Follistatin regulates tooth root furcation morphogenesis.

Follistatin (Fst), an extracellular inhibitor of the TGF-β signaling pathway, plays a critical role in tooth development, particularly in crown morphogenesis and enamel patterning. While molar root number is conserved within species and between upper and lower jaws, the molecular mechanisms governing root patterning remain largely unknown. To investigate the role of Fst in root formation, we analyzed K14-Cre-mediated Fst knockout mice. During embryonic and early postnatal stages, Fst was dynamically expressed in the dental epithelium including the lingual epithelium, and primary and secondary

NGRA in Cosmetic Safety: Moving From the Frameworks and Case Studies to Wide Adoption.

Hirudin is a specific thrombin inhibitor which acts independent of antithrombin III and is able to bind to fluid phase and clot bound thrombin. It has become available for clinical use by production with recombinant techniques just recently. Hirudin produces a relatively stable level of anticoagulation when compared with heparin. However, hirudin is not as effective as heparin in blocking thrombin generation, but is more effective than heparin in inhibiting thrombin activity. In patients with unstable angina, hirudin was more effective than heparin in preventing ischaemic events in the acute p

Clinical Outcomes and Prognostic Factors Following Surgery for Supratentorial Intraventricular Tumours: A 15-year Experience.

OBJECTIVES: Supratentorial intraventricular tumours (SIVTs) represent rare and surgically demanding subset of intracranial neoplasms, characterized by heterogeneous pathology, deep anatomical location, and significant perioperative risk. Due to their low prevalence, robust outcome-data and evidence-based surgical guidelines remain scarce. This study evaluated clinical characteristics, surgical outcomes, and predictors of adverse events in a large single-center cohort. METHOD: A retrospective study was conducted on patients operated for SIVTs between April 2010 - April 2025. The data was colle

Topographic patterns of intraventricular hemorrhage extension and their prognostic significance in intracerebral hemorrhage.

Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is commonly associated with intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), which is considered an independent predictor of mortality and poor functional outcomes. However, little is known about the prognostic value of blood volume in various regions of the ventricular system. We aimed to characterize the extent of IVH in different regions of the ventricular system in patients with ICH and to assess its association with the risk of mortality. We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of patients with ICH admitted to our institution between 2010 and 2022. We gat

Intraventricular metastasis: a systematic review of patient demographics, clinical characteristics, and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Intraventricular metastases (IVM) are rare occurrences of brain metastases that arise within the ventricles from primary tumors elsewhere in the body. While brain metastases are common, IVM account for only 1-2% of such cases and present unique treatment challenges due to their deep-seated location. This systematic review aims to comprehensively analyze patient demographics, clinical characteristics, treatment approaches, and outcomes for individuals diagnosed with IVM. METHODS: A systematic search of online journals was performed to identify and include studies regarding metastas

A 57-year-old male with diffuse astrocytoma in the lateral ventricle: case report.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse astrocytoma (DA) is the most common intraparenchymal brain tumor, primarily occurring in the frontal and temporal lobes. However, its occurrence in the lateral ventricles is rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of a 57-year-old male with DA in the lateral ventricle. The patient presented with a one-day history of headache, nausea, and vomiting. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a round, low-density lesion in the right lateral ventricle. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a T2-weighted/fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (T2/FLAIR) mismatch, low signal on diff

Pediatric Fourth Ventricular Atypical Meningioma With a Whorling-Sclerosing Pattern: A Report of a Rare Tumor.

Meningiomas are rare in the pediatric age group and also very rare in the fourth ventricle. We describe a report of an 11-year-old boy who presented with frequent involuntary movements and an imbalance while walking. His MRI scan showed a well-defined T2 and FLAIR hyperintense lesion in the fourth ventricle, suspected to be a medulloblastoma. Post-excision of the tumor, histology showed a brain invasive atypical meningioma with a peculiar whorling-sclerosing architecture. The tumor cells were positive for EMA, PR, SSTR2A and showed retained MTAP and H3k27me3 expression. The MKI67 index was 8%

Surgical outcomes and technical considerations in intraventricular tumors: a retrospective comparative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Intraventricular tumors are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms located within the ventricular system and adjacent eloquent neurovascular structures, making surgical management technically challenging. Multiple surgical corridors, including microsurgical and endoscopic approaches, are available; however, the relative impact of surgical approach versus extent of resection and preoperative functional status on outcomes remains incompletely defined. METHODOLOGY: We conducted a retrospective, single-center observational study of patients who underwent surgical management for intraventri

Tubular retractor approach for resection of a subependymal giant cell astrocytoma (SEGA) in tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC): a case report.

BACKGROUND: Subependymal giant cell astrocytoma (SEGA) is a rare pediatric tumor that most commonly occurs in the setting of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). The deep anatomical location of these lesions makes the selection of an appropriate neurosurgical approach critical. However, minimally invasive techniques have emerged as a safe and effective alternative for the surgical resection of tumors located in deep regions. OBSERVATIONS: A 7-year-old male with a history of TSC presented with a large intraventricular mass located in the frontal horn of the right lateral ventricle, associated wit

[Intraventricular Tumor Surgery in the Neuroendoscopic Era].

Neuroendoscopic surgery, which allows tumor removal through a narrow surgical corridor, has been increasingly applied to intraventricular tumors. Although this approach is often regarded as minimally invasive, the restricted operative field and proximity to critical deep brain structures necessitate precise surgical manipulation. Periventricular vein injury can result in serious postoperative neurological deficits, underscoring the importance of meticulous dissection and hemostasis. During tumor removal, preservation of venous drainage should be prioritized. Aggressive resection should be avoi

Ventricle Width and Cerebrospinal Fluid Diversion Rate after Open Fetal Spina Bifida Repair: A 4-Year Follow-Up.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to assess the postnatal cerebrospinal fluid diversion (CSFD) rates and associated prenatal risk factors (RFs) in patients with open fetal spina bifida (fSB) repair over a 4-year follow-up. METHODS: In 185 patients, CSFD rate was determined at 1 year and incremental risk (IR) for CSFD at 2 and 4 years. Characteristics of children without CSFD were compared to those with CSFD, and multiple regression analysis evaluated RF. RESULTS: Sixty-four children (35%) needed CSFD within the first year. These children had larger head circumference (HC) at scre

Carry-Over Factor of Zearalenone in the Roof of the Third Ventricle of the Brain and Selected Skeletal Muscles During Low-Dose Zearalenone Mycotoxicosis in Prepubertal Gilts.

The aim of this study was to determine whether exposure to low doses of zearalenone (ZEN) over a period of six weeks affects the values of the carry-over factor (COF) of ZEN in the roof of the third cerebral ventricle (RTCV) and in selected skeletal muscles (longissimus and quadriceps) in prepubertal gilts. The study was conducted on 60 clinically healthy prepubertal gilts with an initial body weight (BW) of 14.5 ± 2 kg. Gilts were randomly assigned to a control group (group C; n = 15) and three experimental groups (ZEN5, ZEN10, and ZEN15; n = 15 each). Groups ZEN5, ZEN10, and ZEN15 were admin

Lymphoma Related to the Ventricular System: A Rare Case Report and Systematic Review of Intraventricular Lymphomas.

Background: Intraventricular central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma is an atypical presentation of extranodal lymphoma, whether primary or secondary. The most commonly diagnosed subtype of lymphoma is diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). There is a documented relation of HIV, EBV and KSHV infections with lymphomagenesis. AIDS-related lymphomas (ARLs) are described as a defining illness of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). This study presents a novel case and systematic review of clinical, radiographic and histopathological features of intraventricular lymphomas. Methods: We repor

Intraventricular meningiomas show size-dependent increases in peak ASL-MRI perfusion reflecting vascular heterogeneity.

PURPOSE: The deep location and choroidal arterial supply of intraventricular meningiomas (IVMs) make preoperative vascular assessment critical for anticipating surgical complexity and hemorrhagic risk, especially in larger tumors. While arterial spin-labeling (ASL)-MRI reliably quantifies tumor blood flow in typical dural meningiomas, IVM perfusion features and heterogeneity relative to other intraventricular lesions remain poorly characterized. We hypothesized that ASL-derived perfusion metrics do not scale proportionally with increasing tumor size and that focal perfusion heterogeneity disti

Early postoperative complication profile and acute hypothalamic dysfunction grading after surgery for adult intraventricular craniopharyngiomas: a single-center retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Intraventricular craniopharyngiomas in adults are rare lesions, and their surgical treatment is associated with a risk of hypothalamic, cognitive, and seizure-related morbidity. Early postoperative complications in this subgroup remain insufficiently characterized. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the frequency and pattern of early postoperative complications in adults with intraventricular craniopharyngiomas, with particular focus on early postoperative MMSE change, new-onset seizures, and the severity of acute diencephalic syndrome (DS) according to an original four-stage grading scal

Stereotactic radiosurgery for residual rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor: a case report and literature review.

Rosette-forming glioneuronal tumors (RGNT) are rare and novel World Health Organization grade I neoplasms that typically arise in the fourth ventricle and progress slowly. Surgical resection is the standard treatment. However, owing to their adherence to critical structures, complete resection is often not possible. The role of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in the management of RGNT remains inconclusive. We present a case of tissue-confirmed RGNT successfully treated with SRS. A 24-year-old woman presented with diplopia and dysequilibrium and was subsequently diagnosed with a fourth ventricu

Third ventricle non-Hodgkin lymphoma: An unusual presentation of primary central nervous system lymphoma.

INTRODUCTION: Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a rare extra-nodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma that most commonly involves the cerebral parenchyma. Isolated intraventricular involvement is uncommon, and primary localisation to the third ventricle is exceedingly rare, posing significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges for clinicians. CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old immunocompetent man presented with progressive headache, vomiting, and cognitive decline. Neuroimaging revealed a well-defined, homogeneously enhancing lesion involving the foramen of Monro and the roof of the third ventr

Giant cystic intraventricular schwannoma with chronic haemorrhage in an adolescent: diagnostic pitfalls and targeted literature review.

BACKGROUND: Intraventricular schwannomas are exceptionally rare; fewer than fifty cases have been documented since 1957. We report an adolescent case with massive cystic degeneration and chronic intratumoural haemorrhage, and synthesise the current literature. METHODS: Clinical, radiological, operative, and histopathological data for a 16-year-old male were collected prospectively. A targeted literature review (1957-2025) was performed. To ensure diagnostic accuracy, imaging characteristics were analysed exclusively in cases with documented CT or MRI findings. RESULTS: A 16-year-old male pre

Surgical strategies and long-term survival for third ventricle chordoid gliomas: a systematic review and clinical algorithm.

Chordoid gliomas are rare World Health Organization Grade II neoplasms of the third ventricle. While Gross Total Resection (GTR) has traditionally been the primary surgical objective, the intimate adherence to the hypothalamus and optic apparatus of these tumors creates a therapeutic dilemma for balancing oncological control against the risk of severe neurological and endocrine morbidity. This study aims to guide optimal management by bridging the evidence gap with the largest systematic review to date, analyzing clinical characteristics, surgical outcomes, and survival data. A systematic revi

Intraventricular schwannoma presenting with memory impairment and full neurological recovery after surgical resection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Intraventricular schwannomas are exceptionally rare benign tumors, accounting for a minute fraction of intracranial schwannomas. Their occurrence within the lateral ventricle is particularly uncommon, and the clinical presentation is often nonspecific, posing significant diagnostic challenges. To date, only a limited number of cases have been reported worldwide. We present a rare case of a left lateral ventricular schwannoma manifesting predominantly as transient isolated memory impairment, an unusual presentation that broadens the recognized clinical spectrum of this entity.
