Visual Perspective Shapes Subjective Experience: Dissociable Parietal Contributions to the Constructive Nature of Memory.

Subjective features of memory are often treated as secondary to the objective content of remembered events. However, growing evidence suggests that these features actively shape how memories are constructed, experienced, and used. Rather than treating visual perspective as a peripheral correlate of subjectivity, this review positions it as a key mechanism that shapes the memory. Because perspective can be flexibly controlled and reliably measured, it offers a unique window into how retrieval goals interact with mental simulation to produce vivid and emotionally resonant recollections. Precuneus and Superior Parietal Lobule: Morphology and Evolution in the Human Genus.

BACKGROUND: Humans display larger and more complex parietal lobes, when compared with other primates. The superior parietal lobule is a region still poorly known in terms of comparative and evolutionary neuroanatomy, although at least its medial region, the precuneus, is apparently expanded in our species. SUMMARY: In this article, I review 20 years of personal research on the morphology and evolution of this cortical element. The precuneus is particularly variable among adult humans, mostly in its dorsal and anterior areas. This large individual variability seems already settled at birth. Du

Control of representation updating by higher-order thalamus enables history-based decision-making.

When sensory information is ambiguous, we must interpret current inputs based on a representation constructed from our previous experiences. Although appropriately updating this internal representation to track environmental changes is essential for behavior, the neural basis of this dynamic integration remains unknown. Using a combination of multi-area single-unit recordings and optogenetic techniques in mice under both behavioral and passive conditions, we find that interactions between the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and its higher-order thalamic counterpart, the pulvinar (PUL), are nec

The role of the angular gyrus in memory for encoded perspective and subjective re-experiencing.

Remembering personal events typically involves reconstructing our original first-person perspective, often accompanied by a vivid sense of re-experiencing the past. The Angular Gyrus (AnG) has been implicated in both perspective reconstruction and subjective memory experience, yet its specific contribution remains unclear. We investigated the role of the AnG across three studies using a behavioural paradigm in which healthy adults (aged 18-35) encoded a naturalistic video. At retrieval, participants judged whether test images matched their original perspective and rated subjective aspects of t

Affective and neural modulation of smart device-related stimuli following a single session of evaluative conditioning.

BACKGROUND: Evaluative conditioning (EC) has shown potential to reduce maladaptive affective biases underlying problematic health-related behaviors. However, there is limited evidence applying EC to smart device-related stimuli. We examined whether EC training can modify affective and neural responses to these stimuli in a proof-of-concept study conducted in a non-clinical sample. METHODS: Healthy young participants underwent a single session of either negative or benign EC, during which smart device images served as conditioned stimuli (CSs) and were paired with negative or positive words as

Resting-state functional connectivity in default mode and frontoparietal networks predicts directed forgetting.

Directed forgetting (DF) refers to the goal-directed modulation of memory, typically manifested as superior memory for information cued to be remembered (TBR) compared to information cued to be forgotten (TBF). Although prior studies have emphasized task-evoked neural mechanisms of DF, it remains unclear whether intrinsic brain network organization contributes to individual differences in memory control. The present study examined whether resting-state functional connectivity within and between the default mode network (DMN) and frontoparietal network (FPN) predicts individual differences in D

Brain Dynamics Underlying Reaching Movements Under Uncertainty.

Motor responses are influenced by inferred predictability, but it remains unclear how uncertainty, or its inverse, precision, is encoded within motor control networks. In this study, we combined computational modeling of reaching movement response speed with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We used a cueing paradigm with changing cue predictability (~50%, ~70%, and ~90%) to test how predictive inference about left/right reaching responses affected cortical activity and network connectivity in 28 healthy young adults. Behavioral results showed that the response speed differences be

Neural signatures of serial order access in verbal working memory.

Serial order working memory allows information to be maintained as structured sequences, yet the neural formats supporting access to serial position remain unclear. Behavioral evidence suggests that temporal order can be recoded into spatial representations, but serial order may also rely on representations that generalize beyond the spatial configuration of encoding. Here, participants memorized digit sequences presented either left-to-right or right-to-left, thereby reversing the mapping between ordinal position and external space while keeping retrieval cues centrally presented during fMRI.

Long-Term Outcomes of Nonlesional Extratemporal Epilepsy Surgery Using Subdural Grid Implantation.

OBJECTIVES: Nonlesional extratemporal lobe epilepsy (ETE) remains one of the most challenging forms of drug-resistant epilepsy to treat surgically because seizure onset zones are often poorly defined on conventional neuroimaging. The long-term effectiveness of subdural grid-guided surgery in this population remains incompletely understood. This study aimed to evaluate long-term surgical outcomes in patients with intractable nonlesional extratemporal epilepsy who underwent subdural grid-guided epilepsy surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted from January 1, 2014 to

Stereoelectroencephalography-based anatomo-electro-clinical subtyping reveals network-specific organization in parietal lobe epilepsy.

AIMS: This study aimed to use stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) to delineate the anatomo-electro-clinical correlations between seizure semiology and Brodmann area-based functional subregions in parietal lobe epilepsy (PLE), so as to improve the precise localization of seizure onset and the accuracy of presurgical diagnosis. METHODS: Patients with PLE who underwent SEEG were retrospectively included. Intracranial electrode contacts were localized based on Brodmann area (BA) anatomical divisions. Seizure semiology and ictal SEEG evolution were systematically quantified using a predefined scor

Temporal Interference Modulates Medial Temporal and Frontoparietal Activity During Mnemonic Discrimination: A High-Resolution Whole-Brain fMRI Investigation.

Mnemonic discrimination-the ability to distinguish between existing memories and similar new inputs-supports accurate memory in the face of interference (e.g., in a card game, recognizing that the card you are currently seeing, the King of Hearts, is distinct from the King of Diamonds you encountered earlier in the same hand). Although hippocampal pattern separation has been emphasized as a key mechanism for this process, recent theoretical frameworks and empirical findings suggest that surrounding medial temporal lobe and cortical regions also contribute by resolving interference. An importan

Cardiovascular risk factors and regional neuropathology in autopsy-confirmed Alzheimer disease.

Cardiovascular risk factors are implicated in Alzheimer disease (AD) progression and its neuropathological hallmarks but their specific contributions to regional brain pathology within AD remain understudied. In this cohort study (n = 276), we examined associations between diabetes, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia (present vs absent), and neuropathologies in decedents with pathologically confirmed Intermediate/High AD from 3 Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers. Regional arteriolosclerosis, cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), cored plaques (CPs), diffuse plaques (DPs), neurofibrillary ta

Connectivity-Guided Individualized iTBS of the Posterior Parietal Cortex in Enduring Anorexia Nervosa: Network-Level Target Engagement and Multimodal Response in a Single Case.

AIMS: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe, often enduring disorder with scarce biological treatments, largely unable to address its core implicit features: habit-like food restriction and body-experience disturbances. We report a single-case application of resting-state connectivity-guided intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) to the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), a hub for body representation, peripersonal space, and affordance-based action. METHODS: A 31-year-old woman with 12 years of treatment-resistant restricting AN, enrolled in an ongoing sham-controlled feasibility trial, underw

Rapid changes in risk attitudes originate from Bayesian inference on parietal magnitude representations.

Risk attitudes-the willingness to accept uncertainty for larger potential rewards-are often treated as a stable individual trait, yet people's risky choices change markedly across contexts and even across repetitions of identical decisions. Here we show, using modelling and neuroimaging, that such rapid changes emerge from Bayesian inference on noisy magnitude representations in parietal cortex. Participants underwent fMRI while choosing between safe and risky options that are either held in working memory or shown on screen. Options held in working memory are noisier and more prone to central

Greater temporo-occipital gray matter volume and frontoparietal cortical thickness in post-menopausal women: a UK Biobank study.

Menopause is a critical transitional stage in women's lives, yet evidence on its impact on brain structure remains inconsistent, and large-sample neuroimaging studies are limited. Here, we applied whole-brain morphometry techniques to evaluate differences between pre- and post-menopausal women in terms of gray matter volume, cortical thickness and cortical gyrification. We processed and analyzed T1-weighted brain scans of 4098 women (1033 pre-menopausal; 3065 post-menopausal) from the UK Biobank. Post-menopausal women exhibited greater gray matter volume than pre-menopausal women primarily in

Using data-driven, lesion-symptom mapping to study the relationship between neural and theoretical components of numeracy.

Numeracy, the ability to understand and manipulate numbers, is a crucial foundational ability for many daily life skills. Numeracy tasks have been categorized using different taxonomic approaches, and understanding of the relationship between tasks categories and neural models of numeracy remains poor. In this study, we use the lesion method to address this key gap. The study employs a data-driven approach with support vector regression lesion-symptom mapping (SVR-LSM) of extracted factors from two left hemisphere chronic stroke survivor datasets: one with data from a battery of math and langu

Repeatable, low-drift recordings in behaving nonhuman primates using flexible microelectrodes.

Neurophysiological recordings from nonhuman primates rely on rigid microelectrode arrays whose mechanical mismatch with brain tissue causes neuronal drift and unstable single-unit recordings. Here we present a flexible microelectrode platform for repeated recordings in awake rhesus macaques. We fabricated a 32-channel, 7-μm-thick Parylene-C array and developed a telescopic insertion method using concentric guide tubes and a retractable microwire shuttle to repeatedly deliver free-floating arrays through intact dura using standard recording chambers. Across two animals, we optimized the electro

Resting-state functional connectivity alterations and neurodevelopmental outcomes in neonates at high risk of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: High risk of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury during the neonatal period may disrupt early brain maturation, yet its impact on large-scale functional network organization and later neurodevelopment remains insufficiently understood. METHODS: Resting-state functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to characterize cortical functional connectivity in neonates at high risk of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury and controls. Functional connectivity, multivariate pattern analysis, and graph-theoretical approaches were applied to examine group differences in network organization and

Gratitude mediates the link of precuneus volume to depression in older women.

Depression in older people is a major contributor to global disease burden and functional impairment. While trait gratitude, a stable tendency to appreciate others' help, has been shown to alleviate depressive symptoms across populations, less is known about its neuroanatomical substrates and protective neuropsychological mechanisms against depression symptoms in aging populations. Here, we investigated the structural neural correlates of trait gratitude in 120 community-dwelling older women using voxel-based morphometry analysis of T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging data. First, the whole

Approach through the intraparietal sulcus to the ventricular atrium: A cadaveric microanatomical and morphometric study.

BACKGROUND: The intraparietal sulcus (IPS) provides a natural transsulcal corridor to the lateral ventricular atrium that minimizes disruption of white matter tracts. However, no previous study has quantified the dissection angles from multiple topographic points along the sulcus. METHODS: Descriptive study conducted in the 9 adult human cerebral hemispheres available for dissection. IPS macroscopic morphology was classified and its length was measured. From the anterior, midpoint, and posterior points of the sulcus, straight pins were directed toward the ventricular atrium, and their angles
