Perception of Anatomical Nasal Variants Among Lay Observers: Clinical Insights from an Eye-Tracking Study.

BACKGROUND: Facial appearance influences social perception, with laypersons focusing on the central facial triangle; nasal differences may alter gaze patterns, but few studies have quantified this using eye-tracking. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate how layperson gaze patterns shift in response to different nasal variations as measured by eye-tracking. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, facial images with 30 nasal differences were created using Photoshop to represent a range of phenotypes, such as dorsal hump, crooked nose, and pinched tip, alongside controls. Gaze data were captured via eye-t

Influences of Cheek Support on Sucking Pressure During Bottle Feeding in Infants: A Pilot Study.

Effective sucking is important for shortening hospital stays in newborn infants. Several studies have demonstrated that oral support can improve sucking efficiency. However, the effects of oral support on sucking pressure have not been thoroughly investigated. In our previous study, we reported the equipment configuration and analysis method of sucking pressure. That method of measuring sucking pressure was applied to cheek support. In this study, four newborn infants with low birth weight, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, or multicystic encephalomalacia were enrolled. Their sucking pressures

Chromatin remodelling subunit SMARCB1 is implicated in dendrite development and complex brain functions.

SMARCB1 encodes a core component of the BAF chromatin remodelling complex and pathogenic variants in this gene are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders such as Coffin-Siris syndrome and intellectual disability with choroid plexus hyperplasia. The relationship between reduced or dysfunctional SMARCB1 protein products and severe functional brain changes associated with Coffin-Siris syndrome, including intellectual disability and severely delayed language and motor development, remains largely unknown. We performed cellular, molecular, and behavioural analyses of a Coffin-Siris syndrome m

Systematic review of facial deformation following paediatric head and neck radiation therapy: A call for standardised outcome assessment and dose-response evidence.

Radiation therapy (RT) is an essential treatment modality for paediatric head and neck (HN) cancer, but irradiation during craniofacial development can cause dentofacial side effects, including facial deformation (FD). This systematic review evaluates the evidence on FD post-RT, including assessment methods, prevalence, and dose-response. A literature search was conducted in PubMed and EMBASE. Studies were included if they reported FD > 2 years post-RT on average across the whole cohort in children treated for HN cancer aged 0-18 years. Studies were assessed using the Cochrane Childhood Cancer

Vestibular compensation: extended review.

Vestibular compensation (VC) represents a remarkable aspect of neuroplasticity, showcasing the brain's ability to adapt to disruptions in balance and spatial orientation caused by various vestibular disorders. This extended review provides a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms underlying VC, focusing on the distinct challenges posed by unilateral and bilateral vestibular disease. By examining the pathophysiological processes associated with these conditions, we gain critical insights into how the central nervous system employs adaptive strategies to restore functional balance. Rehabilitation using combined oral and maxillofacial prostheses: a case report.

This case report describes maxillofacial and palatal obturator rehabilitation after resection of head and neck cancer. A 71-year-old man sought prosthetic restoration of an extensive surgical defect that involved the right orbital floor, maxilla, and palate. The treatment plan involved fabrication of maxillofacial and palatal obturator prostheses that would be connected by magnets as well as a conventional total mandibular prosthesis. Intraoral and extraoral impressions were made with irreversible hydrocolloid, and stone casts were prepared. Test bases and wax rollers were made on the arch cas

A novel variant in ARID2 causes Coffin-Siris syndrome 6 with liver cirrhosis.

Coffin-Siris syndrome 6 is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder characterized by short stature, intellectual disability, and distinctive facial features. In this study, we reported a child with Coffin-Siris syndrome 6 accompanied with liver cirrhosis, which was caused by a novel nonsense variant c.4771C > T in the ARID2 gene. This variant leads to the premature generation of a stop codon. In vivo experiment has confirmed that this variant leads to downregulation of ARID2 protein expression. The potential association between liver phenotype and ARID2 gene variant in the patient requires f

Research on grape leaf disease recognition method based on improved YOLOv8n model.

Grape leaf disease recognition models face challenges such as large model sizes and a lack of classification for various disease types. This study proposes an enhanced grape leaf disease recognition model using an improved version of YOLOv8n, addressing these limitations. To improve performance, several modifications were made to the original YOLOv8n architecture. First, the G-bneck module was introduced into the backbone network to replace the ConvModule, enhancing feature extraction. Simultaneously, the simSPPF module was adopted to replace the SPPF, improving computation speed while preserv

Metabolic crosstalk between oral microbiota and the host in OSCC: emerging roles of microbial metabolites in tumor initiation and progression.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is an aggressive malignancy characterized by profound metabolic reprogramming and a persistently poor clinical outcome. Beyond genetic and environmental risk factors, growing evidence indicates that dysbiosis of the oral microbiome is associated with metabolic perturbations observed in OSCC and may contribute to tumor initiation and progression. Microbiome-derived metabolites represent a previously underappreciated layer of cancer metabolism, linking microbial activity to host metabolic states, epigenetic regulation, and immune dysfunction within the tumor m

Genebody specific epigenomic reprogramming of transcriptome promotes immune evasion in oropharyngeal cancer patients in North-Eastern India.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma of oropharynx (OPSCC), a head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) subtype, exhibits a remarkably high incidence rate in the North-Eastern regions of India. The development of OPSCC is associated with the exposure to smokeless tobacco with or without consumption of alcohol and smoking tobacco. Despite advanced treatment modalities, OPSCC patients still face a dismal prognosis, necessitating a deeper exploration of the underlying molecular characteristics of the disease. While promoter CpG methylation-driven gene expression alterations in OPSCC have been
