Type -2 diabetes mellitus and auditory brainstem responses-a hospital based study.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus comprises a group of common metabolic disorders that share the phenotype of hyperglycemia. The metabolic dysregulation associated with DM causes secondary patho-physiological changes in multiple organ systems. The brainstem auditory electric responses represent a useful, non invasive and simple procedure to detect both acoustic nerve and CNS damage. MATERIAL #ENTITYSTARTX00026; METHODS: The study was carried out in the department of ENT, JNMC from 2008 -2010. The study included two groups, (i) diabetic group (n=25) (ii) Control group (n = 25). Diabetic group in

[Acoustic neuroma--vestibular schwannoma--personal experience of up-to-date management].

Acoustic neuroma, properly called vestibular schwannoma, arises from the Schwann cells of the vestibular transitional zone of the vestibulocochlear nerve as the most frequent tumour of the posterior fossa. Its incidence is estimated at 1.2 vestibular schwannoma per a population of 100,000/year. As to size, vestibular schwannoma is classified into grades I to IV. Its benign variety threatens the patient with hearing and balance impairment; uncontrolled growth can lead to death. About one third of small vestibular schwannoma show hardly any growth, the larger ones grow aggressively. The author's

Schwannoma of the tongue in a child.

A schwannoma or neurilemmoma is a benign, slow growing, usually solitary and encapsulated tumour originating from Schwann cells of the nerve sheath. Approximately 25-40% of all schwannomas are seen in the soft tissues of the head and neck, often originate from the acoustic nerve. Intraoral schwannomas are rare and account for 1% of schwannomas of the head and neck region. We report the case of a 10-year-old boy diagnosed with a schwannoma of the tongue. The purpose of this report is to emphasize the possibility of diagnosing schwannoma among all other lingual lesions in children. The disease i

Malignant acoustic schwannoma in a dog.

A malignant schwannoma of the right acoustic nerve of a dog is described. The neoplasm was found during necropsy of a 12-year-old, spayed, female Labrador Retriever that experienced a sudden onset of severe pain in the neck and upon opening the mouth. Concurrent mild hind limb ataxia also was present. The tumor had infiltrative growth, and the spindle-shaped neoplastic cells were arranged in sheets and concentric whorls. Immunohistochemical staining of the neoplastic spindle cells was positive for S-100 antigen, neuron-specific enolase, and glial fibrillary acidic protein.

Voltage-gated K+ channel (Kv) subunit expression of the guinea pig spiral ganglion cells studied in a newly developed cochlear free-floating preparation.

The spiral ganglion accommodates the cell bodies of the acoustic nerve fibres connecting the hair cells to the central nervous system. As the ionic channels containing various voltage-gated K+ channel (Kv) subunits play pivotal roles in determining the functional properties and firing behaviour of the spiral ganglion cells (SGCs), every piece of information concerning the Kv expression of the SGCs is valuable. In the present work a comprehensive immunohistochemical analysis was performed to describe the expression of 9 Kv subunits in the guinea pig cochlea on traditional wax-embedded sections

Simultaneous intracochlear stimulation based on channel interaction compensation: analysis and first results.

A simultaneous paradigm for electric stimulation of the acoustic nerve based on a monopolar electrode configuration and sign-correlated pulses is presented. Simultaneous pulse amplitudes are determined by taking into account parameters of spatial channel interaction. The computation of simultaneous amplitudes requires the solution of linear systems of equations in an iterative procedure. The computation amount can be reduced significantly, if the spatial impulse responses in individual electrodes can be approximated by two exponentially decaying branches with decay constants alpha toward apex

A large dumbbell glossopharyngeal schwannoma involving the vagus nerve: a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Schwannoma arising from the glossopharyngeal nerve is a rare intracranial tumor. Fewer than 40 cases have been reported. Accurate pre-operative diagnosis and optimal treatment are still difficult. CASE PRESENTATION: We present one case of schwannoma originating from the ninth cranial nerve with palsies of the trigeminal nerve, facial-acoustic nerve complex, and vagus nerve in addition to ninth nerve dysfunction. Magnetic resonance imaging showed tumors located in the cerebellopontine angle with extracranial extension via the jugular foramen, with evident enhancement on post-cont

Tinnitus modifications after cochlear implantation.

Tinnitus can be defined as a phantom sensation in the absence of an external sound. In our study, we evaluated the effect of cochlear implant on tinnitus evolution. Among adult, postlingually deaf patients who underwent cochlear implantation at our clinic, we selected 20 subjects with pre-implantation tinnitus (group A) and 10 subjects without pre-implantation tinnitus (group B). Pre- and post-surgery tinnitus was assessed through two questionnaires: the first one dealing with tinnitus characteristics and psychosocial impact, and the second one represented by THI, an internationally validated

Functional outcome of auditory implants in hearing loss.

The auditory implant provides a new mechanism for hearing when a hearing aid is not enough. It is the only medical technology able to functionally restore a human sense i.e. hearing. The auditory implant is very different from a hearing aid. Hearing aids amplify sound. Auditory implants compensate for damaged or non-working parts of the inner ear because they can directly stimulate the acoustic nerve. There are two principal types of auditory implant: the cochlear implant and the auditory brainstem implant. They have common basic characteristics, but different applications. A cochlear implant

[Cell Phones and Risk of brain and acoustic nerve tumours: the French INTERPHONE case-control study].

BACKGROUND: Use of cell phones has increased dramatically since 1992 when they were first introduced in France. Certain electromagnetic fields (at extremely low frequency) have been recognized as possibly carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Given the use of radiofrequency technology in cell phones, the rapid increase in the number of cell phones has generated concerns about the existence of a potential health hazard. To evaluate the relationship between the use of cell phones and the development of tumors of the head, a multicentric international study (INTERPHONE)
