Epidemiological Investigation and Etiological Analysis of a Cutaneous Anthrax Epidemic Caused by Butchering Sick Cattle in Guizhou, China.

A suspected human cutaneous anthrax epidemic caused by butchering sick cattle occurred in Zhijin County of Guizhou Province, Southwest of China, in 2016. Epidemiological investigation and etiological analysis were performed to provide a scientific basis for the source tracking of the epidemic. The epidemic was epidemiologically investigated, and skin blister samples collected from patients and soil samples collected from the butchering spots were used for Bacillus anthracis isolation. The suspicious B. anthracis isolates were identified using conventional methods and PCR, followed by genotypin

Toxin-neutralizing antibodies elicited by naturally acquired cutaneous anthrax are elevated following severe disease and appear to target conformational epitopes.

Understanding immune responses to native antigens in response to natural infections can lead to improved approaches to vaccination. This study sought to characterize the humoral immune response to anthrax toxin components, capsule and spore antigens in individuals (n = 46) from the Kayseri and Malatya regions of Turkey who had recovered from mild or severe forms of cutaneous anthrax infection, compared to regional healthy controls (n = 20). IgG antibodies to each toxin component, the poly-γ-D-glutamic acid capsule, the Bacillus collagen-like protein of anthracis (BclA) spore antigen, and the s

Palpebral anthrax, a rare though important condition in villagers: A case report and literature review.

The aerobic Gram-positive rod Bacillus anthracis can cause potentially lethal diseases affecting different organs. Localized eyelid inflammation is a rare presentation of cutaneous anthrax. This case report involves two patients with palpebral anthrax admitted to the oculoplastic ward of Feiz Eye Hospital, Isfahan, Iran. The patients had a history of close contact with animals. Clinical presentation included palpebral swelling and necrosis of the eyelids in both cases. The patients first underwent an appropriate antibiotic regimen, and biopsy specimens were collected from their necrotic tissue

Control and Prevention of Anthrax, Texas, USA, 2019.

The zoonotic disease anthrax is endemic to most continents. It is a disease of herbivores that incidentally infects humans through contact with animals that are ill or have died from anthrax or through contact with Bacillus anthracis-contaminated byproducts. In the United States, human risk is primarily associated with handling carcasses of hoofstock that have died of anthrax; the primary risk for herbivores is ingestion of B. anthracis spores, which can persist in suitable alkaline soils in a corridor from Texas through Montana. The last known naturally occurring human case of cutaneous anthr

An ELISA using a recombinant chimera of protective antigen and lethal factor for serodiagnosis of cutaneous anthrax in India.

In this study, an ELISA was developed for simultaneous detection of antibodies against both the important toxins of B. anthracis i.e. protective antigen (PA) and lethal factor (LF). A chimera of PA and LF was made by fusion and cloned and expressed in E. coli. The purified recombinant protein was used in plate ELISA for serodiagnosis of anthrax. The chimera could detect antibodies against both the toxins of Bacillus anthracis. The human serum samples (n = 98) collected from anthrax endemic and non-endemic areas were tested employing ELISA. The ELISA gave sensitivity of 100% (95% Confidence Int

Development and Performance of a Checklist for Initial Triage After an Anthrax Mass Exposure Event.

BACKGROUND: Population exposure to Bacillus anthracis spores could cause mass casualties requiring complex medical care. Rapid identification of patients needing anthrax-specific therapies will improve patient outcomes and resource use. OBJECTIVE: To develop a checklist that rapidly distinguishes most anthrax from nonanthrax illnesses on the basis of clinical presentation and identifies patients requiring diagnostic testing after a population exposure. DESIGN: Comparison of published anthrax case reports from 1880 through 2013 that included patients seeking anthrax-related care at 2 epicente

Bacillus cereus-Attributable Primary Cutaneous Anthrax-Like Infection in Newborn Infants, India.

During March 13-June 23, 2018, anthrax-like cutaneous lesions attributed to the Bacillus cereus group of organisms developed in 12 newborns in India. We traced the source of infection to the healthcare kits used for newborn care. We used multilocus sequence typing to characterize the 19 selected strains from various sources in hospital settings, including the healthcare kits. This analysis revealed the existence of a genetically diverse population comprising mostly new sequence types. Phylogenetic analysis clustered most strains into the previously defined clade I, composed primarily of pathog

Unexpected human cases of cutaneous anthrax in Latium region, Italy, August 2017: integrated human-animal investigation of epidemiological, clinical, microbiological and ecological factors.

On 31 August, a veterinarian and a farmworker were hospitalised for skin lesions. Both had been exposed to a dead cow on 19 August on a farm near Rome, where eight further cattle died of confirmed anthrax later the same month. At admission, the first case showed a black depressed eschar and another smaller lesion on one hand. The second case presented deep infection of the skin, with involvement of both arms. Anthrax diagnosis was confirmed by detection of B. anthracis DNA in eschar fragments from both patients. T-cell specific immunity was studied by flow cytometry and Elispot assay after sti
