A novel nasal-to-oral airflow pressure ratio as an objective indicator of nasal obstruction.

OBJECTIVE: To introduce and clinically validate, for the first time, a novel nasal-to-oral airflow pressure ratio as an objective metric for assessing nasal obstruction. This ratio is designed to capture compensatory breathing patterns and to improve correlation with subjective symptoms compared with existing assessment methods. METHODS: A total of 108 patients with self-reported nasal obstruction and 26 healthy controls were enrolled. A custom-designed face mask equipped with pressure sensors recorded nasal airflow pressure during quiet breathing and oral airflow pressure during forced oral

InGesture: An eight-class inertial sensor dataset for fluid intake and hand-gesture recognition.

Recognizing fine-grained hand and arm gestures, especially those that occur naturally in daily activities, remains a challenge in wearable-based human activity recognition. This dataset supports fine-grained gesture recognition using wearable inertial sensors, with a focus on distinguishing subtle daily activities such as liquid ingestion and similar upper-body gestures. Fifty volunteers participated in controlled recording sessions, each performing predefined gestures including answering a phone call, scratching the head, adjusting glasses, passing the hand over the face, holding the chin, an

Prediction of baseline oral microbiota for clinical classification post Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Oral microbiota is related to the severity and recovery of SARS-CoV-2 infection. This study aims to predict clinical classification after SARS-CoV-2 infection using oral microbiota before infection. Herein, we collected tongue-coating samples before infection and then monitored clinical information after infection. Oral microbiota was detected by MiSeq sequencing. We randomly assigned participants from Zhengzhou into discovery and validation cohorts to develop a predictive model and conducted cross-region verification using Xinyang and Hangzhou cohorts. Sixteen asymptomatic patients (AP), 257

Revising the Extruding or Infected Alloplastic Implant.

Nasal implants are an integral part of both functional and cosmetic rhinoplasty. Alloplastic materials remain as a popular choice of nasal implant, especially in areas of the world where augmentation rhinoplasty is frequently performed. Many rhinoplasty surgeons and patients favor the use of alloplastic implants due to its advantages. Among the possible complications, extrusion and infection remain as the 2 of the most feared and dreaded complications in the use of alloplastic implants. In this review, we aim to highlight some of the unique challenges the revision rhinoplasty surgeon might fac

Salvaging the Compromised Soft-Tissue Envelope in Revision Rhinoplasty.

This article reviews evidence-based strategies for preserving and salvaging the nasal skin-soft tissue envelope (SSTE) in revision rhinoplasty, where prior surgical intervention often leaves diminished vascularity, scarring, and reduced tissue quality. Because SSTE integrity is pivotal to long-term functional and aesthetic success, the discussion addresses relevant anatomy, pathophysiologic mechanisms, and risk factors for compromise and presents an algorithmic approach to prevention, early recognition, and timely intervention.

The adult cleft lip and palate patient: beyond primary repair.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cleft lip and palate (CL/P) is the most common congenital craniofacial anomaly worldwide. While surgical techniques and multidisciplinary cleft care have advanced substantially, much of the literature focuses on pediatric outcomes. The long-term experiences of adults living with CL/P remain comparatively underexplored. This article aims to review the functional, psychological, and social experiences of adults with CL/P and consider how these factors influence long-term care. RECENT FINDINGS: Adults with CL/P face persistent functional challenges including speech difficultie

An evaluation of uncertainty quantification methods and measures for deep learning outcome prediction models in head and neck cancer radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Deep learning (DL) outcome prediction models show promise in radiotherapy but face limited clinical adoption due to concerns about prediction reliability. Although uncertainty quantification (UQ) can provide confidence estimates alongside predictions, there is currently little consensus on appropriate UQ approaches for DL-based outcome prediction. This study therefore evaluates and compares different UQ approaches for normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) and tumour control probability (TCP) models in head and neck cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four published

Bilateral Facial Artery Hypoplasia in the Face: Surgical and Aesthetic Implications.

While individual variations in the branching pattern of the facial artery have been reported, the simultaneous absence of multiple major branches is exceedingly rare. During routine cadaveric dissection of the superficial face, a unique combination of facial artery terminal branches was observed in an 85-year-old man. On the left side, the inferior labial artery and angular artery were absent. On the right side, the superior labial artery was absent. Additionally, the transverse facial artery was absent bilaterally. Consequently, the dorsal nasal artery and infraorbital arteries provided suppl

Hemostatic net in cervical and facial surgeries: evidence from a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Hematoma remains the most frequent complication of cervicofacial surgeries. The hemostatic net (HN), a transcutaneous suture designed to minimize dead space and bleeding, has shown promise, but pooled evidence of its safety and efficacy is limited. Thus, we conducted this study to clarify the safety profile and complication rates associated with the use of HN in cervical and facial surgeries. METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane, and Web of Science was performed through August 2025. Eligible studies involved adults undergoing cervical and/or facial surger

Multimodal imaging reveals resilient memory networks in carriers of pathogenic ARID1B variants.

The phenotypic spectrum associated with pathogenic ARID1B variants is remarkably broad, ranging from classic Coffin-Siris syndrome to non-syndromic intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorders. While speech delay, motor impairments and learning difficulties are well documented, brain imaging investigations remain scarce in this population. We combined multimodal neuroimaging and neuropsychological assessments in 12 patients carrying pathogenic ARID1B variants (age = 13.8 ± 4.7 years) and 34 age-matched healthy controls. Whole-brain voxel-wise analyses included arterial spin labelling
