Facial Nerve Palsy With Olfactory and Gustatory Dysfunction Following COVID-19 Infection: An Illustrative Case-Based Narrative Review.

COVID-19 infection has been recognized to induce a wide range of neurological manifestations, ranging in severity from transient, benign manifestations to severe neurological deficits. Cranial nerve involvement, particularly facial, olfactory, and gustatory nerve dysfunction, has emerged as a notable clinical feature in affected individuals. This review article aims to present and analyze three confirmed COVID-19 diagnoses that exhibited facial nerve palsy (FNP), olfactory disturbances (OD), and/or gustatory disturbances (GD), while also exploring the potential underlying pathophysiological me

Anterior Osteophytes at L3-L4 as a Primary Predictor of Adjacent Segment Degeneration After Lumbar Instrumented Fusion.

INTRODUCTION: Degenerative lumbar spine disorder (DLSD) is a significant public health concern, presenting with low back pain, radicular leg pain, and reduced quality of life. Although conservative management is the first-line treatment, some patients require surgery due to persistent symptoms or progressive neurological deficits. Lumbar instrumented fusion is a commonly performed procedure for DLSD. Adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) is a frequent complication after spinal fusion, occurring at either the cranial or caudal side of the fusion mass. While the role of spinopelvic parameters in A

Plasma membrane impacts of particulate matter on the blood-brain barrier.

The potential for inhaled environmental particulate matter (PM) to cause neuronal effects is a growing concern, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. There are two potential exposure routes via transport though the olfactory nerve transport and direct interaction of the circulating PM with the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This study investigated the plausible mechanism by which PM, once in circulation, could cross BBB's via the endotheliocytes, specifically focusing on the role of the plasma membrane. An in vitro BBB model (hCMEC/D3 cells) was exposed to ambient London PM (PM10, PM2.5) a

Frontolateral transfalcine approach to olfactory groove meningioma: rationale for surgical selection. Two-dimensional video.

Olfactory groove meningiomas represent a surgical challenge due to their intimate relationship with the anterior cranial fossa, olfactory tracts, and critical neurovascular structures. In this video, the authors present a microsurgical resection of an olfactory groove meningioma through a right frontolateral approach. This technique provides a wide operative corridor with minimal frontal lobe retraction, early devascularization of the tumor, and anatomical preservation of the contralateral olfactory tract. Stepwise dissection, relevant microsurgical anatomy, and surgical pearls are demonstrate

Incidentally Found Olfactory Schwannoma: A Rare Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Olfactory nerve schwannomas are sporadic, benign neurogenic tumors arising from Schwann cells within the olfactory pathway. Their clinical presentation is typically nonspecific, and diagnosis often requires careful radiologic and histopathologic evaluation. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 19-year-old male patient with an olfactory schwannoma that was incidentally discovered during evaluation for head trauma. The patient was asymptomatic, with preserved olfactory function. MANAGEMENT AND RESULTS: The patient underwent complete surgical excision via bifrontal craniotomy. Immunohis

A schwannoma of the olfactory nerve: a case report of a diagnostic challenge and review of the literature.

Olfactory groove schwannomas are exceptionally rare intracranial tumors that present a significant diagnostic challenge, as they are frequently misidentified as meningiomas on preoperative imaging. We report the case of a 44-year-old woman who presented with a two-month history of headache and blurred vision. Neuroimaging revealed a large, dural-based, homogeneously enhancing extra-axial mass in the left frontal region, strongly suggestive of a meningioma. The patient underwent surgical excision of the lesion. Histopathological examination, however, revealed the classic features of a benign sc

Generalization of fear learning is shaped by inhibitory sensory processing in mice.

When an organism learns that a sensory stimulus predicts a threat, the brain's neural representation of the stimulus somehow incorporates that information into early sensory processing. That altered sensory processing may causally shape the organism's response to the stimulus. We used contextual fear conditioning in mice to induce odor avoidance that generalized across odors in proportion to their similarity to the conditioning odor. Visualization of odor representations in vivo revealed they were being reshaped by reductions in GABAB receptor-mediated inhibitory signaling in the presynaptic t

Olfactory Groove Schwannoma: a rare case report.

Schwannomas are benign tumors arising from Schwann cells, which are present in all peripheral nerves. However, the olfactory nerve lacks typical Schwann cell ensheathment, making the development of true schwannomas in this region highly unlikely. We report a case of a young lactating woman who presented with recurrent epistaxis and was found to have a schwannoma in the olfactory region. Characteristic imaging findings are presented, and the tumor's origin is discussed.

Generalization and extinction of learned fear alter primary sensory input to the brain.

Neuroplasticity in sensory systems permits the brain to refine sensory discrimination between threat-predictive and neutral stimuli, but dysfunctional sensory plasticity might underlie maladaptive fear generalization. Using an odor-cued fear conditioning paradigm designed to induce broad fear generalization in a mouse model, we found that odor-evoked synaptic output from olfactory nerve into the brain's olfactory bulb was greatly increased not only for the original threat-predictive odor but also for novel odors that evoked generalized fear, even under anesthesia. Extinction training in which

Bilateral equalization of synaptic output in olfactory glomeruli of Xenopus tadpoles.

Odorants stimulate olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) to create a bilateral sensory map defined by a set of glomeruli present in the left and right olfactory bulbs. Using Xenopus tropicalis tadpoles, we challenged the notion that glomerular activation is exclusively determined ipsilaterally. Glomerular responses evoked by unilateral stimulation were potentiated following transection of the contralateral olfactory nerve. The gain of function was observed as early as 2 hr after injury and faded away with a time constant of 4 days. Potentiation was mediated by the presence of larger and faster calc

Elaboration of Cortical Pyramidal Dendrites Requires Dephosphorylation of Signal Regulatory Protein α by Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase δ.

Protein tyrosine phosphatase δ (PTPδ) is involved in Sema3A-induced dendritic elaboration of cortical pyramidal neurons through the activation of Fyn tyrosine kinase. However, the in vivo substrates of PTPδ remain largely unknown. Phosphotyrosine proteome analysis of Ptpδ -/- mice brains from both male and female revealed that signal regulatory protein α (SIRPα) was hyperphosphorylated at the carboxy-terminal Tyr501 residue in the knock-outs. Immunohistochemistry with anti-phospho-Tyr501 SIRPα antibody showed the hyperphosphorylation of SIRPα in various regions including the olfactory nerve la

Histomorphological Evaluation of the Protective Role of Vitamin D3 Against Cadmium-Induced Neurotoxicity in Albino Rats: An Experimental Study.

Background Cadmium (Cd) is one of the toxic metals found naturally in the environment and is used in industrial settings. In uncontaminated soils and freshwater, its levels are generally low. However, industrial activities, mining, phosphate fertilizers, and waste disposal can markedly increase environmental Cd concentrations, leading to chronic exposure in humans and animals. Exposure to high levels of Cd may induce harmful effects on nervous tissue. Experimental studies have demonstrated that Cd accumulates in various brain regions, including the olfactory bulb, after crossing the blood-brai

Preserving In Vivo Tissue Complexity in a Mice Olfactory Nervous System Model Using Whole-Mount Analysis for Studying Neural Regeneration.

In the era of three-dimensional (3D) imaging, standard immunohistochemistry has been recognized as highly limited in studies of pathology and complex human anatomy. By analyzing only narrow slices, larger structures and essential aspects of tissue architecture may lose critical contextual details, leading to incomplete or misleading interpretations. While two-dimensional (2D) sections have supported a basic understanding of histoarchitecture, they are insufficient for capturing the true three-dimensional reality of biological tissues. Increasing numbers of studies across multiple anatomical re

Effects of Mechanical Nasal Stimulation on Olfaction.

PURPOSE: Experimental studies have shown that the olfactory sensory receptor neurons not only identify odors and assess odor concentrations, but also act as respiratory mechanical sensors that respond to nasal airflow during breathing. Both odor detection and mechanical sensing appear mediated by a shared cellular mechanism. This prospective, single-arm, uncontrolled, pilot study was conducted to ascertain whether olfactory nerve mechanical stimulation provided by a nasal breathing oscillation device (Goodair Nosebuds) could influence olfaction when olfaction was assessed objectively. The stud

Combined Interhemispheric and Endoscopic Endonasal Resection of a Rare Olfactory Schwannoma with Preservation of Olfactory Function.

INTRODUCTION: Olfactory groove schwannomas (OGSs) are exceptionally rare intracranial tumors, with fewer than 80 cases reported. Their imaging features often mimic meningiomas or esthesioneuroblastomas, complicating preoperative diagnosis. Their origin remains debated due to the absence of Schwann cells in the olfactory nerve. RESEARCH QUESTION: To describe a rare case of olfactory groove schwannoma with ethmoidal extension, successfully treated through a combined interhemispheric and endoscopic endonasal approach, and to discuss its diagnostic and surgical implications in light of the curren

Airborne particulate matter and the lung-brain axis: unraveling the neuroinflammatory cascade from alveolar irritation to microglial activation.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological evidence increasingly substantiates a correlation between chronic exposure to airborne environmental pollutants—specifically fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) and diesel exhaust particles—and the prevalence of neurological disorders. While the respiratory consequences of these exposures are well-documented, the mechanisms by which pulmonary distress communicates pathogenic signals to the central nervous system remain complex and multifaceted. SCOPE & REVIEW: This review explores the "Lung-Brain Axis" as a critical conduit for neurotoxicity. We synthesize current findi

[Olfactory Nerve: The Vulnerability Inherent in its Unique System and Neurological Diseases].

The olfactory nerve possesses unique anatomical features, including direct central nervous system (CNS) projection and continuous regeneration. Scientific advances have elucidated mechanisms such as combinatorial receptor coding and signal amplification. This review summarizes these foundations and examines olfactory dysfunction in COVID-19 and Parkinson's disease (PD). In COVID-19, evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2 targets sustentacular cells rather than olfactory neurons, causing gene downregulation and parosmia attributed to incomplete peripheral filtering, while direct CNS invasion remains

A 3-N nose-to-brain urolithin a nanomotor targeting microglial mitophagy in neuroinflammation.

Cognitive impairment is the primary manifestation of neuroinflammation-related central nervous system diseases. Intranasal administration is an effective method, bypassing the blood-brain barrier and delivering drugs to the brain. Herein, we designed a biomimetic self-propelled nanomotor with an inflammation-targeting capacity. This nanomotor comprised a hollow mesoporous manganese dioxide (HMnO2) core and a polydopamine (PDA) shell. HMnO2 effectively catalyzed the conversion of endogenous H2O2 into H2O and O2, enabling the movement of the nanomotor into a wider area to reduce neuroinflammatio
