Case Reports of Four Patients with HPV-Positive Head and Neck Cancer of Non-Oropharyngeal Origin Undergoing Liquid Biopsy for Circulating Cell-Free HPV-DNA before, during, and after Treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a risk factor for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) and is sometimes found in other head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs), where its role is not as clearly defined. To gain more knowledge regarding response to therapy, and the monitoring of cell-free HPV DNA (cfHPV-DNA) in plasma in HPV-positive (HPV+) non-OPSCC HNSCC, the presence and levels of cfHPV-DNA in the plasma of four patients were followed before, during, and after therapy and correlated to treatment response. CASE PRESENTATIONS: Two HPV+ nasopharyngeal cancer patient

Detection of androgen receptor (AR) splice variants across diverse prostatic and non-prostatic tumor types using the TruSight Oncology 500 (TSO500) assay.

BACKGROUND: Androgen Receptor splice variants (AR-Vs) are known biomarkers of resistance to hormone therapy in prostate (CaP) and breast cancer (BC). However, pancancer interrogations of AR-Vs are lacking. METHODS: The MayoComplete Solid Tumor Panel, with DNA and RNA subpanels targeting 515 and 55 genes, respectively, was used to profile 5573 solid tumors. Relevant clinicopathologic and molecular features were summarized for tumors with detectable AR-Vs. RESULTS: AR-Vs were identified in 46 of 5573 (0.8%) tumors from 28 males and 18 females with a mean age of 68 years (range, 11 to 98). AR-V

Anatomy, histology, and histochemistry of the harderian and lacrimal glands in the great spotted woodpecker (dendrocopos major).

The Harderian and lacrimal glands are the main orbital glands of the avian lacrimal apparatus and contribute to the tear film, nictitating membrane function, and local protection of the ocular surface. Although the ocular adnexa have been well described in domestic birds, the morphology and function of these organs remain poorly characterized in free-living species. This study aimed to characterize the morphology and histochemistry of these glands in the Great Spotted Woodpecker. The material consisted of 18 individuals found dead in the natural environment in Poland. Gross anatomical, morphom

Neuroanatomy of the Lacrimal Drainage System: What We Know and What We Need to Know.

While the microscopic anatomy and histology of the lacrimal drainage system have been well described, the same cannot be said of its neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, which are largely unknown. Earlier studies have delineated several aspects of lacrimal drainage anatomy, including discrepancies between living and cadaveric dimensions, radiologic anatomy, endoscopic anatomy, and ultrastructural features. However, unlike the peripheral nervous system elsewhere in the body, the neural topography and neural mapping of the lacrimal drainage system are poorly understood. The present review aims to e

Developmental anatomy of the lacrimal sac fossa and nasolacrimal canal: a CT study of paediatric patients.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding the developmental anatomy of the lacrimal sac fossa (LF) and nasolacrimal canal (NLC) is critical for paediatric lacrimal diseases. METHODS: This observational study analysed cranial CT images of 144 paediatric patients undergoing imaging for non-ocular conditions and 80 adults with phthisis bulbi as a matched comparison. Measurements included LF vertical dimension (height) and anteroposterior dimension (width), NLC diameter and vertical dimension, and frontal process of the maxilla (FPM) structures. Developmental changes were assessed using the generalised additive

Exploring patient-reported outcomes after lacrimal surgery in a large monocentric cohort: cross-cultural adaptation of the Italian Lac-Q.

PURPOSE: To translate in Italian and revalidate the Lacrimal Symptom Questionnaire (Lac-Q), a symptom-based patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) for patients undergoing dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) for nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NDO). The original English Lac-Q was validated on 17 patients; this study expands its evaluation to a substantially larger cohort. METHODS: The Lac-Q was translated and back-translated following standardized cross-cultural adaptation guidelines. A prospective cohort of adult patients with symptomatic NDO scheduled for DCR was recruited. Participants completed the

Filarial Worm Infestation of the Nasolacrimal Duct: A Rare Orbital Presentation.

Filarial infestation of the nasolacrimal duct is exceptionally rare and often misdiagnosed as benign lacrimal pathology. We present a 12-year-old boy with progressive medial canthal swelling initially suspected to be a dermoid cyst or inflammatory lesion. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-defined enhancing lesion at the nasolacrimal duct with preseptal edema. Histopathology demonstrated a parasite with a thick eosinophilic cuticular wall and inflammatory infiltrate rich in eosinophils and foreign-body giant cells, consistent with filarial infestation, possibly Onchocerca species. A metal-organic framework-based trilayer biomimetic coating on lacrimal stents for dual-drug therapy to prevent restenosis.

Postoperative reocclusion remains a major challenge in lacrimal duct stent implantation, primarily driven by persistent inflammation and fibrosis. To address this issue, we developed a coating system that integrates drug release with interfacial bioactivity regulation. A polydopamine-hybridized zeolitic imidazolate framework (pZIF-8) was synthesized via a one-pot method and co-loaded with mometasone furoate (Elocon Cream) and verteporfin (anti-fibrotic) to construct a reactive oxygen species (ROS)/pH responsive nanocarrier. A trilayered coating consisting of a polydopamine (PDA) adhesive layer

Congenital nasolacrimal duct cyst complicating as an orbital abscess.

An otherwise healthy female infant presented with left-sided, rapidly progressive, severe periorbital swelling, erythema and proptosis for 7 days' duration. Imaging revealed multiple fluid-filled lobulated pockets in both intraconal and extraconal orbital spaces suggestive of multiple orbital abscesses which had an extension to the nasal cavity. Surgical drainage of the abscess was done along with administration of intravenous antibiotics. Diagnostic lacrimal system probing revealed soft stop warranting a nasal endoscopy during which a membranous thick-walled outpouching from the inferior meat

CT analysis of the prelacrimal recess: an access route to the maxillary sinus.

PURPOSE: Accessing the anterolateral maxillary sinus is challenging. The endoscopic pre-lacrimal recess approach (PLRA) involves removing the medial wall of the pre-lacrimal recess (PLR) between the piriform aperture (PA) and the nasolacrimal duct (NLD) while preserving the inferior turbinate and NLD. We studied the radiologic dimensions of the medial wall of the PLR to assess the feasibility of this approach across different maxillary sinus pathologies. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 104 triplanar CT scans (208 sides) was conducted in patients with maxillary sinus pathologies. Anteropo

A comparative study between the anterior flap technique of dacryocystorhinostomy with and without silicone intubation.

INTRODUCTION: Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is a surgery in which a direct communication is made between the lacrimal sac and the nasal cavity through a bony ostium to bypass an obstruction in the nasolacrimal duct (NLD) and therefore facilitate tear drainage. There are two main types of DCR: external and endonasal. The external DCR is the gold standard procedure and the most preferred to treat primary acquired NLD obstruction (NLDO), with a reported success rate that reaches up to 97%. AIM: This retrospective cohort study was carried out to assess the functional and anatomical success rates of

Three-Dimensional Morphometric Analysis of the Maxillary Sinus-Nasal Complex in Adolescents With Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate Using Cone‑Beam Computed Tomography.

OBJECTIVE: Unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) often causes craniofacial asymmetry and maxillary growth disturbance, but differences in the maxillary sinus-nasal complex between cleft and noncleft sides remain unclear. This study used cone‑beam computed tomography (CBCT) to evaluate three‑dimensional features of the maxillary sinus, nasal septum, and nasolacrimal duct in adolescents with UCLP. METHODS: Preoperative CBCT scans of 50 nonsyndromic adolescents with UCLP aged 9 to 15 years were retrospectively analysed. The maxillary sinus height, width, depth, volume, primary ostium opening di

Paired nasal mucosa and lacrimal sac microbiome features in recurrence after endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy.

PURPOSE: The nasal cavity and lacrimal sac are anatomically continuous; however, whether their resident microbiota influence surgical outcomes after endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) remains unclear. This study aimed to determine whether preoperative lacrimal sac microbiome features are associated with postoperative recurrence after endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy. METHODS: In this prospective study, paired lacrimal sac and ipsilateral nasal mucosa samples were collected intraoperatively from 17 patients (22 operated sides) with acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Combined Endoscopic and External Dacryocystectomy Surgical Approach for Rare Tumors of the Lacrimal Sac.

Lacrimal sac epithelial tumors are rare and often present with subtle symptoms. We report 2 cases managed with combined external dacryocystectomy and endoscopic endonasal resection. Case 1 involved a 59-year-old female with lacrimal sac inverted papilloma extending into the nasolacrimal duct and inferior meatus. Case 2 involved a 79-year-old male with a chronically draining medial canthal wound and progressive induration after prior cyst excision, ultimately diagnosed as lacrimal sac oncocytoma. In both cases, preoperative imaging and clinical features demonstrated nasolacrimal duct involvemen

Cellular and molecular mechanisms of nasolacrimal duct obstruction: New insights into CD4+ T cell-MIF-fibroblast pathways.

INTRODUCTION: Nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) is a common ophthalmic condition characterized by epiphora and ocular discharge. Its etiology remains poorly understood, and treatment primarily relies on surgical intervention due to a lack of effective drugs. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the single-cell transcriptional landscape of the nasolacrimal duct in patients with nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) and to elucidate the immunoregulatory mechanisms underlying the key fibrotic process driving disease progression. METHODS: Nasolacrimal duct tissues were obtained from 4 menopausal female

Evaluation and analysis of tear fluid volume and surgical outcomes for lacrimal punctum obstructive diseases using anterior segment OCT.

BACKGROUND: Lacrimal punctum obstructive diseases are a frequent cause of persistent epiphora, leading to discomfort, impaired quality of life, and repeated clinic visits. Accurate and objective assessment of tear dynamics is essential for diagnosis and evaluation of surgical outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate tear fluid volume using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) and correlate these objective parameters with surgical outcomes in patients undergoing procedures for punctal obstruction. METHODS: Fifty-two eyes from 34 patients with punctal stenosis or occlusion were evalu

Lacrimal drainage system involvement in CHARGE syndrome: a two-case report.

CHARGE syndrome is a rare multisystem disorder, with ocular colobomas being the most frequent ophthalmic manifestation. Lacrimal drainage system anomalies are distinctly uncommon, with only a handful of cases reported. We describe two children with CHARGE syndrome who presented with bilateral lower punctal agenesis and complex nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO). The first patient had recurrent dacryocystitis and long-standing epiphora; examination revealed bilateral absence of the lower puncta, right NLDO, and partial stenosis of the left nasolacrimal duct. He underwent right external dacryo
