A craniopharyngioma in a Wistar rat most likely originated in a Rathke's cleft cyst.

We examined a 110-week-old RccHanTM: WIST Wistar male rat from a carcinogenicity study. No clinical signs were observed, and the rat was sacrificed at the end of the study. Macroscopically, within the midline of the sphenoid bone, was a 10 mm, non-infiltrative, soft, heterogeneous mass. Microscopic evaluation showed an expansile, cystic proliferation, consisting of two patterns of epithelial lining: well-differentiated areas lined by a single layer to a pseudostratified, ciliated-cuboidal epithelia with Goblet cells compatible with Rathke's cleft cyst; and poorly differentiated ones that forme

Craniopharyngioma.

Craniopharyngiomas are rare malformational tumours of low histological malignancy arising along the craniopharyngeal duct. The two histological subtypes, adamantinomatous craniopharyngioma (ACP) and papillary craniopharyngioma (PCP), differ in genesis and age distribution. ACPs are diagnosed with a bimodal peak of incidence (5-15 years and 45-60 years), whereas PCPs are restricted to adults mainly in the fifth and sixth decades of life. ACPs are driven by somatic mutations in CTNNB1 (encoding β-catenin) that affect β-catenin stability and are predominantly cystic in appearance. PCPs frequently

Histopathologic Findings in Canine Pituitary Glands.

To optimize the histologic evaluation of hypophysectomy specimens, sections of 207 canine pituitary glands (196 postmortem, 11 hypophysectomy specimens) were reviewed. Adenohypophyseal proliferation was the most common (n = 79) lesion. Proliferative lesions were sparsely to densely granulated; the granules were usually basophilic to chromophobic and periodic acid-Schiff-positive. Adenohypophyseal proliferation was classified as hyperplasia (n = 40) if ≤2 mm diameter with intact reticulin network, as microadenoma (n = 22) for 1-5 mm homogeneous nodules with lost reticulin network, or as macroad

Outcome of Surgical Resection of Craniopharyngioma:Single Center 12 Years' Experience.

Background Craniopharyngiomas (CPs) are rare epithelial tumors arising from the Rathke's pouch remnant located along the path of the craniopharyngeal duct accounting for 1.2-4% of all primary intracranial brain tumors, the primary treatment of which is surgery. Objective Whether radical surgical resection or partial resection followed by radiotherapy is a topic of debate. We presented our 12 years single center experience on surgical resection of craniopharyngioma. Method This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted among forty-five patients who underwent transcranial resection of cr

Recent advances in molecular pathology of craniopharyngioma.

Craniopharyngiomas are rare epithelial tumours arising along the path of the craniopharyngeal duct. Two major histological subtypes have been recognised, the papillary and the adamantinomatous. Craniopharyngiomas remain challenging tumours to manage and are associated with significant morbidities and mortality. Recent advances in the molecular pathology of these neoplasms have identified BRAF mutations in the papillary variant, offering promising options for targeted pharmacological treatment. The involvement of β-catenin and the Wnt pathway in the tumorigenesis of the adamantinomatous subtype

Primary ectopic frontotemporal craniopharyngioma.

INTRODUCTION: Primary ectopic craniopharyngiomas have only rarely been reported. Craniopharyngiomas involve usually the sellar and suprasellar region, but can be originated from cell remnants of the obliterated craniopharyngeal duct or metaplastic change of andenohypophyseal cells. We present the first case of a primary ectopic frontotemporal craniopharyngioma. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 35-year old woman presented with a one-year history of headache and diplopia. MRI showed a large frontotemporal cystic lesion. Tumor resection was performed with a keyhole endoscopic frontal lateral approach. Th

Craniopharyngeal duct: a cause of recurrent meningitis.

Identification of the cause of recurrent meningitis may pose a diagnostic challenge. Evaluation of a patient with recurrent meningitis calls for meticulous review of skull base structures by cross sectional imaging to exclude any underlying anatomical abnormality. Our case highlights the importance of excluding persistent craniopharyngeal duct, a rare but treatable cause of recurrent meningitis. The isolation of Streptococcus pneumoniae in recurrent meningitis may be a clue to the presence of a skull base abnormality. Craniopharyngeal canals have been classified depending on their qualitative

Management of craniopharyngiomas.

Craniopharyngiomas are rare epithelial tumours arising along the path of the craniopharyngeal duct. Their pathogenesis remains uncertain and they can present with a variety of manifestations attributed to pressure effects to surrounding structures. The optimal management of craniopharyngiomas remains challenging mainly due to their sharp, irregular borders and their tendency to adhere to vital neurovascular structures making surgical manipulations potentially hazardous to vital brain areas. Non-aggressive surgery followed by radiotherapy is currently the most widely used option possibly achiev

Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion in a cat with a putative Rathke's cleft cyst.

An 11-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was evaluated for anorexia, lethargy and weight loss of 6 days' duration. Bilateral mydriasis, absent menace response, slow-to-absent pupillary light reflexes, bilateral retinal detachment, intermittent horizontal nystagmus, intermittent ventral strabismus and systemic hypertension were present. Biochemical analysis revealed severe hyponatremia, severe hypochloremia and mild hypokalemia. Multifocal central nervous system disease was suspected based on optic, trigeminal sensory (ophthalmic branch), vestibulocochlear and possible oculomotor ner

Giant cranionasal and cystic-solid craniopharyngioma associated with extensive bone erosion and ossification.

Craniopharyngioma (CP), a rare benign and slow-growing epithelial tumor, is mainly located within the sellar/parasellar region. Primary CP involving the nasal cavity and the sellar region with extensive erosion of the skull base and ossification simultaneity has not been described previously. The authors report a 23-year-old man who presented to our institute with complaints of repeated nasal cavity bloodshed, liquid flow, and progressive visual loss. A neuroimaging examination showed a giant cranionasal and cystic-solid CP extending from the suprasellar region to the nasopharynx with inhomoge

Pituitary stalk craniopharyngioma.

Craniopharyngiomas are benign but aggressive neoplasms arising along the craniopharyngeal duct. It is frequently located in the suprasellar region. Primarily pituitary stalk craniopharyngioma is unusual and uncommonly early diagnosed, before it enlarges and extends to supra or parasselar region. This unusual location and the small size pose therapeutic dilemmas, since it has the ability to grow larger. Currently, no consensus exists regarding the optimal management. The authors have recommended complete resection.

Craniopharyngioma.

Craniopharyngiomas are rare epithelial tumors arising along the path of the craniopharyngeal duct; therefore, they occur in the sellar or suprasellar regions. These tumors commonly lead to neurologic, endocrinological, or visual symptoms. Radical surgery is the treatment of choice in craniopharyngiomas. The transnasal/transsphenoidal endoscopic approach offers the possibility of removing the tumor without retracting brain and optic pathways, with good results. The rate of cerebrospinal fluid fistula has improved due to the use of vascularized mucosal flaps for cranial base reconstruction.

[Craniopharyngioma--a "geographical malignant" tumour].

The craniopharyngioma is a rare dysontogenetic tumour that originates from either scattered cells of the craniopharyngeal duct or from metaplastically mutated anterior pituitary parenchyma cells. Despite being classified as a WHO-Class-I tumour, the histologically benign craniopharyngioma may display an aggressive behaviour. Like other congenital tumours, it usually becomes manifest within the first two decades of life. Patients typically complain of headache and a chiasma syndrome with bitemporal hemianopsy may develop depending on tumour localisation. In children, anterior pituitary insuffic

Brief communication: cognitive rehabilitation of executive functioning in a case of craniopharyngioma.

Craniopharyngiomas are rare brain tumors within the area of the craniopharyngeal duct. They are often diagnosed in children and young people and can be associated with significant cognitive impairments such as memory and executive problems. This single-case report describes a brief investigation into the effectiveness of goal management training for dysexecutive problems following the removal and treatment of a craniopharyngioma in a young woman. In contrast to previous laboratory-based studies, we exploited naturally occurring distractions within the patient's work environment as periodic ale

Ciliated craniopharyngioma--case report and pathological study.

BACKGROUND: Craniopharyngioma has two subtypes: adamantinomatous and squamous-papillary. Squamous-papillary craniopharyngioma may develop from remnants of the craniopharyngeal duct, anterior pituitary cells with squamous metaplasia, suprasellar epidermoid cyst, or Rathke cleft cyst. AIM: While ciliated craniopharyngioma is considered to represent a transitional stage between Rathke cleft cyst and squamous-papillary craniopharyngioma, ciliated craniopharyngioma following Rathke cleft cyst at the same site has not previously been described. RESULTS: We report a case of ciliated craniopharyngio

Bitemporal hemianopia arising from a suprasellar craniopharyngioma.

BACKGROUND: Craniopharyngiomas are uncommon intracranial tumors that arise from remnants of the embryonic craniopharyngeal duct. Although benign in nature, craniopharyngiomas can contribute to significant morbidity. When located near critical structures such as the optic chiasm, pituitary, and hypothalamus, craniopharyngiomas have the potential to cause severe visual, neurological, and endocrine deficits. CASE REPORT: A 61-year-old white man presented for an eye examination, complaining of acute peripheral visual field loss in his left eye. Automated threshold visual field testing found a bit

Acromegaly in a patient with normal pituitary gland and somatotropic adenoma located in the sphenoid sinus.

Ectopic acromegaly is a very rare clinical entity occurring in less than 1% of acromegalic patients. In most cases it is caused by GHRH or rarely GH-secreting neoplasms. Even rarer are ectopic pituitary adenomas located in the sphenoid sinus or nasopharynx that originate from pituitary remnants in the craniopharyngeal duct. This dissertation presents the difficulties in visualizing GH-secreting adenoma located in the sphenoid sinus. A 55-year-old man had somatic features of acromegaly for several years. MRI imaging revealed a slightly asymmetric pituitary gland (14 yen 4 mm) without focal lesi

Craniopharyngioma.

Craniopharyngiomas are benign slow growing tumours that are located within the sellar and para sellar region of the central nervous system. The point prevalence of this tumour is approximately 2/100,000. The onset of symptoms is normally insidious with most patients at diagnosis having neurological (headaches, visual disturbances) and endocrine (growth retardation, delayed puberty) dysfunctions. Craniopharyngiomas are thought to arise from epithelial remnants of the craniopharyngeal duct or Rathke's pouch (adamantinomatous type) or from metaplasia of squamous epithelial cell rests that are rem

The pathogenesis of craniopharyngiomas.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study is to review the pathogenesis of craniopharyngiomas. METHODS: A literature review of articles relating to the embryogenesis of the pituitary gland and sella and the pathogenesis of craniopharyngiomas was performed. CONCLUSIONS: Craniopharyngiomas are benign, epithelial neoplasms of the sella and parasellar region seen in children and adults that may arise from neoplastic transformation of ectoderm-derived epithelial cell remnants of Rathke's pouch and the craniopharyngeal duct.
