Reliability of Markerless 2D Video Analysis for Calculating Gait Joint Angles in Uncontrolled Environments.

Background: Traditional 3D gait analysis constrains natural movement variability due to artificial laboratory settings; thus, this study evaluated the intra- and inter-rater reliability of a low-cost, 2D markerless smartphone video protocol for assessing lower limb sagittal kinematics in an unconstrained environment. Methods: Forty-five healthy young adults walked at a self-selected speed in a non-laboratory corridor, where sagittal hip, knee, and ankle angles were recorded at 60 fps and analyzed using Kinovea® software by two independent raters, with one rater repeating measurements seven day

Optimizing Clinical Assessment of Knee Function: Biomechanical Adaptations Across Repeated Single-Leg Hop Trials.

Single-leg hop performance is widely used in clinics to assess knee function following anterior cruciate ligament injury. However, performance provides limited insight into joint-specific kinetic contributions, and the influence of repeated trials remains unclear. This study quantified the effects of hop directions (forward/vertical/backward) and repeated practice trials on performance and lower-limb joint kinetics. Forty-five injury-free participants performed 10 trials per task. Hop performance and peak moment/power/work at the hip/knee/ankle were calculated. Trials were grouped as one pract

Sit-to-Stand Power Across Adulthood in Three Latin American Countries: Sex-Specific Relative and Allometric Reference Values From a Multicenter Study.

Sit-to-stand (STS) power is a practical field-based indicator of lower-limb muscle power and functional performance across adulthood, yet reference values have been derived mainly from European cohorts, and allometric STS power remains scarcely described in Latin America. This multicenter cross-sectional study developed sex- and age-specific descriptive reference benchmarks for relative and allometric STS power in adults from Chile, Colombia, and Ecuador, and examined age- and country-related variation. A total of 1254 healthy adults aged 18-80 years performed a standardized five-repetition ST

The Impact of Age and Physical Assessment Measures on Performance Among Non-Weightbearing Walking Aids: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Walking aids for non-weightbearing (NWB) ambulation are often arbitrarily provided with no evidence that physical assessment predicts ambulatory performance. PURPOSE: We sought to determine if convenient physical assessment measures could guide NWB walking aid prescription and to determine how age impacts ambulatory performance. METHODS: This prospective randomized crossover study examined 22 healthy adults, recruited from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and surrounding area through flyers and word of mouth. Inclusion criteria were independent unrestricted community dwellers with no sel

Speed-driven transitions between discrete and rhythmic dynamics in walking revealed by kinematic smoothness and muscle synergies.

Humans control movement through motor primitives that generate discrete and rhythmic actions. We investigated whether and how speed may drive a transition between discrete and rhythmic organization in walking, and whether muscle synergy changes are associated with kinematic shifts. Eighteen healthy adults walked on a treadmill during incremental and decremental trials (0.5-5 km/h in 0.5 km/h steps). Kinematics and bilateral lower-limb EMG were recorded. Smoothness was quantified using log dimensionless jerk (LDJ) and spectral arc length (SPARC). Both metrics indicated lower smoothness at low s

Characterizing adaptation to using exoskeletons: A narrative review and assessment framework for occupational contexts.

Occupational exoskeletons are increasingly deployed to reduce physical demands and mitigate musculoskeletal disorder risk, yet successful implementation depends on how users adapt to these systems over time. This narrative review synthesizes evidence from 28 studies that examined user adaptation or familiarization to active and passive occupational exoskeletons across repeated or comparative exposure designs during occupationally relevant tasks. We characterize user adaptation as a multidimensional process, while using motor adaptation and related performance measures as the primary organizing

Annotation-Efficient Individual Muscle Segmentation from Dixon MRI: A Multi-Dataset Benchmark of Pretraining and Fat-Fraction Guidance.

Measuring individual muscles and their fatty infiltration on Dixon MRI can support sarcopenia assessment, but manual annotation is time-consuming and annotated datasets are often small. This study investigated accurate individual-muscle segmentation with limited labelled data. Three datasets were used: an abdominal CT dataset of 300 subjects with adipose-tissue labels, a lower-limb Dixon MRI dataset of 25 subjects with 13 thigh and 9 calf muscles, and an independent cohort of 66 subjects for external testing. Network architecture, encoder pretraining, a Dixon-derived fat-fraction input, and a

A mathematical model of knee joint line orientation: Independent effects of femoral and tibial coronal anatomy and limits on achieving a horizontal joint line.

PURPOSE: Natural knee joint line orientation (JLO) relative to the ground remains poorly understood. A JLO parallel to the floor is commonly assumed to favour balanced medial-lateral compartment loading, but the independent influence of femoral and tibial coronal anatomy on JLO during bipodal and single-limb stance has not been quantified. This study aimed to quantify the independent effects of the medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA) and lateral distal femoral angle (LDFA) on knee JLO relative to the ground during bipodal and single-limb stance using a mathematical model. METHODS: A two-dimen

Biomechanical responses to incremental backpack loading during stair ascent in male adolescents.

Backpack carriage is common among adolescents, yet its biomechanical responses during stair ascent remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of incremental backpack loads (0, 10, 15, and 20% body weight) on stair-ascent biomechanics in 16 male adolescents. Three-dimensional motion analysis, kinetics, surface electromyography, and dynamic stability measures were assessed using SPM1D. Increasing loads significantly altered AP-MOS, COM-COP inclination angle, vertical GRF, lower-limb joint mechanics, and muscle activation, while traditional spatiotemporal parameters remained unchanged. The influence of visual restriction and lower-limb proprioception on walking capacity in children with and without upper motor neuron lesions.

BACKGROUND: Gait stability depends on the integration of visual and proprioceptive feedback. Children with upper motor neuron (UMN) lesions often exhibit proprioceptive deficits; however, the interaction between these deficits and visual input during walking remains unclear. This study investigated the influence of visual restriction and lower-limb proprioceptive function on walking capacity in children with UMN lesions compared to typically developing (TD) peers. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 42 children with UMN lesions and 49 TD peers completed the 10-Meter Walk Test under normal
