Effects of natural products on skin inflammation caused by abnormal hormones secreted by the adrenal gland.

The cortex of adrenal gland produces glucocorticoid, mineralocorticoid, and androgen. The medulla of adrenal gland secrets catecholamines. These hormones play an important role in regulating blood pressure, metabolism, and homeostasis of glucose or electrolytes. Hypersecretion or hyposecretion by the adrenal gland will cause a complex cascade of hormone effects and lead to diseases, including Addison's disease, Cushing's syndrome, and congenital adrenal cortical hyperplasia. Skin is the largest organ of body. It provides protection and acts as a barrier against external damage factors like inf

Extensive Fever of Unknown Origin (FUO) Workup to Unmask Pheochromocytoma.

Pheochromocytoma is a tumor arising from chromaffin cells of the medulla of adrenal gland and secretes excessive amounts of catecholamines: epinephrine and norepinephrine. It can also arise from sympathetic ganglia when it is referred to as catecholamine-secreting paragangliomas or extra-adrenal pheochromocytoma. Pheochromocytoma has been referred to as "the masquerader" for its numerous atypical presentations, which makes its diagnosis medically challenging. Here, we present a case of a 66-year-old female, presenting with high-grade fever for two weeks associated with generalized body aches.

In situ localization of transketolase activity in epithelial cells of different rat tissues and subcellularly in liver parenchymal cells.

Metabolic mapping of enzyme activities (enzyme histochemistry) is an important tool to understand (patho)physiological functions of enzymes. A new enzyme histochemical method has been developed to detect transketolase activity in situ in various rat tissues and its ultrastructural localization in individual cells. In situ detection of transketolase is important because this multifunctional enzyme has been related with diseases such as cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and Wernicke-Korsakoff's syndrome. The proposed method is based on the tetrazolium salt method applied to unfixed cryostat

Distribution of a novel protein AgK114 expression in the normal tissues of adult mice: dual expression of AgK114 and growth hormone in anterior pituitary cells.

The novel antigen K114 (AgK114) has been previously identified in normal hamster skin, and its expression has been up-regulated accompanying tissue damages of the skin, although there is no information on its biological functions. To determine the physiological role of AgK114, we prepared anti-mouse AgK114 monoclonal antibody and studied its tissue distribution in healthy adult mice by immunocytochemistry. A widespread and unique expression of AgK114 peptide was found in the selected organs of various systems (hair follicle cells and sebaceous gland of skin, ciliated epithelial cells of trache

Distribution of neutral amino acid transporter ASCT 1 in the non-neuronal tissues of mice.

Distribution of ASCT1, a neutral amino acid transporter, in non-neuronal peripheral tissues of adult and developing mice was examined by immunohistochemistry and immunoelectron microscopy. Immunoreactivity for ASCT1 in the digestive system was localized in basal cells of stratified squamous epithelia from oral parietes to nonglandular region of the stomach, chief cells of the glandular stomach, acinar cells of the salivary gland and exocrine pancreas, and Paneth's cells of the small intestine, in all of which the basolateral membrane was selectively immuno-labeled. In the liver of adult mice,

Molecular characterization of rabbit scavenger receptor class B types I and II: portal to central vein gradient of expression in the liver.

To further elucidate the role of scavenger receptor class B type I (SR-BI) in reverse cholesterol transport and in atherogenesis, we performed studies in the rabbit, an animal model displaying a lipoprotein profile similar to that of human, expressing cholesteryl ester transfer protein in plasma and having been demonstrated to be susceptible to atherosclerosis. In this report, we describe for the first time the isolation and characterization of rabbit cDNA fragments encoding SR-BI and scavenger receptor class B type II (SR-BII). Development of an isoform-specific Taqman Real Time PCR system an

Characterization of a Na+-Ca2+ exchanger NCX1 isoform in bovine fasciculata cells of adrenal gland.

The Na+-Ca2+ exchanger (NCX) is well known to regulate intracellular Ca2+ concentration in many excitable cells. To date, three members of the NCX exchanger gene family have been identified: NCX1, NCX2 and NCX3. In zona fasciculata of the bovine adrenal gland, a Na+-Ca2+ exchanger has been recently found to display biochemical similarities with the NCX1 exchanger of renal basolateral cells. Although a Na+-Ca2+ exchanger has already been characterized in zona medulla of adrenal gland, such an exchanger has never been studied in the adrenal cortex. Thus, we have used a reverse transcriptase-poly

Immunohistochemical evaluation of endomannosidase distribution in rat tissues: evidence for cell type-specific expression.

Asparagine-linked oligosaccharides of glycoproteins are subject to a series of trimming reactions by glucosidases and mannosidases in the endoplasmic reticulum which result in the removal of all three glucose residues and several of the nine mannose residues. At present, endomannosidase represents the only processing enzyme which cleaves internally and provides an alternate deglucosylation pathway. However, in contrast to the endoplasmic reticulum residential proteins glucosidase I and II, endomannosidase is primarily situated in the Golgi apparatus of rat liver hepatocytes and hepatocyte cell

[The changes of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-containing nerve fibers in adrenal gland of burned rats].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes in calcitonin gene-related peptide(CGRP) within the adrenal glands medulla and cortex of the rat during early post burn period and the effect of CGRP on function of adrenal gland of burned rats. METHODS: The rats were randomly divided into two groups: control and burned. The distribution density of CGRP containing nerve fibers and cells in medulla of adrenal gland were determined at different timepoints post burn. RESULTS: 1. The CGRP-containing nerve fibers were distributed in capsule, cortex and medulla. CGRP-containing nerve fibers were associated wit

[The histochemical demonstration of a zinc activated, tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (author's transl)].

An acid phosphatase which is highly activated by zinc acetate is demonstrated histochemically in the medulla of adrenal gland of the rat. It is shown that the acid phosphatases demonstrable histochemically in the medulla of adrenal gland are strongly inhibited by sodium tartrate while acid phosphatase demonstrable histochemically in presence if zinc acetate is tratrate resistant.
