile enhancement, hindering high sensitivity and multimodal perception. Herein, inspired by the arc-shaped topology of human fingerprints, we propose a fiber-based multimodal tactile smart glove (silver/ionic liquid/TPU glove, named SIT Glove). Using Jeffery orbit dynamics, shear flow during wet-spinning aligned silver nanoflakes (AgNFs) axially, while an ionic
