[Diffuse choroidal hemangioma as a manifestation of Sturge-Weber syndrome (a clinical case study)].

Encephalotrigeminal angiomatosis (Sturge-Weber syndrome) is a congenital sporadic disease characterized by angiomatosis of meningeal vessels, facial and eye capillaries. The article presents a clinical case of comorbidity between monolateral skin angioma, ipsilateral conjunctival and choroidal angiomas without intraocular pressure elevation. The case is unusual due to asynchronous manifestation of the clinical signs of Sturge-Weber syndrome. Facial angioma was diagnosed at birth, while conjunctival angioma appeared at the age of 45 - at the same time as monolateral hypermetropia, which may be

Serous retinal detachment caused by choroidal metastatic SLL: A case report.

86-year-old man presented with reduced vision in his right eye corresponding to large serous detachment. Enhanced Depth Imaging Optical Coherence Tomography (EDI-OCT) showed diffusely thickened choroid. Concurrent diagnosis of small lymphocytic lymphoma diagnosed from submandibular node incited suspicion of choroidal metastasis. Successful response to chemotherapy clearly documented using EDI-OCT technology.

Central serous chorioretinopathy: risk factors for serous retinal detachment in fellow eyes.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To assess risk factors for serous retinal detachment (SRD) in the fellow eye of patients with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) based on clinical data and multimodal imaging findings, including baseline late-phase indocyanine green angiography (ICGA). METHODS: Consecutive patients with unilateral CSC were retrospectively assessed. Inclusion criteria were the availability of late-phase ICGA and a spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) macular cube for both eyes at baseline and over 3 months. Subsequent OCT of fellow eyes was reviewed to detect the development

Factors associated with macular complications in highly myopic eyes with dome-shaped macular configuration.

PURPOSE: To investigate the associations between macular complications and demographic, clinical, and optical coherence tomography characteristics (OCT) of highly myopic eyes with a dome-shaped macula (DSM). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the findings of 90 patients (167 eyes) with DSM who had vertical and horizontal OCT scans between January 2011 and June 2018. Demographic data, clinical characteristics, and OCT-derived morphologic parameters were determined, and the associations of these parameters with macular complications were evaluated. RESULTS: Among 167 eyes, the following patt

Presumed atypical peripapillary Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease.

PURPOSE: To describe a case of bilateral presumed atypical Harada disease with sequential, not simultaneous, involvement of the peripapillary retina (subretinal fluid) in a healthy patient with no systemic complaints. OBSERVATION: A 35-year-old healthy white man presented with sudden paracentral visual loss in the left eye. His medical history was unremarkable. However, he reported a similar episode 20 months earlier in the right eye that was associated with macular serous retinal detachment. The right eye showed evidence of reactive peripapillary atrophy and pigmentary alteration in the macu

Multimodal imaging of a choroidal granuloma as a first sign of tuberculosis.

Choroidal granuloma is rarely seen as the first sign of tuberculosis(TB). Here we report a case of a 34-year old male with a choroidal mass which was associated with serous retinal detachment on EDI-OCT and the "contact sign" between the neurosensory retina and the retinal pigment epithelium. We analysed the macular microvascular features of tuberculoma with Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography(OCTA). After 3 months of antituberculosis treatment, we observed the shrinkage of granuloma with permanent changes of macular microvasculature in deep capillary plexus and choriocapillaris. In concl

Serous Retinal Detachment in Dome-Shaped Macula Is Associated with Greater Central Choroidal Blood Flow Measured by Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography.

PURPOSE: Dome-shaped macula (DSM) is characterized by an inward bulge in the macula, often associated with a myopic staphyloma. One complication of DSM is particularly studied: foveolar serous retinal detachment (SRD). This study analyzed the variations of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) decorrelation signal in cases of DSM with and without SRD. METHODS: This was a retrospective study including twenty height eyes presenting with DSM. OCT-A scans were recorded, and the intensity of the choroidal decorrelation signal was quantified to analyze choroidal blood flow (CBF) in centr

Development of a rabbit model of persistent hypotony without ciliary body injury.

In order to study the pathophysiological alterations of the ciliary body (CB) during persistent hypotony, it is necessary to develop an animal model without CB injury. In this study, we successfully established a modified model of persistent hypotony without CB injury in New Zealand rabbits. A 23-gauge pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) was performed and a trocar-formed fistula was allowed to remain in situ, to produce a continuous outflow of intraocular fluid. Both eyes underwent PPV with normal intraocular pressure (IOP); eyes with no surgical intervention were used as controls. The IOP was monitor

Purtscher-like retinopathy presented a honeycomb-like pattern in optical coherence topography angiography.

BACKGROUND: To report a case of Purtscher-like retinopathy (PUR) and the optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCT-A) findings before and after treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old male presented with acute onset of vision loss for 2 weeks. Fundus examination revealed cotton-wool spots, retinal haemorrhage, and Purtscher flecken spread around the optic disc in the right eye. He was diagnosed with Purtscher-like retinopathy because he lacked any traumatic medical history. OCT presented some band-like hyperreflective lesions at the inner nuclear layer, which are indicat

Manganese-Enhanced MRI of the Brain in Healthy Volunteers.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The manganese ion is used as an intracellular MR imaging contrast agent to study neuronal function in animal models, but it remains unclear whether manganese-enhanced MR imaging can be similarly useful in humans. Using mangafodipir (Teslascan, a chelated manganese-based contrast agent that is FDA-approved), we evaluated the dynamics of manganese enhancement of the brain and glandular structures in the rostral head and neck in healthy volunteers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We administered mangafodipir intravenously at a rate of 1 mL/minute for a total dose of 5 μmol/kg body

[Extra-ventricular drainage for the treatment of pneumococcal meningitis and hydrocephalus: a case report].

A 53-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of fever and disturbed consciousness with a left-sided toothache from 5 days ago. Neurological examinations revealed a low level of consciousness, nuchal rigidity, bilateral mydriasis, and positive Babinski sign. A lumbar puncture yielded clouded fluid with a WBC 22,698/μl (polynuclear cell 98%), 681 mg/dl of protein and 0 mg/dl of glucose. The antigen of Streptococcus pneumoniae in urine and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were positive. Streptococcus pneumoniae was isolated from CSF culture. Brain CT on admission showed a communicating hydroce

Peripheral exudative hemorrhagic chorioretinopathy.

Peripheral exudative hemorrhagic chorioretinopathy (PEHCR) is relatively rare and especially less known and therefore less often diagnosed condition of the retina periphery predominantly in patients of higher age. Usually temporal periphery is affected. The finding is bilateral in approximately  30 %. Clinically it manifests by multibulbar prominences in periphery, which can sometimes resemble choroidal melanoma. It concerns exudations and hemorrhages under retina (sub-retinal) or under retinal pigment epithelium (sub-RPE). Within weeks or months hemorrhagy is resorbed and flattened and chorio

Coccidioidomycosis Chorioretinitis.

Coccidioidomycosis is an invasive fungus found primarily in the soil of Southwestern United States, Mexico, and Central America. Primary disease mostly presents as a pulmonary disease although multiple organ systems can be affected through lymphohematogenous dissemination, with ocular seeding extremely rare. When present, the anterior segment structures are most commonly affected. Isolated choroid and/or vitreal disease has been reported infrequently. This is a case of chorioretinitis with vitreal involvement.

A rare case of giant subretinal migration of cysticercosis cyst with extensive epiretinal membrane and subretinal fibrosis.

Cysticercosis is caused by cysticercus cellulosae, the larval form of pork tapeworm. In intraocular cysticercosis the cyst enters the subretinal space via the choroid and then gains entry into the vitreous cavity by piercing the retina. It is well established that the cyst can incite extensive intraocular inflammation. Other complications such as epiretinal membrane and cataract have been reported in the literature. Thus far, epiretinal membrane in intraocular cysticercosis has been reported at the site of entry of the cyst into the vitreous cavity. The data on the extent of epiretinal membran

Effects of 7-Methylxanthine on Deprivation Myopia and Retinal Dopamine Release in Chickens.

INTRODUCTION: Intake of 7-methylxanthine (7-MX), an adenosine receptor (AR) antagonist, has been shown to inhibit school myopia in children and deprivation myopia in rhesus monkeys, but the underlying mechanisms are not known. Also retinal dopamine seems to be involved in the control of eye growth, and in the brain, ARs and dopamine receptors interact widely by heteromerization. We have studied whether 7-MX can inhibit deprivation myopia also in chickens and whether inhibition may involve the retinal dopamine system. METHODS: 7-MX was applied by either tube-feeding (100 µg/g body weight, twic

Plasma levels of inflammatory chemokines in patients with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy.

PURPOSE: Chemokines are a group of cytokines that guide immune cell migration. We studied plasma levels of inflammatory chemokines in patients with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) and compared with healthy age-matched control individuals. METHODS: This was a clinic-based prospective case-control study of participants (n = 60) with either PCV (n = 26) or age-matched healthy controls (n = 34). We sampled fresh venous blood and isolated plasma for analysis. We used U-PLEX Human Assays to quantify concentrations of the inflammatory chemokines MCP-1/CCL2, RANTES/CCL5, eotaxin/CCL11, IP-10/

Suprachoroideal haemorrhage in postoperative period of antiglaucoma surgery, case report.

Suprachoroidal haemorrhage (SCH) is a serious complication of intraocular procedures. Physiologically there is only a minimal amount of fluid in the suprachoroid space, pathologically the fluid volume increases, which causes ablation of the choroid. SCH could be divided into different cathegories, according to the character of the fluid into serous and haemorrhagic; by the time of occurrence in relation to the surgery into peroperative and postoperative. Diagnosis is based on biomicroscopic and ultrasound examinations. The ocular risk factors for SCH are glaucoma, myopia and aphakia; systemic

Multifocal choroidal melanoma in oculodermal melanocytosis in an Asian Indian.

A 51-year-old Asian Indian male with right oculodermal melanocytosis presented with a blurred visual acuity of 20/40. Upon fundus examination, he was discovered to have two independent pigmented choroidal melanomas in the temporal juxtapapillary region and inferiorly, in the region of trace clinical sectoral choroidal melanocytosis. The patient underwent enucleation, and on histopathology the two tumors were found to be in the area of choroidal melanocytosis, in continuity with each other. Multifocal choroidal melanoma is an exceedingly rare diagnosis. Ocular melanocytosis is a known predispos
