This study examined how prolonged screen time (ST) affects brain network efficiency in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using graph theory analysis. Participants (N = 164) were divided into low-dose exposure (LDE, n = 108) and high-dose exposure (HDE, n = 56) groups. Clinical data and brain topological properties were compared between groups. The HDE group exhibited significantly greater autism severity and poorer language development than those with LDE. The HDE group showed significantly reduced global (Eglob) and local efficiency (Eloc). The LDE group exhibited higher nodal effi

Objective. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a range of motor and non-motor symptoms. Despite extensive research, the neural structure of time distortion, remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the neurobiological origins of time distortion by analyzing dynamic features in PD patients compared to control participants.Approach. We used PD and control electroencephalography (EEG) signals to investigate brain function during time distortion. The EEG signal was recorded during an interval-timing task. Following artifact reduction and EEG signal segme

Mental fatigue from prolonged cognitive tasks impairs performance, yet this decline is often non-linear. This suggests the brain engages active self-regulatory mechanisms to recover, though the neural basis of this recovery process remains unclear. We investigated this phenomenon using electroencephalography (EEG) during a continuous 120-minute boundary avoidance task. Behaviorally, we confirmed a non-linear performance curve that featured a significant recovery stage following an initial decline. The decline stage showed classic neural fatigue signatures, including increased delta and alpha p

BACKGROUND: Freezing of gait (FOG) is a symptom that occurs in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and various other gait disorders. Primary progressive freezing of gait (PPFG) disorder is a rare clinical syndrome in which FOG persists for at least three years without any other clinical symptoms. We report a patient with long-lasting isolated FOG accompanied by marked parietal cortical atrophy to explore its potential pathophysiological significance. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old man presented with a one-year history of FOG and recurrent unprovoked falls. Neurological examinations revealed FOG without

Non-primary motor areas, including dorsal premotor cortex (PMd), ventral premotor cortex (PMv), and posterior parietal cortex (PPC), contribute to movement planning, but how these regions differentially shape kinematic features of goal-directed movements, and how this specialization is associated with functional connectivity within the frontoparietal network, remains of interest, particularly in relation to recovery after stroke. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and kinematic assessments to explore how these areas influence reaching

Adaptive behavior is central to coping with dynamic environmental changes. Although functional neuroanatomical and neurophysiological considerations suggest that information must be exchanged during adaptive behavior and similar predictions can be derived from cognitive science concepts, attempts to delineate the directed information transfer in theta and alpha networks during behavioral adaptation are rare. Using task switching as an experimental vehicle, we examined directed communication in theta and alpha band networks in 51 healthy individuals. We combined EEG-beamforming with an artifici

Trust is a cornerstone of human cooperation, yet it unfolds differently depending on who we interact with and under what circumstances. Understanding how the brain integrates social traits and contextual demands is key to explaining why we sometimes choose to trust-and sometimes refrain. Although prior studies have identified neural regions involved in trust, it remains unclear how dispositional factors, such as Social Value Orientation (SVO), interact with the strategic context of the decision. Few experiments have jointly manipulated both partner characteristics and game structure, limiting

The present study adopted a dual-task paradigm manipulating operand presentation sequence (continuous vs. discontinuous) and a no-choice strategy adoption approach to investigate how stimulus presentation and response-related processes modulate strategy execution in dual-task scenarios. Participants completed a series of two-digit addition computational estimation tasks, in which they were required to use either the rounding-down (RD) strategy (e.g., calculating 50 + 80=130 for the problem 54 + 89) or the rounding-up (RU) strategy (e.g., calculating 60 + 90=150 for 54 + 89). These tasks were a

Cooperation, productivity, and cohesion in human societies depend on altruism, the tendency to share resources with others even though this is costly. While altruism is a widely shared social norm, people vary strongly in their inclination to behave altruistically, in particular across situations with different types of inequality in resource distribution. What neurobiological factors underlie this variability? And can these be targeted by interventions to enhance altruistic behavior? Here, we build on electroencephalography (EEG) evidence that altruistic choices during disadvantageous inequal

Background falls are a growing global public health concern that requires our attention and ongoing exploration. Observational studies suggest that changes in certain brain structures are associated with falls and risk factors influencing falls, yet the causal relationships between different brain structures and falls remain unclear. Methods using large publicly available genome-wide association studies of predominantly European ancestry, independent genetic variants associated with hippocampal volume, parietal lobe volume, cerebellum I-IV volume, brainstem volume, and cerebral white matter in

The real-time nature and outcome uncertainty of live sports viewing can shape viewer' emotional experiences through suspense, yet the neural mechanisms remain unclear. This study employed simultaneous fNIRS-EEG recording, combined with behavioral measures, to systematically examine suspense-driven emotional arousal and its neural basis during live versus replayed table tennis matches. Behaviorally, participants reported significantly stronger suspense, higher emotional arousal, and greater pleasure in the live condition compared to the replay condition. Neuroimaging results showed that live vi

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent affective disorder with limited treatment efficacy. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) represents a promising non-invasive intervention for MDD; however, optimal stimulation parameters and the neural mechanism underlying tACS require further investigation.
METHODS: The study used a randomized double-blind controlled design that included 72 outpatients with MDD, who were randomly divided into a low-administration (once daily) fixed (10 Hz) group, a low-administration (once daily) individual alpha frequency (IAF) group,

Movie-watching studies have shown that specific cortical areas are tuned to stimulus segments of certain durations. However, increases in stimulus duration naturally co-occur with increases in content complexity. This study aimed to disentangle the effects of stimulus content and duration to determine whether hierarchically nested, complex, naturalistic stimuli, like movies, are processed primarily on the basis of their underlying temporal or content structure. To this end, 48 participants watched six equal-length blocks of movie frames presented at a constant frame rate in an fMRI experiment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The identification of eloquent structures in the parietal lobe during awake craniotomy remains challenging, particularly for higher-order functions such as reading, calculation, and sensorimotor integration essential for writing and typing. Our study introduces a novel task as part of intraoperative neurocognitive monitoring (iNM) to enhance real-time assessment during tumor resection.
METHODS: We introduced a novel tactile symbol recognition task during iNM to assess sensorimotor function of patients undergoing awake craniotomy at a single-center from January to Fe

INTRODUCTION: Glioblastoma is an aggressive primary brain tumor that invariably recurs despite maximal resection and chemoradiotherapy. Understanding the spatial and directional dynamics of recurrence is crucial for informing treatment strategies, yet prior studies have relied mainly on qualitative classification schemes. METHODS: We conducted a quantitative analysis of glioblastoma recurrence patterns using a two-pronged approach: voxel-based lesion mapping and vector analysis. Lesion distribution shifts between initial and recurrent tumors were statistically evaluated using anatomical labeli

Accurate time estimation is essential for optimizing our perception and actions. Previous neuroimaging and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies have suggested that the right inferior parietal lobule (IPL) and supplementary motor area (SMA) are involved in time perception. However, it remains inconclusive whether the activity in these regions is crucial for time perception, partly due to the possible spread of TMS effects across anatomically connected brain regions. Such a remote effect is less likely to happen with transcranial static magnetic stimulation (tSMS), as the static magne

Non-invasive brain stimulation, such as transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS), has been shown to enhance cortical excitability and facilitate perceptual learning. However, the neural mechanisms underlying these effects remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that tRNS over the bilateral intraparietal sulcus (IPS) optimizes learning by preventing the decline in neural activity that occurs during short, high-load attentional training, thereby sustaining excitability and enhancing behavioral performance. Using a multi-session tRNS-fMRI paradigm, we investigated how tRNS modulates le

The basis of disorders of consciousness is the destruction of brain functional connectivity, and the restoration of damaged connectivity is considered as an indicator of consciousness recovery. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of parietal repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on the changes of brain functional connectivity and consciousness recovery in patients with minimal conscious state (MCS) by electrophysiological (EEG) functional connectivity analysis, and to further explore the potential mechanism of consciousness recovery. In this study, 24 patients with
