Metronidazole-Induced Encephalopathy (MIE).

Metronidazole is an antibiotic often used to treat bacterial infections in the vagina, skin, liver, stomach, joints, brain and spinal cord, heart, lungs, or bloodstream. It is an essential drug for treating anaerobic bacterial infections, microaerophilic bacterial infections, and protozoal infections. It is cytotoxic to many facultative anaerobic microorganisms. Metronidazole can be taken by most children and adults but might not be suitable for some people. It may produce different neurologic side effects like cerebellar dysfunction, peripheral neuropathy, vestibulotoxicity, visual impairment

Balo's concentric sclerosis a rare variant of multiple sclerosis in a Nigerian adult male: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Balo's concentric sclerosis (BCS) is a rare variant of multiple sclerosis (MS) that usually runs a benign course. Typically, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) shows concentric lamella of areas of demyelination alternating with normal zones of myelin preservation. Clinically, it may be mistaken for other intracranial space-occupying lesions, especially in our subregion, where neuroimaging facilities are scarce or not affordable. The authors report a rare case of BCS in a young Nigerian male diagnosed and managed in Enugu, Nigeria. This is possibly the first reported case in sub

Effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (t-DCS) of the Cerebellum on Pain Perception and Endogenous Pain Modulation: a Randomized, Monocentric, Double-Blind, Sham-Controlled Crossover Study.

Accumulating evidence demonstrates a role of the cerebellum in nociception. Some studies suggest that this is mediated via endogenous pain modulation. Here, we used t-DCS to test the effects of modulation of cerebellar function on nociception and endogenous pain modulation. Anodal, cathodal, and sham cerebellar t-DCS were investigated in a cross-over design in 21 healthy subjects. The nociceptive flexor (RIII) reflex, conditioning pain modulation (CPM), and offset analgesia (OA) paradigms were used to assess endogenous pain modulation. Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) and pain ratings we

Chiari 1 Malformation and Epilepsy in Children: A Missing Relationship.

Purpose: Once believed a result of pathophysiological correlations, the association between Chiari 1 malformation (CM1) and epilepsy has since been considered as a coincidence, due to missing etiologic or clinical matching points. At present, the problem is being newly debated because of the increasing number of CM1 diagnoses, often among children with seizures. No specific studies on this topic are available yet. The present study aimed at updating the information on this topic by reporting on a series of children specifically enrolled and retrospectively analyzed for this purpose. Methods: A

Sudden unilateral hearing loss and vertigo following isolated cerebellar hypoperfusion without infarction due to vertebral artery dissection.

BACKGROUND: The definition of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is broadly accepted as acute sensorineural hearing loss of more than 30 dB over at least three consecutive frequencies in a pure-tone audiogram (PTA). Acute audiovestibular loss is common with ischaemic stroke in the territory of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA). However, cases in which SSNHL and vertigo occur with hypoperfusion alone are very rare. We describe a patient who developed unilateral SSNHL and vertigo as initial symptoms caused by cerebellar hypoperfusion by vertebral artery (VA) dissection withou

Activation of brain lactate receptor GPR81 aggravates exercise-induced central fatigue.

Exercise-induced fatigue is a complex physiological phenomenon and is greatly influenced by central mechanisms in brain. As one of the most abundant circulating carbon metabolites, l-lactate in brain has been considered to be an important supplementary fuel during exercise; however, whether it plays a signaling role in fatigue remains largely obscure. In this study, our results initially revealed that brain l-lactate levels were increased after an exhaustive swimming session in several brain regions including motor cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum. Then, we examined the specific role of bra

Crossed Cerebellar Diaschisis in Thalamic Lymphoma on 18 F-FDG PET/CT.

IMPORTANCE: Receiving accommodations may require a person with physical disability (PWPD) to recognize and address disparate care when it occurs. OBJECTIVE: To explore whether PWPDs recognize disparate health care and how their experiences contribute to the development of strategies to access care. DESIGN: In this qualitative study, we used grounded theory methods to explore perceptions of PWPDs regarding access to health care. Ten PWPDs participated in three semistructured focus group interviews. The analysis used multiple phases of analysis and methods to ensure rigor. SETTING: Focus grou

Role of supplementary motor area in cervical dystonia and sensory tricks.

Sensory trick is a characteristic feature of cervical dystonia (CD), where a light touch on the area adjacent to the dystonia temporarily improves symptoms. Clinical benefit from sensory tricks can be observed before tactile contact is made or even by imagination. The supplementary motor area (SMA) may dynamically interact with the sensorimotor network and other brain regions during sensory tricks in patients with CD. In this study, we examined the functional connectivity of the SMA at rest and during sensory trick performance and imagination in CD patients compared to healthy controls using f

Fetal MRI prior to intrauterine surgery of open neural tube defects: What does the radiologist need to know.

The management of myelomeningocele study trial showed significant prognostic improvement in fetal repair before 26 weeks of gestation. Hence, surgery in utero represents the best treatment option for open-neural tube defects (NTDs). Fetal surgery of open-NTDs has specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, which can be adequately studied with fetal MRI. The main concern: the spine (spinal defects other than Myelomeningocele and Myeloschisis, the level of the lesion higher than T1 or lower than S1 and the degree of kyphosis ≥ 30°), the skull/brain (no cerebellum herniation and Chiari II malforma

Organization of serotonergic system in Sphaerotheca breviceps (Dicroglossidae) tadpole brain.

The monoaminergic neurotransmitter 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is known to be involved in several physiological, behavioural and neuroendocrine functions in vertebrates. In this study, we investigated the distribution of 5-HT neuronal system in the central nervous system (CNS) of Sphaerotheca breviceps tadpoles at metamorphic climax stage. In the telencephalon, there was no 5-HT-immunoreactive (5-HT-ir) perikarya, but conspicuous fibres were observed in the olfactory bulb, pallium, subpallium and amygdala complexes. The preoptic area showed dense 5-HT-ir somata and cerebrospinal fluid contactin

Cholecystokinin (CCK) and its receptors (CCK1R and CCK2R) in chickens: functional analysis and tissue expression.

Cholecystokinin (CCK) is widely distributed in the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system, regulating a range of physiological functions by activating its receptors (CCK1R and CCK2R). Compared to those in mammals, the CCK gene and its receptors have already been cloned in various birds, such as chickens. However, knowledge regarding their functionality and tissue expression is limited. In this study, we examined the expression of CCK and its 2 receptors in chicken tissues. In addition, the functionality of the 2 receptors was investigated. Using 3 cell-based luciferase reporter syst

A functional neuroimaging study of self-other processing alterations in atypical developmental trajectories of psychotic-like experiences.

Self-disturbances constitute a hallmark of psychosis, but it remains unclear whether these alterations are present in at-risk populations, and therefore their role in the development of psychosis has yet to be confirmed. The present study addressed this question by measuring neural correlates of self-other processing in youth belonging to three developmental trajectories of psychotic experiences. Eighty-six youths were recruited from a longitudinal cohort of over 3800 adolescents based on their trajectories of Psychotic-Like Experiences from 12 to 16 years of age. Participants underwent neuroi

A study on brain neuronal activation based on the load in upper limb exercise (STROBE).

This study aimed to determine the level of brain activation in separate regions, including the lobes, cerebellum, and limbic system, depending on the weight of an object during elbow flexion and extension exercise using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The study was conducted on ten male undergraduates (22.4 ± 1.2 years). The functional images of the brain were obtained using the 3T MRI. The participants performed upper limb flexion and extension exercise at a constant speed and as the weight of the object for lifting was varied (0 g and 1000 g). The experiment consisted of four b

Acute cerebral infarction of posterior circulation in a patient with vertebral artery fenestration deformity: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebrovascular fenestration malformation is a rare congenital vascular variation. Cerebrovascular fenestration malformation rarely directly leads to cerebral infarction, and the mechanism of cerebral infarction is not clear. Cases of young patients with vertebral artery fenestration malformation who suffered from acute cerebral infarction of posterior circulation are rare and have not been reported widely. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 36-year-old male patient, who had been in good health and without a family history of stroke, was admitted to our hospital with a 6-h history of dizziness

Brain microstructural abnormalities in patients with Wilson's disease: A systematic review of diffusion tenor imaging studies.

INTRODUCTION: Wilson's disease (WD) is an autosomal recessive that can lead to high copper concentrations and copper accumulation in bodily organs, specifically the liver, nervous system, and cornea of the eye. Previous meta-analysis studies have evaluated literature reports of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to characterize brain microstructural abnormalities in specific neurological diseases, but there have been no systematic reviews of DTI findings in Wilson's disease (WD). Therefore, this study aimed to systematically review studies reporting DTI findings in patients with WD. METHODS: This

Neural function underlying reward expectancy and attainment in adolescents with diverse psychiatric symptoms.

Reward dysfunction has been hypothesized to play a key role in the development of psychiatric conditions during adolescence. To help capture the complexity of reward function in youth, we used the Reward Flanker fMRI Task, which enabled us to examine neural activity during expectancy and attainment of both certain and uncertain rewards. Participants were 84 psychotropic-medication-free adolescents, including 67 with diverse psychiatric conditions and 17 healthy controls. Functional MRI used high-resolution acquisition and high-fidelity processing techniques modeled after the Human Connectome P

Functional connectivity and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations changes in people with complete subacute and chronic spinal cord injury.

After spinal cord injury (SCI), reorganization processes and changes in brain connectivity occur. Besides the sensorimotor cortex, the subcortical areas are strongly involved in motion and executive control. This exploratory study focusses on the cerebellum and vermis. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed. Between-group differences were computed using analysis of covariance and post-hoc tests for the seed-based connectivity measure with vermis and cerebellum as regions of interest. Twenty participants with complete SCI (five subacute SCI, 15 with chronic SCI

Brainstem white matter microstructure is associated with hyporesponsiveness and overall sensory features in autistic children.

BACKGROUND: Elevated or reduced responses to sensory stimuli, known as sensory features, are common in autistic individuals and often impact quality of life. Little is known about the neurobiological basis of sensory features in autistic children. However, the brainstem may offer critical insights as it has been associated with both basic sensory processing and core features of autism. METHODS: Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and parent-report of sensory features were acquired from 133 children (61 autistic children with and 72 non-autistic children, 6-11 years-old). Leveraging novel DWI pro
