The effects of elevated CO2 on brain and ocular signal intensity with intravenous contrast MRI.

Up to 70% of astronauts develop spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS), a constellation of ocular structural changes, in microgravity; the mechanisms are unknown but have hypothesized to stem from elevated CO2, glymphatic dysfunction, and other processes. In this preliminary study, we examined whether brain and ocular tissue signal enhancement on MRI at delay following intravenous gadolinium differs when participants breathe elevated CO2 versus ambient air across two counterbalanced sessions. We scanned 12 participants at baseline using structural MRI and at 90 and 360 min followi

Transient cortical blindness following coronary angiography: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Transient cortical blindness is an extremely rare and reversible neurological complication following angiographic procedures and is thought to be related to transient dysfunction of the occipital cortex. We report a 62-year-old woman with hypertension who underwent coronary angiography using 40 mL of the iso-osmolar contrast medium iodixanol. No significant coronary stenosis was identified. Approximately 10 min after contrast medium injection, she developed rapidly progressive bilateral visual loss, which progressed to complete blindness, accompanied by dizziness but without other

[Research on the effect of transcranial direct current stimulation regulation of different targets on working memory based on electroencephalography].

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that can modulate cortical neuronal excitability through scalp electrodes, thereby potentially enhancing cognitive function. However, to date, no specific stimulation targets have been identified in studies on tDCS for improving cognitive function. Previous research has suggested that the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and parietal-occipital regions (PO) of the human brain may be potential therapeutic targets. Based on this, the present study aims to compare the mechanisms of how tDCS affect

Obstacle coding in scene-selective cortices.

Navigating through complex environments requires detecting navigational constraints that arise from the interaction between paths and scene elements-so-called obstacles. Yet, the neural representation of such path-object interactions within scenes remains largely unknown. Across three fMRI experiments, we examined whether scene-selective regions-particularly the occipital place area (OPA)-encode the alignment between a path and an object that determines obstacle presence and its navigational significance. In Experiment 1, multivoxel pattern classification revealed that the OPA distinguished sc

Visual Word Form Area demonstrates individual and task-agnostic consistency but inter-individual variability.

Ventral Occipital Temporal Cortex (VOTC) contains a mosaic of categorically-selective functional regions that respond to visual stimuli. Within left VOTC lies the Visual Word Form Area (VWFA) - a text-selective region that develops as individuals learn to read. While there is consistency in the general location of text-selective responses - within the posterior occipitotemporal sulcus (OTS) - there is substantial variability across individuals in the size and precise anatomical location. Moreover, debate continues regarding whether VWFA a) encodes the visual features of text, versus b) is driv

Functional and structural connectivity of thalamic subnuclei in major depressive disorder at 7 Tesla.

AIMS: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is widely considered to be a mood disorder characterized by altered connectivity. The thalamus plays an important role in MDD by connecting large areas of the brain. Here, we explored thalamic connectivity in MDD at the subnuclear level using ultra-high-field MRI. METHODS: We combined ultra-high-field functional and diffusion MRI at 7.0 Tesla to map the connectivity of thalamic subnuclei in MDD patients (n = 47) and healthy controls (n = 13). We segmented thalamic subnuclei and calculated the functional and structural connectivity of thalamic subnuclei an

ED90 of Remimazolam for Moderate Sedation in Children Undergoing Neurosurgery.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative sedation is critical to alleviate anxiety in children undergoing neurosurgery, but the role of remimazolam is still uncertain such as its unestablished dosing and safety. This study was aimed to determine the 90% effective dose (ED90) of remimazolam for moderate sedation in this pediatric population. METHODS: This dose-finding study enrolled children aged 3 months to 6 years scheduled for neurosurgery. The up-and-down method (k-in-a-row, k= 6) was employed to investigate the ED90 of remimazolam for moderate sedation. According to the k-in-a-row rule, one patient recei

Ultra-high field 31P functional magnetic resonance spectroscopy reveals NAD+ dynamics in brain energy metabolism during visual stimulation.

We investigated dynamic changes in nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) metabolism in the human occipital lobe using ultra-high field 31P functional magnetic resonance spectroscopy (fMRS) at 7 T. Twenty-five healthy volunteers (mean age 24 ± 4 years, 10 females) performed a visual task alternating between fixation and flashing checkerboard stimuli. 31P MRS spectra were acquired from a visual cortex voxel functionally localized by prior functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Linear mixed-effects modeling revealed a significant reduction in NAD+ concentrations during the first stimula

Posterior communicating artery variation is linked to compromised cerebral hemodynamics in middle-aged and older adults.

We investigate whether common circle of Willis (CoW) variants relate to cerebral blood flow (CBF) characteristics among aging adults. Vanderbilt Memory and Aging Project participants free of clinical stroke (n = 390, 71 ± 8 years, 55% male) completed magnetic resonance angiography to assess cerebral artery variants and pseudocontinuous arterial spin labeling to quantify resting CBF and spatial coefficient of variation (sCoV), a marker of perfusion heterogeneity or stability. Linear regression models related categorical variants to regional CBF and sCoV, adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity,

Human lateral occipital complex is invariant for position and size transformations at the single-neuron level.

Object recognition relies on neural invariance to changes in position and size, yet the underlying mechanisms in humans remain uncertain due to the challenges that accompany single-unit recordings in cortical areas. We conducted the first single-unit recordings investigating position and size invariance in the human lateral occipital complex (LO) using two microelectrode arrays implanted in distinct LO subregions of a single patient. Our findings reveal that LO neurons exhibit strong shape tuning. Receptive fields were smaller than previously reported in literature. Time-resolved correlational

High-resolution in utero SV2A PET imaging of the nonhuman primate brain using the NeuroEXPLORER.

The NeuroEXPLORER (NX), a next generation brain-dedicated PET scanner, has demonstrated improved spatial resolution and sensitivity compared with previous PET scanners. In this study, we performed synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A) PET, an in vivo marker of synaptic density, to evaluate the performance of the NX in both fetal and maternal brains of four pregnant rhesus macaques. Results were compared with the previously acquired PET images using miniEXPLORER and Biograph mCT for fetal and maternal brains (four pregnant monkeys per scanner). The NX demonstrated superior performance compare

Social media use and early adolescent brain structure: Findings from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study.

Many adolescents initiate social media use during early adolescence, but the associations of early social media use with neurodevelopment have not been extensively studied. We utilized neuroimaging data from the U.S. Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study to investigate the association of social media use (hours per day) or social media addiction (Social Media Addiction Questionnaire) with brain morphology in early adolescence. We analyzed data from 7,614 participants with high-quality structural MRI and complete covariate data at Year 2 (2018-2020, ages 10-13). In addition to pre

Altered frontal and occipital cortical microstructure in obsessive-compulsive disorder - a multisite mega-analysis.

Alterations in cortical morphology have consistently been reported in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the microstructural properties of the cortex in OCD, including intracortical myelination, remain far less explored. The contrast between signal intensity in gray and subjacent white matter from T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), i.e. the gray/white matter contrast (GWC), is linked to intracortical myelination and may offer novel insights into the cortical microstructure of OCD. Here, we compared multivariate patterns of GWC defined from an independent component analysi

Distinct Biotypes of Visual Perception in Major Depressive Disorder.

Previous studies showed abnormalities in both visual motion perception (VMP) and occipital cortex activity in subjects suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD). Can the psychophysical and/or neural markers of visual perception serve for clinical identification of MDD subgroups? To address this yet unresolved issue, we develope a novel analytical framework combining visual perceptual measurement with machine learning clustering to identify MDD subgroups. Within a cohort of 272 individuals with acute MDD, this approach reveals a VMP-positive (VMP-P) biotype characterized by impaired VMP. C
