Functional changes of precuneus architecture across newborns, infants, and early adolescents.

Brain functional development from birth to adolescence follows the cortical gradient from primary sensorimotor to higher-order association regions. Precuneus (PCun) is crucial in spatial cognition, visual-motor integration, and social cognition. However, functional connectivity changes of PCun subregions in this dynamic developmental period are not known. Multimodal cross-sectional diffusion MRI and resting-state fMRI of subjects from birth to early adolescence were acquired to obtain structural and functional connectivity. PCun in neonates, 1-year-olds, 2-year-olds, and early adolescent subje

Dissociations within arithmetic rules: Different neural bases and solution processes in zero and one multiplications.

Zero and One single-digit multiplications (e.g., N × 0 = 0; N × 1 = N) are often excluded in studies of arithmetic because they are considered to be solved using a separate strategy, namely by referring to a rule. However, there is no clear evidence that these types of multiplications form a homogeneous group. In this study, we compare the behavioral and neural responses that operate when young adults solve Zero, One, and other single-digit multiplications (Facts). Twenty-one healthy participants completed an event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study while performing an

Multiplexed changes in synaptic transmission underlie stress-induced reduction of persistent firing in the parietal cortex.

Repeated exposure to stress disrupts cognitive processes, including attention and working memory. A key mechanism supporting these functions is the ability of neurons to sustain action potential firing, even after a stimulus is no longer present. How stress impacts this persistent neuronal activity is currently unknown. We found that repeated exposure to multiple concurrent stressors during adolescence (aRMS) impedes the ability of layer 5 pyramidal neurons (L5 PNs) in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) to produce persistent firing. To determine the mechanisms underlying this effect, we compl

Characteristics of Brain Metastases Identified by PET-CT Imaging in Patients with Lung Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could not be performed in all patients due to some contraindications. We aimed to demonstrate the characteristics of brain metastases that could be diagnosed with positron emission tomography - computed tomography (PET-CT) among patients with lung cancer. METHODS: Four hundred thirty nine patients diagnosed with lung cancer and brain metastasis between 2019 and 2023 were evaluated. A total of 642 brain metastasis lesions were identified, of which 286 were detectable on PET-CT. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression anal

Multimodal evidence for hippocampal engagement and modulation by functional connectivity-guided parietal TMS.

Hippocampal activity supports memory and many other brain functions. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) guided by hippocampal functional connectivity (FC) shows promise in improving memory, but direct neural evidence of its capacity to engage and modulate hippocampal activity is lacking. Here we combined TMS with intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) in 8 neurosurgical patients and with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 79 neurologically healthy participants. We identified that (1) single-pulse TMS to individualized parietal cortex guided by hippocampal-FC preferentiall

Transcranial alternating current stimulation of the posterior parietal cortex enhances episodic memory consolidation.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has been reported to improve episodic memory (EM) by entraining neural oscillations. However, the effects of tACS delivered over the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) immediately after learning remain unclear. We aimed to determine whether tACS over the PPC, administered immediately after learning, enhances EM retention. Thirty-six healthy adults were randomly assigned to the tACS or sham-control groups. On day 1, participants completed three sessions consisting of a word-learning task followed by a recognition test. Subsequently, 40 Hz tACS (1

Selective control of prefrontal neural timescales by parietal cortex.

The frontal eye field (FEF) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC) are key hubs of the dorsal attention network, yet how parietal inputs shape prefrontal circuit temporal dynamics and attentional computations remains largely unknown. We measured intrinsic timescales of FEF neurons in male rhesus macaques and examined their changes during PPC inactivation. We observed two distinct classes of FEF neurons based on their intrinsic timescales: short-timescale neurons (~25 ms) and long-timescale neurons (~100 ms). Short-timescale neurons showed stronger transient visual responses, suggesting a role in

Pediatric anti-NMDAR encephalitis: Neuroradiological presentation, cognitive outcome and volumetric MRI analysis.

Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis is the most frequent autoimmune encephalitis in children and may cause long-term sequelae. Although MRI plays a key role in diagnosis and follow-up, its correlation with cognitive outcome remains unclear. We retrospectively reviewed pediatric cases of anti-NMDAR encephalitis diagnosed from 2007 to 2024, including only antibody-positive patients with at least one MRI. Clinical data encompassed presenting symptoms, EEG, therapies, relapses, and the latest neuropsychological assessment. MRI scans were evaluated by three neuroradiologist

Anodal high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation reveals a specific role for posterior parietal cortex in interlimb generalization.

Motor adaptation involves recalibration of well-learned movements in response to sensory or mechanical perturbations. This is believed to rely on internal models-neural representations that predict motor command outcomes-enabling computation of sensory prediction errors. These models support learning generalization, ie application of newly learned movements to new situations, effectors, or state space regions not directly encountered during practice. Prior studies show that focal left posterior parietal cortex lesions impair visuomotor adaptation in both arms, implicating posterior parietal co

Parietal Alpha-Band Connectivity Tracks Listening Effort in Hearing-Aid Users Under Competing Speech and Noise.

This study examines how the signal-to-noise-interference ratio (SNIR) influences auditory performance and neural responses associated with listening effort (LE). A new dataset was collected from individuals with moderate hearing loss, all fitted with hearing aids (HAs). Participants listened to two competing audiobooks presented via front-facing loudspeakers, while 16-talker babble noise was delivered from background speakers. Six SNIR levels (5.47, - $$ - $$ 3.55, - $$ - $$ 2.13, - $$ - $$ 1.19, - $$ - $$ 0.64, and - $$ - $$ 0.27 dB) were tested. Participants were instructed to atte

Aligned representation of visual and tactile motion directions in hMT+/V5 and fronto-parietal regions.

Moving events on the skin can be perceived through vision and touch. How does the brain create a unified multisensory representation of motion directions initially acquired in different coordinate systems? Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we demonstrate that individually and functionally defined hMT+/V5 shows univariate preference for both visual and tactile motion and encodes motion directions across hand postures. Unlike somatosensory regions, information about tactile directions is enhanced in right hMT+/V5 when mapped using an external rather than a somatotopic frame of referen

Hierarchical Summary Statistics Encoding Across Primary Visual and Posterior Parietal Cortices.

Despite growing evidence that the visual system pools sensory data into a summary statistical representation, the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. We characterized the neural coding of summary statistics at the single-cell and population levels using calcium signals imaged in primary visual cortex (V1) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC) while head-fixed mice passively viewed or classified eight mean motion directions of randomly moving dots into two categories. A small portion of neurons in both areas showed global mean motion direction selectivity beyond what would be expected fr

Investigating the effects of continuous theta-burst stimulation over the posterior parietal cortex on holistic processing of composite faces: evidence from cognitive modeling.

Efficient interaction with complex visual environments depends on the balance between global and local processing, with a natural tendency to prioritize global information-a phenomenon known as the global advantage. This study investigates how non-invasive brain stimulation using continuous theta-burst stimulation (cTBS) over the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) affects this balance, with a focus on holistic face processing. We conducted a within-subject, crossover, sham-controlled experiment involving 36 participants who completed Navon and composite face tasks before and after cTBS stimulatio

Cortical alpha changes during visuospatial attention: a deep learning-enriched EEG analysis.

Covert visuospatial attention in anticipation of a stimulus is known to topographically modulate alpha-band (8 to 14 Hz) brain activity. However, the specific cortical regions involved remain unclear. Here, we conducted a whole-cortex analysis of alpha-band changes by examining source-level electroencephalographic (EEG) signals during a cued visuospatial attention task via a novel approach integrating conventional alpha power analysis with a deep learning technique based on an interpretable convolutional neural network (CNN). Conventional metrics contrasting alpha power between leftward and ri

Hippocampal-parietal directed connectivity mediates brain network reconfiguration between internal and external attention: An intracranial EEG study.

Attention is a cornerstone of cognitive function, and understanding its neural mechanisms is of great significance for both cognitive science and clinical applications. A critical aspect of this endeavor involves elucidating how the brain's network architecture shifts between internally- and externally-directed states. However, the distinct organizational principles of neural networks in these states, as well as the pivotal brain regions and connections that mediate such transitions, remain largely unclear. To investigate these network dynamics, this study analyzed stereo-electroencephalograph

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over premotor and parietal cortex improves upper limb proprioception.

Proprioception plays a critical role in motor control and is often impaired following orthopedic or neurological damage. Non-invasive brain stimulation methods, such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), could potentially be used to modulate proprioceptive processing and help recovery. Among cortical areas, the premotor cortex (PMC) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC) are key regions involved in proprioceptive processing. We investigated the effects of tDCS delivered with the anode positioned over the right PMC and PPC on active joint position sense (AJPS) in healthy adults. Forty

Sub-Anesthetic Ketamine Administration Decreases Deviance Detection Responses at the Cellular, Population- and Mesoscale Levels.

In the neocortex, neuronal processing of sensory events is significantly influenced by their predictability. A common example is the suppression of responses to repetitive stimuli in sensory cortices, a phenomenon known as habituation. Within a sensory information stream, whenever a novel stimulus deviates from expectations, enhanced brain responses are observed. Mismatch negativity (MMN), the electroencephalographic waveform reflecting rule violations, is a well-established biomarker for auditory deviant detection. MMN has been shown to depend on intact NMDA receptor signaling across species;
