PURPOSE: Global studies have shown varying trends of CNS tumors within geographic regions. In Colombia, the epidemiologic characteristics of CNS neoplasms are not well elucidated. We aimed to provide a summary of the descriptive epidemiology of primary CNS tumors among the urban population of Cali, Colombia.
METHODS: We conducted a time-trend study from 1962 to 2019 using the Population-Based Cali Cancer Registry. The age-standardized rates per 100,000 person-years were obtained by direct method using the world standard population. Results were stratified by sex, age group at diagnosis, and h

INTRODUCTION: Gangliogliomas rarely occur in the sella or suprasellar region and are almost never seen in the pituitary stalk. Seven cases of gangliogliomas occurring in this region have been reported; only one case involved a tumor within the pituitary stalk. Of the six tumors external to the pituitary stalk, two occurred in the neurohypophysis, one was in the adenohypophysis, the location of one was unspecified, and two extensively invaded the optic chiasm, hypothalamus and brainstem. This is only the second reported case of a pituitary stalk ganglioglioma, and it is unique in its use of an

OBJECTIVE: To report on a case of malignant hyperthermia in a child after a magnetic resonance imaging of the skull was performed using sevoflurane anesthesia.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 3-year-old boy admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit after presenting clinical and laboratory findings consistent with unspecified viral meningoencephalitis. While the patient was sedated, a magnetic resonance imaging of the skul was performed using propofol followed by the administration of sevoflurane through a laryngeal mask in order to continue anesthesia. Approximately three hours after the start of the

West Nile virus (WNV) and St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) are closely related mosquito-borne flaviviruses that can cause neuroinvasive disease. No concurrent WNV and SLEV disease outbreaks have previously been identified. When concurrent outbreaks occurred in 2015 in Maricopa County, Arizona, we collected data to describe the epidemiology, and to compare features of patients with WNV and SLEV neuroinvasive disease. We performed enhanced case finding, and gathered information from medical records and patient interviews. A case was defined as a clinically compatible illness and laboratory ev

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have highlighted infratentorial tumor location as a prognostic factor for solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) and hemangiopericytoma (HPC) of the central nervous system (CNS), and spinal location is considered a positive prognostic factor for other tumors of the CNS. While SFT/HPC of the CNS is known to frequently arise from the spinal meninges, there are no case series that report outcomes for spinally located CNS tumors, and their prognosis in relation to intracranial and other CNS-located tumors is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate outcomes for patients with SFT/HPC of

The sacral canal is the continuation of the vertebral canal in the sacrum. The sacral canal contains spinal meninges, lumbar and sacral part of spinal nerves and filum terminale. So sacral canal has been used for the caudal epidural block. During routine osteology demonstration classes for undergraduate students, we observed a dry human sacrum with complete agenesis of the dorsal wall of the sacral canal. Knowledge of these variations is important to diagnose lower back pain, sciatica, caudal regression syndrome and to avoid complications related to caudal epidural block and other spinal surge

OBJECTIVE: Spinal schwannoma remains the third most common intradural spinal tumor following spinal meningioma and ependymoma. The available literature is generally limited to single-institution reports rather than epidemiological investigations. As of 1/1/2004, registration of all benign central nervous system tumors in the United States became mandatory after the Benign Brain Tumor Cancer Registries Amendment Act took action, which provided massive resources for United States population-based epidemiological studies. This article describes the epidemiology of spinal schwannoma in the United

BACKGROUND: Primary melanocytic neoplasms of the central nervous system (CNS) are rare and account for 1% of all melanomas. This study used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database to evaluate the epidemiology of primary CNS melanoma and further characterize their treatment.
METHODS: Data from the National Cancer Institute SEER program, collected from 1973-2015, were retrospectively analyzed. A total of 86 records of malignant melanoma cases with CNS as the primary site were identified, and 54 patients were studied based on the inclusion criteria. Demographic, tumor, an

PURPOSE: Meningiomas are more common in females and 70-80% express the progesterone receptor, raising the possibility that high-dose exogenous estrogen/progesterone exposure, such as occurs during fertility treatments, may increase the risk of developing a meningioma. The goal of this study was to report the incidence of prior fertility treatment in a consecutive series of female meningioma patients.
METHODS: A retrospective review (2015-2018) was performed of female patients with meningioma, and those with prior fertility treatment were compared to those without fertility treatment using sta

OBJECTIVEThe aim of this study was to illustrate the demographic characteristics of meningioma patients and observe the effect of adjuvant radiation therapy on survival by using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. More specifically, the authors aimed to answer the question of whether adjuvant radiotherapy following resection of atypical meningioma confers a cause-specific survival benefit. Additionally, they attempted to add to previous characterizations of the epidemiology of primary meningiomas and assess the effectiveness of the standard of care for benign and a

INTRODUCTION: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is an acute human arboviral infection of the central nervous system caused by a virus that is transmitted to humans mainly by tick bites. TBE is endemic in Europe and has become an increasingly important public health concern in recent years. Cases of TBE in Italy have occurred mainly in the north-east and central parts of the country. Vaccination is recommended for people who live in or visit areas at higher risk of tick bites.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to ascertain the burden of TBE in the Veneto Region (north-east Italy).
METHODS: Case

Tuberculous meningomyelitis is a relatively rare but serious type of nervous system tuberculosis. This disease is caused by invasion of the spinal cord or the spinal meninges tuberculosis. The early symptoms are not typical and lack specificity. It can cause early changes in the MRI. Analysis of the MRI manifestations combined with the clinical manifestations and cere- brospinal fluid examination can facilitate accurate diagnosis of the disease. Early treatment has a clear effect, we want to increase knowledge of the dis- ease by sharing this case in order to reduce clinical misdiagnosis and a

PURPOSE: Chordoma is a low-grade malignant bone tumor derived from embryonic notochord remnants along the axial skeleton. About 50% of chordomas occur in the sacral vertebrae and 35% in the skull base. Most chordomas are extradural and cause extensive bone destruction. Intradural spinal tumors without bone involvement are rare.
METHODS: We herein describe the clinical features of a patient with a chordoma as well as the imaging and pathological manifestations of the tumor.
RESULTS: We encountered an unusual presentation of a C6 and C7 spinal intradural chordoma in a 23-year-old man. He prese

BACKGROUND: Spinal meningiomas are found in patients typically between the ages of 75 and 84: some report the average age to be 50. They occur with an incidence of approximately 1000 patients per year in the US, are mostly single (90%) rather than multiple (10%), and arise from the spinal meninges (arachnoid/dura). Tumors are typically posterior/posterolateral (70%) in location, leaving the remaining 30% in the anterior/anterolateral spinal canal. They produce symptoms and signs of radiculopathy (nerve root) and/or myelopathy (cord compression) depending on their site of origin.
METHODS: Meni

Neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM) is a rare congenital disorder. Most of the cases described in literature for this entity have involvement of the leptomeninges and other structures of brain such as brain stem, temporal lobes, and spinal meninges and no involvement of leptomeninges and presence of lesions in bilateral temporal lobes. NCM without the involvement of leptomeninges should be considered a distinct entity as the prognosis is favorable as compared to cases with leptomeningeal involvement who develop early hydrocephalus and multiple cranial nerve palsies.

Sprague-Dawley rats are amongst the most widely used animals in biomedical research and malignant lymphoma has long been known to be a frequent neoplasm in these animals. A 9-month-old male control Sprague-Dawley rat from a toxicity study showed gelatinous material in the cranial cavity and dark, thickened cerebral meninges at necropsy. At microscopic evaluation of the temporal bone, neoplastic lymphocytes were seen invading several structures of the middle ear. The neoplastic cells appeared to extend from the marrow of the temporal bone, covered the dorsal part of the tympanic cavity wall, an

AIMS: Headaches have not been considered a typical symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS), although since 2000, almost every study showed high prevalence. We screened 50 MS patients at the time of first occurrence of neurological symptoms and found the highest prevalence of headache in MS that was ever recorded (78%). Postmortem histological analyses of MS patients' brains revealed lymphoid follicle-like structures in the cerebral meninges and a pathophysiological link between headache, and high inflammatory activity especially in the initial phase of MS could be suspected. The aim of this study w

BACKGROUND: Bacterial meningitis is one of the most common causes of hearing loss. Hearing loss develops within the first few days following the onset of meningitis, highlighting the importance of early audiology referrals. Post-meningitis hearing loss may lead to cochlear ossification, making traditional cochlear implantation impossible.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the duration of time from meningitis diagnosis to audiology referral. A second objective was to determine the prevalence and severity of meningitis-related sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospit
