Trends and Disparities in Mortality Due to Secondary Malignant Neoplasm of the Brain and Cerebral Meninges in the United States (1990-2020).

OBJECTIVES: Secondary brain cancer is a serious condition associated with poor outcomes and high mortality. However, long-term mortality trends in the United States have not been well described. This study assessed national mortality trends from 1999 to 2020. METHOD: Using data from the CDC WONDER Multiple Cause of Death database (1999-2020) for U.S. adults aged ≥25 years, we analyzed age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) per 100,000 population using ICD-10 code C79.3 for secondary brain cancer Mortality rates were stratified by year, sex, race/ethnicity, census region, urbanization level, and

The Aging Meninges: Anatomical and Immunological Remodeling as Emerging Diagnostic Biomarkers of Cerebral Senescence-A Narrative Review.

Background/Objectives: Aging is a universal biological process characterized by progressive structural, cellular, and molecular alterations that contribute to functional decline and increased susceptibility to disease. In recent years, the cerebral meninges have emerged as an active regulatory interface between the central nervous system and peripheral tissues, with growing evidence supporting their involvement in immune surveillance, fluid homeostasis, and age-related neuropathology. Methods: This narrative review provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge regarding a

Diabetes is associated with a decreased risk of meningiomas: a mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas are the commonest primary intracranial tumors, but the risk factors are complex and not fully understood. Type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus (T1DM and T2DM) are frequently occurring endocrine diseases, but their relationship with meningiomas is debated. Obesity and elevated body mass index (BMI) are known risk factors for meningiomas but often confound with diabetes. We aim to address this controversy using mendelian randomization a method inherently robust to confounding. METHODS: We used mendelian randomization on genetic instruments for T1DM and T2DM to assess the risks

Sturge-Weber syndrome with cemento-ossifying fibroma in the maxilla and giant odontoma in the mandible: A case report.

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a neurocutaneous syndrome with vascular lesions of the cerebral meninges, port wine spots on the face, and glaucoma of the eyes; it is a congenital, non-genetic disease whose etiology and mechanisms are unknown. In this report, we describe a rare case of SWS with unilateral large odontogenic tumors in the maxilla and mandible. The histopathological diagnosis of the maxillary bone lesion on biopsy was juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma, which is considered a type of ossifying fibroma of craniofacial bone origin. However, the final pathological diagnosis of th

Epidemiology of primary brain tumor among adolescents and adults in Palestine: a retrospective study from 2018 to 2023.

BACKGROUNDS: Primary brain tumors (PBTs) are uncommon, but they significantly increase the risk of disability and death. There is a deficiency of data concerning the epidemiology and anatomical distribution of PBTs among adults in Palestine. METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study in which data were collected from the clinical reports of Palestinian patients diagnosed with PBTs at Al-Makassed Hospital during the period (2018-2023). RESULTS: In Palestinian adolescents and adults, the incidence rate of PBTs was 3.92 per 100,000 person-years. Glioblastoma (18.8%) was the most common type ide

Risk Factors for Pediatric Intracranial Neoplasms in the Kids' Inpatient Database.

INTRODUCTION: In children and adolescents, brain and central nervous system (CNS) tumors are the leading types of cancers. Past studies have found differing rates of intracranial cancers among races and identified additional cancer risk factors. This study aimed to see if these differences can be substantiated with further investigation of the latest version (2019) of the Kids' Inpatient Database (KID). METHODS: A total of 7,818 pediatric patients <21 years old in KID with ICD-10 codes consisting of malignant neoplasms of the brain, brainstem, and cerebral meninges (C700, C709-C719) were q

Immunohistochemical visualization of lymphatic vessels in human dura mater: methodological perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Despite greatly renewed interest concerning meningeal lymphatic function over recent years, the lymphatic structures of human dura mater have been less characterized. The available information derives exclusively from autopsy specimens. This study addressed methodological aspects of immunohistochemistry for visualization and characterization of lymphatic vessels in the dura of patients. METHODS: Dura biopsies were obtained from the right frontal region of the patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) who underwent shunt surgery as part of treatment. The dura sp

Widespread distribution of lymphatic vessels in human dura mater remote from sinus veins.

Background and purpose: Previous experimental studies have shown that meningeal lymphatic vessels are located primarily along the walls of the dural sinus veins. Whether they are more widespread throughout human dura mater has presently not been characterized. The present study explored in humans whether meningeal lymphatic vessels may be identified remote from the sinus veins and whether they differ in the various location of dura mater. Methods: We included 15 patients who underwent neurosurgery, in whom dura mater was removed as part of the planned procedure. Tissue was prepared for immunoh

Increased time to surgery and worse perioperative outcome in benign brain tumor patients with COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic caused significant disruptions to healthcare systems around the world, due to both high resource utilization and concern for disease spread. Delays in non-emergent surgeries have also affected chronic disease management, including that of benign brain tumors such as meningiomas and pituitary adenomas. To evaluate the effect of COVID-19 infection on benign brain tumor resection rates and subsequent perioperative and inpatient outcomes, this study utilized the 2020 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) to investigate rates of surgical resection, time to surgery, and m

"Ependymal-in" Gradient of Thalamic Damage in Progressive Multiple Sclerosis.

Leptomeningeal and perivenular infiltrates are important contributors to cortical grey matter damage and disease progression in multiple sclerosis (MS). Whereas perivenular inflammation induces vasculocentric lesions, leptomeningeal involvement follows a subpial "surface-in" gradient. To determine whether similar gradient of damage occurs in deep grey matter nuclei, we examined the dorsomedial thalamic nuclei and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from 41 postmortem secondary progressive MS cases compared with 5 non-neurological controls and 12 controls with other neurological diseases. CSF/epe

Lymphotoxin-alpha expression in the meninges causes lymphoid tissue formation and neurodegeneration.

Organized meningeal immune cell infiltrates are suggested to play an important role in cortical grey matter pathology in the multiple sclerosis brain, but the mechanisms involved are as yet unresolved. Lymphotoxin-alpha plays a key role in lymphoid organ development and cellular cytotoxicity in the immune system and its expression is increased in the CSF of naïve and progressive multiple sclerosis patients and post-mortem meningeal tissue. Here we show that persistently increased levels of lymphotoxin-alpha in the cerebral meninges can give rise to lymphoid-like structures and underlying multi

Diffusion-Weighted Imaging Combined with Perfusion-Weighted Imaging under Segmentation Algorithm in the Diagnosis of Melanoma.

This study is aimed at exploring the value of magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) combined with perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI) for diagnosing melanoma under a three-dimensional (3D) hybrid segmentation algorithm. 40 patients with melanoma were collected as research objects and subjected to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination. A segmentation model was constructed and the original images were input. The noise contained in the images was preprocessed and normalized, and the mixed level set segmentation was performed after linear fusion of the images. Imaging findings we

Clinical picture, diagnostics and treatment of bacterial meningitis.

Bacterial meningitis is a serious infectious disease of the cerebral meninges, which occurs worldwide and threatens the lives of people of all ages. The largest number of cases in developed countries is caused by the gram-positive bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae. Other more common agents are Neisseria meningitidis serotype B and Listeria monocytogenes. Fever is the most commonly reported symptom in paediatric patients, occurring in up to 93% of cases. Further, it is possible to observe headache, vomiting and positive meningeal phenomena. The most common symptoms in adults are fever, headach

Meningoencephalomyelitis in domestic cats: 3 cases of Pasteurella multocida infection and literature review.

Neurologic diseases are common in domestic cats, and infectious agents are suspected to be the primary cause in 30-45% of cases. Among infectious etiologies, those of bacterial origin are only sporadically characterized in the literature, with few of these reports correlating gross and histologic findings with confirmatory bacteriologic identification. Here, we describe bacterial meningitis and meningoencephalomyelitis associated with Pasteurella multocida in 3 domestic cats. Purulent exudate expanding the cerebral meninges was grossly evident in 2 of the cases. In all 3 cases, histologic chan

Fatal cerebral cuterebrosis in a dog.

A 4-year-old intact female Yorkshire Terrier presented an acute onset of hypersalivation and depressed mentation. The owner reported that the dog displayed tremors, right-sided torticollis, right-sided head tilt, and lifting of the left forelimb. The dog appeared restless and confused, and the condition progressed to lethargy and death on the way to an emergency hospital. At necropsy, a single 10 mm long x 1 mm wide, pale gray, botfly larva with black spines was found along the cerebral meninges. Areas of hemorrhage were noted in the right cerebral hemisphere. Microscopically, these areas also
