Exploring brain lobe-specific insights in an explainable framework for EEG-based schizophrenia detection.

Schizophrenia (ScZ) is a growing global health concern that affects millions of people and puts severe pressure on healthcare systems. Early detection and accurate diagnosis are crucial for adequate management. Electroencephalography (EEG) has evolved into a promising non-invasive tool for detecting ScZ in contemporary research. However, specific biomarkers, especially those related to brain lobes, cannot often be identified by current EEG-based diagnostic methods. Different brain lobes are associated with distinct cognitive functions and patterns of diseases. Also, there is a gap in the incor

Causal relationships between alzheimer's disease genetics and brain connectivity alterations: a multi-modal mendelian randomization study with transcriptomic validation of 191 rs-fMRI and 635 DTI neuroimaging traits.

Traditional observational magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have revealed changes in brain connectivity in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, the findings have been inconsistent due to small sample sizes and potential confounding factors. The genetic effects of AD on the inherent brain activity and connectivity of patients are still not well understood. We utilized summary-level GWAS data for 223,906 Europeans from three large AD cohorts and comprehensive GWAS data for 191 rs-fMRI functional connectivity (FC) traits (n = 34,691) and 635 diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) metrics (n = 33,292

Giant parieto-occipital encephaloceles: always a dismal prognosis? A case report and review of the literature.

The presented case involves an infant with a prenatally diagnosed giant encephalocele including parts of the occipital and superior parietal lobes, as well as the superior cerebellum. Imaging revealed a complex encephalocele with absence or hypoplastic aspects of venous structures, including the vein of Galen and transverse and sigmoid sinus. Clinically, despite the anticipated poor prognosis, the patient remained stable after delivery, leading to a reassessment of the initial palliative care plan. Surgical reconstruction of the encephalocele was performed at 4 weeks of age. The most recent fo

The Ovine Brain as a Model for Human Neurodevelopment: Immunohistochemical Profiling of Brain Maturation Markers in Preterm Lambs.

Preterm birth is known to severely impact the neurological development of newborns with long-lasting complications and higher risks of neurological disorders. Sheep (Ovis aries) is well known as a pre-clinical model in therapeutic studies, such as extra-uterine support. The aim of our study was to investigate the relevance of the lamb as a pre-clinical model for preterm birth when cortical maturation of preterm and term lamb is addressed. Cesarean sections were performed on time-dated pregnant ewes to obtain 13 lambs at 100 days and 140 days of pregnancy each (corresponding to 24 and 36 weeks

Topological disruptions of metabolic brain networks in early-stage chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Although previous arterial spin labeling (ASL) studies have characterized cerebral perfusion alterations in chronic kidney disease (CKD), it remains unclear whether these changes reflect disrupted coordination of metabolic activity at the network level. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the topological alterations of individual-level metabolic brain networks in patients with early-stage CKD. METHODS: A total of 52 patients with early-stage CKD and 53 matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent ASL magnetic resonance imaging of the brain. Individual-level metabolic brain netwo

Assessment of Patterns of Infiltration and Relapse of Patients with Glioblastoma of the Occipital Lobe.

Background: Current target volume delineation protocols for glioblastoma utilise uniform or isotropic expansion around the surgical cavity and residual tumour, without considering specific sites at risk for infiltration. Tumours arising in different neuroanatomical sites may demonstrate distinct patterns of infiltration. This study aims to review the infiltration and progression sites for the occipital lobe glioblastoma to identify sites potentially at risk. Methods: Patients with occipital lobe glioblastoma managed according to the EORTC-NCIC protocol were identified through a prospective dat

Dengue-Associated Acute Necrotizing Encephalopathy: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Dengue virus infection is increasingly recognized as a cause of neurological complications, though severe parenchymal involvement such as acute necrotizing encephalitis remains exceptionally rare in adults. We report a 35-year-old woman presenting with fever, seizures, and altered consciousness. Laboratory tests confirmed dengue virus infection, while cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed normal protein and glucose, no pleocytosis, and positive dengue IgM. Brain MRI demonstrated bilateral thalamic hyperintensities with central hypointense cores, the characteristic "double-doughnut" sign, along

Anatomic Predilection of Isocitrate Dehydrogenase-Mutant Gliomas: A Multi-Institutional Spatial Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Interactions between cancer cells and their microenvironment are central to tumor formation. Regional microenvironmental variability in the brain may offer insights into essential factors in tumorigenesis. Surprisingly, a granular assessment of regional patterns of gliomagenesis has not been undertaken in the molecular era. The aim of this study was to quantitatively establish the anatomic distribution of the major molecular subtypes of adult diffuse glioma. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 204 isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH)-mutant and 200 IDH-wildtype gliomas.

Perceptual heterogeneity in developmental prosopagnosia: The role of the right OFA.

Individuals with lifelong face recognition impairment, developmental prosopagnosia (DP), provide a unique testbed for understanding the neural mechanisms of face recognition. Although the right occipital face area (OFA) and right fusiform face area (FFA) are critical for face processing, studies examining their functionality in DP have been inconclusive. Two barriers that have prevented the development of a neural theory of DP are behavioural heterogeneity and limited sample sizes. Using one of the largest samples of DPs collected to examine OFA/FFA function, we tested whether face selectivity

Objective neural face recognition neuromodulation within a single transcranial direct current stimulation session.

Due to considerable technical and methodological challenges, neuromodulatory effects of online and post-stimulation transcranial direct current electrical stimulation (tDCS) on human cognition remain unclear. Here we evaluated these effects of tDCS on a sensitive, objective and reliable neural marker of human face identity recognition. Eighteen participants took part in this combined tDCS-EEG study. Following a sham tDCS period during rapid periodic individuation of pictures of unfamiliar faces (Phase 1), tDCS was applied for 10 min during the same visual stimulation over the right occipito-te

Widespread hnRNP K Mislocalisation Suggests Differential Neuronal Vulnerability in the Neurodegenerative and Ageing Human Brain.

Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein K (hnRNP K) is a widely distributed RNA-binding protein in the human brain, playing a crucial role in post-transcriptional regulation, including mRNA metabolism and neuroplasticity. We have previously identified an increase in neuronal hnRNP K mislocalisation in cases of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) compared to controls, where loss of nuclear hnRNP K was linked to alternative splicing events. However, the broader distribution of hnRNP K mislocalisation across different brain regions, other diseases and its pathological significance remains un

Network-level disruption effects familiar face processing via cortical nodes connected to occipito-limbic and tempora-frontal networks.

Familiar face recognition, an integral part of everyday social interactions, depends on the integration of perceptual identity and affective signals, yet the neural dynamics supporting this process remain poorly understood. In this study, continuous theta-burst stimulation (cTBS) was combined with high-density EEG to investigate how targeted inhibition of the occipito-limbic and tempora-frontal networks affects the oscillatory dynamics associated with the recognition of familiar faces. In a within-subject, counterbalanced design, 15 healthy adults completed two sessions in which cTBS was appli
