INTRODUCTION: The yearly incidence of Acute Demyelinating Syndromes (ADS) in a multiethnic cohort of children published by Langer-Gould and al in 2011 was estimated at about 1.66 per 100,000. Nevertheless, the real incidence for these disorders is still underestimated as the iterative revision for diagnosis criteria have failed to classify a significant number of children with ADS.
PURPOSE: This work was aimed to describe clinical and paraclinical characteristics of ADS in a pediatric population.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Demographic, clinical and paraclinical data of 42 children (24 females; 18

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, which mainly involves the optic nerve and spinal cord. Frequent relapse can accumulate the degree of disability. At present, the main treatment options are immunosuppressants and blood purification. The first-line immunosuppressants for NMOSD are mainly rituximab (RTX), mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) and azathioprine (AZA). Therefore, we designed this systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the safety and effect of the above three drugs in the treatment of NMOSD patients.

INTRODUCTION: Neuromyelitis optica is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system that predominantly affects the optic nerves and spinal cord. In neuromyelitis optica, white blood cells and antibodies primarily attack the optic nerves and the spinal cord, but may also attack the brain. Brainstem manifestation has been described recently. So far, neuromyelitis optica is very rare in Ethiopia and there were only two case reports, but this is the first case report of neuromyelitis optica with brainstem involvement.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old Addis Ababa woman presented to Saint P

The risk and potential consequences of mother-to-child transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) during pregnancy are still a matter of debate. We studied the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on 56 complete households, including 27 newborns whose mothers were pregnant when exposed to the virus. Two PCR-confirmed perinatal SARS-CoV-2 transmissions with mild symptoms in affected neonates were recorded. In addition, we observed a severe eye malformation (unilateral microphthalmia, optic nerve hypoplasia, and congenital retinopathy) associated with maternal SA

Herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) rarely manifests with complications of the optic nerve. The traditional standard of care for sight-threatening HZO infection involves intravenous hospital administration of the antiviral medication acyclovir. This case report entails an HZO complication invading the optic nerve, effectively treated by oral administration of the antiviral medication valacyclovir in an immunocompetent patient. Intravenous administration of antiviral medication may be undesirable for some patients with HZO due to comparative cost, stronger associations to nephrotoxicity, increased

A 62-year-old woman presented with non-specific abdominal pain, elevated alkaline phosphatase levels and bilateral sequential visual loss. Visual acuity was counting fingers in right eye (RE) and 20/400 in left eye (LE). She was noted to have optic nerve pallor in RE and mildly elevated optic disc with signs of ocular inflammation in LE. After 2 weeks, vision deteriorated to light perception bilaterally with now extensive vitreal inflammation present in both eyes. Positive rapid plasma reagen and Treponema pallidum's antibody tites confirmed syphilis infection. Unfortunately, as the diagnosis

BACKGROUND: Optic perineuritis (OPN) is a rare orbital inflammatory disorder that primarily involves the optic nerve sheath (ONS). This study aimed to describe the clinical features of idiopathic OPN as well as OPN secondary to other infectious and inflammatory conditions in a Canadian case series as current literature on secondary OPN in Western countries is mostly limited to case reports.
METHODS: Retrospective case series of all patients seen in a tertiary neuro-ophthalmology practice with a diagnosis of OPN from 2014 to 2020.
RESULTS: A total of 21 patients (14 women, mean age 55.8) corr

Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) is a very rare but sight-threatening complication of ocular syphilis. We reported the case of a 51-year-old woman who presented with a 2-week history of visual loss in the right eye (RE). Fundus examination demonstrated vitritis and the optic disc margin blurring. Fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) showed the presence of optic nerve edema, macular edema, and diffused impairment of the blood-retinal barrier with leakage areas, which led to the diagnosis of bilateral neuroretinitis. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the right macula evidenced irregulariti

BACKGROUND: Syphilis is an uncommon cause of optic nerve head edema; however, differentiating syphilis from other etiologies of optic nerve head swelling may be challenging. We describe 4 cases of ocular syphilis presenting with swollen optic nerve head(s) without overt signs of intraocular inflammation to better define the phenotypic presentation of this condition to allow its early recognition and treatment and discuss potential pathophysiological mechanisms of syphilitic optic neuropathy.
METHODS: Retrospective case series of patients presenting to a tertiary neuro-ophthalmology practice w

A Gram-positive anaerobic pathogen, Clostridium perfringens, causes clostridial myonecrosis or gas gangrene in humans by producing numerous extracellular toxins and enzymes that act in concert to degrade host tissues. C. perfringens possesses a homologue of the luxS gene that is reported to be responsible for the production of autoinducer 2 (AI-2), which participates in quorum sensing in bacteria. The luxS mutant was constructed using C. perfringens strain 13, and the role of the luxS gene in toxin production was examined. The cell-free culture supernatant from wild-type strain 13 greatly stim

Bartonella henselae, an intracellular gram-negative bacillus, is usually transmitted from infected cats to humans by direct or indirect contact. The bacterium mainly infects erythrocytes and endothelial cells thereby leading to so called cat-scratch disease (CSD) and may present with various localised and/or systemic manifestations. The eye is the most commonly affected organ in disseminated CSD and ocular bartonellosis has been reported in 5-10% of CSD patients. The most well-known clinical feature of ocular bartonellosis is neuroretinitis but various sight-threatening posterior segment lesio

We present the clinical case of a patient who developed a toxic optic neuropathy due to ethambutol in the context of a tuberculosis reactivation and who also had a personal history of multiple sclerosis. The objective is to highlight the importance of making a good differential diagnosis of this adverse effect and of knowing its main clinical, campimetric and tomographic manifestations and characteristics. Furthermore, since the reversibility of damage is still discussed in the literature, early diagnosis is essential. For this purpose, it is important to inform the patient of the possible sym
