OBJECTIVE: Lesions in or around the atrium pose a surgical challenge due to their deep location and proximity to eloquent cortical and subcortical structures. Hence, a handful of approaches have been proposed aiming to minimize parenchymal transgression while providing adequate surgical maneuverability and dexterity. To this end, the authors sought to evaluate, for the first time in the pertinent literature, the feasibility of the intraoccipital sulcus (IOS) as a natural corridor to access the atrium safely and effectively.
METHODS: Twenty formalin-fixed adult cerebral hemispheres treated wit

Postoperative intracranial cyst formation is a rare complication. We report a case of an air-containing cyst in the contralateral left occipital lobe parenchyma after ligation of a dural arteriovenous fistula of the right transverse sinus. We reviewed related literature and discussed the mechanisms of this rare complication. A 59-year-old man presented with a right transverse sinus dural arteriovenous fistula with cortical reflux discovered incidentally during a brain checkup. The patient underwent surgical ligation of the draining vein combined with spinal drainage for intraoperative brain re

Menopause is a critical transitional stage in women's lives, yet evidence on its impact on brain structure remains inconsistent, and large-sample neuroimaging studies are limited. Here, we applied whole-brain morphometry techniques to evaluate differences between pre- and post-menopausal women in terms of gray matter volume, cortical thickness and cortical gyrification. We processed and analyzed T1-weighted brain scans of 4098 women (1033 pre-menopausal; 3065 post-menopausal) from the UK Biobank. Post-menopausal women exhibited greater gray matter volume than pre-menopausal women primarily in

BACKGROUND: Atlanto-occipital (AO) joint instability and arthrosis are significant contributors to cervicogenic headaches and related disability. Injection and radiofrequency treatment of the AO joint are innovative approaches. However, the literature providing guidance on safe access to these joints remains sparse. The AO joint presents a high-risk target for interventions due to its proximity to the vertebral artery (VA), potentially compromising vascular supply to the cord, brainstem, cerebellum, and occipital lobe.
OBJECTIVES: We describe the technical details of a novel fluoroscopy-guide

High rates of comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) may stem from a shared neurobiological basis; however, research exploring this overlap remains limited. We examined whole-brain structural covariance (SC) across PTSD, AUD, comorbid PTSD & AUD, trauma-exposed controls, and trauma-naïve controls to identify shared and unique SC profiles. Structural brain scans were acquired from individuals across 14 sites (N = 1565), and cortical thickness estimates were extracted to compute SC. Group differences in SC between pairs of cortical regions were examined usin

Face recognition is essential for human social life, and two core face areas have been identified in the human brain: the fusiform face area (FFA) and occipital face area (OFA). Previous studies have explored the functional division of the FFA and OFA in holistic face processing, using variations of whole faces where holistic processing was disrupted. However, a main prediction of holistic face processing (i.e., nonlinear integration of parts into wholes) lacks direct evidence. Here, we tested this prediction in the FFA and OFA by comparing their responses to incomplete versus complete faces.

Scutiger boulengeri is an amphibian distributed in high-altitude mountainous environments on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and its surrounding regions. However, its mitochondrial genomic characteristics and phylogenetic position remain to be further investigated. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of S. boulengeri was sequenced and assembled and a preliminary analysis conducted. The results revealed that the mitochondrial genome of S. boulengeri is 49,991 bp in length and comprises 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, and an expanded non-coding region encompa

BACKGROUND: IVC hyperechoic structure detected by echocardiography is relatively uncommon and is usually associated with deep vein thrombosis and cancers. In most cases, the etiology can be clarified using computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, we encountered an IVC hyperechoic structure that was not confirmed by multimodality imaging in a patient with cardiac myxoma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old woman presented with sudden-onset left hemiplegia and right homonymous hemianopsia. On arrival, her left arm was cold to the touch. Contrast-enhanced CT demonstra

BackgroundAge-related impairments in cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) and gray matter volume (GMV) both contribute to cognitive decline, yet their regional interplay and joint impact on cognition remain unclear.ObjectiveTo investigate how CVR and GMV are coupled and interact regionally to influence cognition in normal aging.MethodsWe examined 181 healthy younger adults (18-34 years) and 120 older adults (60-89 years). CVR and GMV (% intracranial volume) in major brain lobes were quantified using resting-state multi-echo functional MRI and structural MRI, respectively. Age-related alterations w

INTRODUCTION: Patients with chronic migraine (CM) frequently demonstrate resistance to conventional medical therapies, likely attributable to the multifactorial pathophysiology underlying their pain. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has recently emerged as a promising non-invasive neuromodulation technique for migraine prophylaxis. In this study, we evaluate the efficacy of a tDCS protocol in treating CM patients, both with and without medication-overuse headache (MOH).
METHOD: Thirty patients diagnosed with chronic migraine (CM) underwent treatment with tDCS (2 mA, 20 min/sessi

When confronted with danger, humans display a range of defensive behaviors, such as freezing and active avoidance. Prior research has identified a distinct physiological response pattern to avoidable threats, characterized by heart rate bradycardia, reduced visual exploration, and suppressed visual alpha activity (8-13 Hz), all of which are associated with faster flight responses. While this pattern indicates an adaptive state of attentive immobility, it is largely unclear how this state influences the encoding of explicit threat-related memories. Clarifying these mechanisms seems important to

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM) emerged as a severe and often fatal complication, particularly among patients with diabetes mellitus. The increase in invasive fungal infections has been strongly linked to diabetes, COVID-19-related immune dysregulation, hyperglycaemia, and widespread corticosteroid use. This systematic review provides a descriptive synthesis of the relationship between COVID-19, mucormycosis, and diabetes, focusing on epidemiology, clinical features, management, and outcomes.
METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scop

BACKGROUND: Driving is a complex skill involving various cognitive activities. Previous research has explored differences in the brain structures related to the navigational abilities of drivers compared to non-drivers. However, it remains unclear whether changes occur in the structures associated with low-level sensory and higher-order cognitive abilities in drivers.
METHODS: Gray matter volume, assessed via voxel-based morphometry analysis of T1-weighted images, is considered a reliable indicator of structural changes in the brain. This study employs voxel-based morphological analysis to in

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral malaria (CM) is a leading cause of childhood mortality and neurologic morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia and a strong association between diffuse brain swelling and mortality has been well-established. Our goal was to characterize patterns of cortical edema on brain MRI in children with CM and determine their association with patient outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed admission brain MR images obtained from Malawian children with clinical CM admitted at a single center from 2013-2019. Two neuroradiologists assessed the pat

PURPOSE: Fresh vegetables are essential human dietary components but are increasingly implicated in foodborne infections caused by Escherichia coli. Contamination may occur during cultivation, irrigation, handling, and retail display, and the presence of pathogenic or antimicrobial-resistant E. coli poses significant public health risks. Despite widespread vegetable consumption in Ogun State, Nigeria, limited data exist on the resistance and virulence characteristics of E. coli in these foods. This study therefore assessed antimicrobial resistance profiles and virulence genes in E. coli isolat

Research in visual perception has shown that in sensory areas, neural responses to a pair of objects presented together can be approximated by the linear average of the responses of each object shown alone. In this study, we ask if such an averaging relationship is unique to perceptual representations or if it also applies to representations maintained in visual working memory (VWM). By examining fMRI response pattern averaging across two experiments in both male and female human participants, we found that after properly accounting for task factors such as load, an averaging relationship also

Mirror invariance is the cognitive tendency to perceive mirror-image objects as identical. Mirrored letters, however, are distinct orthographic units and must be identified as different despite having the same shape. Consistent with this phenomenon, a small, localized region in the ventral visual stream, the Visual Word Form Area (VWFA), exhibits repetition suppression to both identical and mirror pairs of objects but only to identical, not mirror, pairs of letters ( Pegado et al., 2011), a phenomenon named mirror invariance "breaking". The ability of congenitally blind individuals to "break"

Recent studies have demonstrated top-down modulation in perceptual cortices in infants as young as 6 months. However, it is unclear when and how this ability emerges given conflicting evidence available. This study investigates top-down perceptual modulation by focusing on a neural signature referred to as top-down sensory prediction, where the prediction of upcoming sensory information is exhibited in the modulation of activity in perceptual cortices. We extended a paradigm previously used to identify top-down sensory prediction in 6-month-old infants to neonates. Using functional near-infrar

BACKGROUND: Factor XIII (FXIII) deficiency is a rare coagulation disorder that can present in a variety of clinical pictures, including umbilical cord bleeding, poorly healed wounds, and intracranial hemorrhage (ICH). Most of the patients also have prolonged bleeding issues. Here, we present a case of recurrent ICH from the same site due to FXIII deficiency.
CASE REPORT: The patient is a 24-year-old man who presented with a thunderclap headache and homonymous hemianopia to the hospital. His medical history was only significant for a prior ICH a decade ago. Blood workups were within normal lim

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence indicates overlapping neurobiological variations across transdiagnostic psychiatric disorders. Considering depression and anxiety as the most common and co-occurring symptoms in affective disorders, we hypothesize shared symptom-related electrophysiological aberrations in the neural rhythmic oscillations across diagnostic boundaries.
METHODS: 53 treatment-naïve patients with major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, or depressive episode in bipolar disorder, and 83 healthy controls (HC), underwent 64-channel electroencephalographic (EEG) recording
