Magnetoelectric Multiferroics for the Next-Generation Ultralow-Power Electronics.

Magnetoelectric multiferroics enable voltage control of magnetic states for low-energy, non-volatile memory and logic. Their practical value, however, depends on the complete device pathway, not coupling strength alone. This Review evaluates materials, switching mechanisms, and devices against these requirements, distinguishing measured performance from projected targets. We compare three magnetoelectric random-access memory (MeRAM) routes with ferroelectric RAM and spin-transfer torque magnetic RAM, and assess magnetoelectric spin-orbit (MESO) logic alongside complementary metal-oxide-semicon

Bi12Rh3Ag6I9: Mobile Silver Ions and Surface-Dominated Transport in a Layered Weak Topological Insulator.

Bi12Rh3Ag6I9 extends the Bi14Rh3I9 family of layered bismuth-rich iodides in which intermetallic topological-insulator sheets alternate with salt-like spacer layers. High-temperature synthesis yields phase-pure powders and millimeter-sized platelets. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals a rhombohedral structure composed of [Bi12Rh3I]2+ layers and [Ag6I8]2- spacers. In this spacer, Ag+ cations occupy 75% of the tetrahedral voids of a double iodide layer, giving rise to intrinsic two-dimensional cation disorder and mobility. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveals a room-temperature i

Spin-Vibronic Mechanism of Light-Driven Coordination-Induced Spin-State Switching in a Nickel(II) Complex.

In Ni(II) complexes, spin-state switching is governed by changes in the coordination number and the nature of the ligand field. We report the ultrafast photorelaxation of an axial-pyridine-coordinated octahedral Ni(II) complex with a phenazine fluorophore using multi-configurational electronic structure calculations and quantum wavepacket dynamics. Potential energy surfaces for 20 states of high-spin and low-spin metal-centered (MC), ligand-centered, and charge-transfer (CT) characters were computed using the CAS(12,9)/NEVPT2 method and incorporated into a spin-vibronic Hamiltonian that was pr

Photoinduced C-Br bond cleavage enables difluoroketene-mediated ground-state [2 + 2] cycloaddition: a TD-DFT study.

This work presents a TD-DFT computational study of the visible-light-driven [2 + 2] cycloaddition between alkynes and bromodifluoroacetylsilanes, leading to gem-difluorocyclobutenones. Visible-light irradiation of bromodifluoroacetylsilanes was recently shown by Zhou et al. to generate difluoroketene in situ for [2 + 2] cycloaddition with alkynes; the electronic origin of this photoactivation, however, had not been established. The results show that irradiation at 450 nm is vertically resonant only with the T1 triplet state of the brominated precursor, consistent with heavy-atom-enhanced spin-

Regioisomeric engineering of carbazole-naphthalimide donor-acceptor systems enables efficient triplet generation and room temperature phosphorescence in molecular and nanoaggregated states.

Regioisomeric engineering provides an effective strategy for controlling excited-state dynamics in donor-acceptor systems, yet its influence on triplet generation and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) remains insufficiently understood. Herein, we report two series of carbazole-phenyl-naphthalimide donor-acceptor regioisomers in which carbazole is connected to either the C3 or C4 position of the naphthalimide acceptor through ortho-, meta-, and para-substituted phenyl linkers. Systematic photophysical investigations reveal that subtle changes in molecular connectivity profoundly influence

Defocus estimation for star sensors based on closed energy contours.

This paper presents a novel, to our knowledge, defocus estimation method for star sensors, leveraging the equivalent radius R80 of the 80%-energy closed contour in conjunction with pixel-phase compensation. In contrast to existing approaches, the proposed method operates on a single isolated-star-spot image and circumvents the need for complex parametric reconstruction of the point-spread function. The processing pipeline comprises background subtraction, noise suppression, centroid estimation, and pixel-phase compensation, followed by subpixel interpolation and threshold-based searching to ex

Dominance of shape anisotropy in a CrOCl monolayer enables deterministic strain switching of the magnetic easy axis.

A CrOCl monolayer is a two-dimensional ferromagnetic semiconductor successfully synthesized in recent years, but the origin and tunability of its magnetic anisotropy have not been systematically studied. Our calculations reveal a pronounced triaxial anisotropy in the CrOCl monolayer, establishing the y-axis as the easy axis, with the z- and x-axes serving as the intermediate and hard axes, respectively. Our core finding is that shape anisotropy arising from the long-range magnetic dipole-dipole interaction plays a dominant role in the total magnetic anisotropy energy, exceeding the contributio

Dimensional Engineering of Co/W Superlattices Enables Out-of-Plane Spin Polarization with 90% Field-Free Switching in Perpendicular CoFeB.

Deterministic spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching of perpendicular magnets without external magnetic fields remains a central challenge for scalable SOT-MRAM. Here, we demonstrate that dimensional engineering of a Co/W superlattice spin-orbit layer enables >90% field-free switching of perpendicular CoFeB. Harmonic Hall measurements reveal an unconventional out-of-plane torque, while first-principles calculations reveal reconstruction of the spin-resolved electronic structure and increased W-projected out-of-plane spin character, together supporting the modification of torque symmetry through Co/

Optically Active Single Hole Spin in ZnSe.

Semiconductor hole spins offer a pathway to extended coherence times by decoupling from nuclear magnetic noise, while their spin-orbit coupling enables fast all-electrical control. In ZnSe, however, realizing this potential has been limited by p-doping challenges. Here, we circumvent this limit by optically activating acceptors and demonstrate optical spin initialization. We isolate a single-hole spin bound to a shallow acceptor, confirmed by antibunching and accessed via the fast (244 ps) radiative recombination of a bound exciton. Magnetic and Raman spectroscopy reveal a spin-selective Λ sys

Transport evidence for the orbital Nernst effect.

Orbital Hall effects have recently attracted significant attention for generating substantial orbital angular momentum currents in both strong- and weak-spin-orbit-coupling materials. Despite extensive theoretical and experimental progress on the orbital Hall effect, its thermal counterpart, in which a temperature gradient drives a transverse orbital current, known as the orbital Nernst effect, has remained experimentally elusive. Here, we report the first experimental evidence for the orbital Nernst effect by measuring the magneto-thermopower in the yttrium iron garnet (YIG)/Pt/CuOx heterostr

Spin Hall effect in organic semiconductors.

The spin Hall effect (SHE) achieves the conversion between charge current and spin current mediated by spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which has drawn considerable interest in spintronics. Organic semiconductors have emerged as promising candidates in spintronics due to their merits of flexibility, low cost, and long spin-relaxation times. In spite of the challenge from weak SOC in organics, the adjustable SOC, strong electron-lattice interaction, and structural anisotropy bring opportunities and new physics for a sizable organic SHE. This review presents an overview of experimental and theoretical

Beyond |E|2: Tensorial Electrostatic Reorganization in Hydrated Eu3+-Nitrate Complexes and Its Implications for Hypersensitive Luminescence.

The microscopic origin of the hypersensitive luminescence of Eu3+ remains closely connected to how the local coordination environment perturbs the 4f electronic manifold. Here, we combine molecular dynamics, free-energy calculations, a multipolar analysis of the local electrostatic environment, and multireference electronic-structure calculations to examine hydrated Eu3+-nitrate complexes beyond a scalar static-field description. A 12-6-4 Eu3+ model combined with TIP4P-Ew water yields an approximately nine-coordinate hydration shell and predicts the local outer-sphere nitrate basin to be more

Ultrafast Core-Shell Spin Transfer and Spin-Selective Relaxation in an Endohedral Cage Cluster.

Ultrafast optical control of spin states offers a promising route to molecular-scale magnetic manipulation, yet the mechanisms of laser-driven spin dynamics in atomically precise clusters remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate the ultrafast spin dynamics of the endohedral Mn@Sn12 cluster using real-time time-dependent density functional theory simulations. Strong Mn 3d-Sn 5p orbital hybridization couples the localized Mn center to the Sn12 cage. Upon femtosecond laser excitation, the Mn@Sn12 cluster exhibits a pronounced transient magnetic response within several femtoseconds, accompan

NMR Spectroscopic Evidence for Magnetically Induced Ring Currents in All-Metal-Aromatic [Bi4]4.

Experimental assignment of aromaticity in all-metal systems remains challenging, particularly for heavy-element clusters, where local magnetic effects can obscure signatures of circular electron delocalization. Here, we investigate a supramolecularly stabilized, formally tetracationic [Bi4]4+ ring by combining structurally meaningful reference compounds, solid- and solution-state NMR spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and exact two-component relativistic calculations. Comparison with an isostructural [Li4Br]3+-encapsulated analogue and a binuclear Bi(III) reference compound disentangles global

Wavelength-Selective Magneto-Optical Diodes Based on Rare-Earth Chiral Molecular Crystals.

Chiral materials, integrating structural breaking of mirror-symmetry, exhibit physical properties that cannot be observed in centrosymmetric analogues. Among these properties, optical magneto-chiral anisotropy, the nonreciprocal absorption of light shown by chiral magnetized systems, is emerging as an enabling technology in magneto-optics and photonics. Here, we report on enantiopure chiral molecular crystals based on the erbium(III) rare-earth ion that display nonreciprocal, wavelength-selective, magnetic field-induced variations of the optical absorption coefficients up to ca. 200% for the i

Chemical Design Rule for Ultraviolet-Emitting Color Centers: The Role of Host Ionicity.

Solid-state ultraviolet (UV) single-photon emitters (SPEs) are highly desirable for solar-blind free-space quantum communication, ion-compatible quantum networking, and label-free spectroscopy, yet robust and well-understood UV color centers remain scarce even in wide-gap hosts such as diamond. Here we show that the energy of zero-phonon lines (ZPLs) is not controlled by the bandgap alone, but is governed by the host bonding character (covalent versus ionic) through the bonding-antibonding splitting of lattice divacancy-derived defect states. In covalent diamond, the divacancy yields only a 0.

Valley Zeeman Splitting-Enhanced Spin-Forbidden Dark Exciton Formation in Magnetically V-Doped WSe2 Monolayer and WSe2/MoSe2 Heterostructure.

Spin-forbidden dark excitons are promising for optoelectronic devices due to the significantly extended lifetimes. Although their formation mechanism in monolayer MoS2 has been theoretically revealed, time-reversal symmetry intrinsically protects valley degeneracy, imposing a fundamental limit on the formation efficiency. However, effective strategies to overcome this limitation remain unclear. Here, the photoexcitation and relaxation dynamics in the WSe2 monolayer and WSe2/MoSe2 heterostructure are investigated through nonadiabatic molecular dynamics combined with light-matter interaction and

Unveiling the Promoting Mechanism of Humic Acid in Photocatalysis via Bismuth Heavy-Atom Effect.

Humic acid (HA) can contribute to photochemical transformation of organic pollutants in natural waters via triplet-excited states (3HA*). However, in HA-containing water matrices for practical photocatalytic treatment (e.g., surface waters or wastewater effluents), HA is conventionally regarded as a persistent inhibitor; its rapid quenching of reactive species dominates the process, while the beneficial 3HA* pathway remains restricted by spin-forbidden singlet-to-triplet conversion. Herein, a heavy-atom-effect-driven molecular assembly with a bismuth catalyst was designed to overcome the spin-

Enhanced Current-Induced Spin Polarization in Ultrathin Chiral Nanowires.

Current-induced spin polarization (CISP) has recently emerged as an attractive route for generating spin-polarized current for spintronics, yet to achieve large and robust CISP remains challenging. Here, by combining first-principles and tight-binding analyses, we reveal that CISP in chiral tellurium (Te) could be significantly enhanced in the one-dimensional (1D) form of ultrathin nanowires. Compared to bulk Te, quantum confinement widens the band gap and amplifies the spin polarization as the diameter of the nanowire shrinks. Quantum transport simulations explicitly demonstrate that the CISP

Ab Initio Investigation of the Tin Kagome Sublattice and Phonon-Mediated Superconductivity in SrSn3.

Recent studies have shown that the intermetallic compound SrSn3 crystallizes in a layered structure in which Sn atoms form a Kagome framework. As a type-II superconductor with an experimental critical temperature of about 5.5 K, SrSn3 provides an opportunity to examine how the main-group Sn sublattice participates in conventional phonon-mediated superconductivity. Using density-functional theory, linear-response calculations, and electron-phonon coupling analysis, we investigate its structural, electronic, elastic, vibrational, and superconducting properties. The electronic states around the F
