Investigation of the Kinematic Upper-Limb Movement Assessment (KUMA): A Pilot Study.

Purpose: Upper limb movement disorders are common after stroke and can severely impact activities of daily living. Available clinical measures of these disorders are subjective and may lack the sensitivity needed to track a patient's progress and to compare different therapies. Kinematic analyses can provide clinicians with more objective measures for evaluating the effects of rehabilitation. We present a novel method to assess the quality of upper limb movement: the Kinematic Upper-limb Movement Assessment (KUMA). This assessment uses motion capture to provide three kinematic measures of uppe

Outcome Measures Used to Assess Hand Activity in Amputee and Intact Populations: a Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: The human hand is critical in assisting with activities of daily living (ADL). Amputation of the hand can affect a person physically, socially and psychologically. Knowledge of outcome measures used to assess upper limb activity of intact and amputee populations may aid in guiding research to develop applicable measurement tools specific to the amputee population. Tools could aid developments in prosthetic design and prescription, which benefit both users and healthcare researchers. OBJECTIVES: This literature review examined outcome measurement tools used with non-amputee and amp

An Anatomical Variation of Median Artery of Forearm and Palm: Cadaveric Study into its Origin and Course.

Background The median artery (transitory artery) represents the forearm's embryonic arterial axis. At 8th week of gestation retreats into a little canal that supplies the median nerve. Later, ulnar and radial arteries take its place. Adults may still have it in either a palmar or an antebrachial pattern. The persistent median arteries are a long, angular arterial that extends to the hand's palmar surface. The median artery only partially recedes in the antebrachial type. Objective To identify the median artery distribution in the adult Nepalese population. Method Twenty-five adult human cadave

Unexpected complication after reverse shoulder arthroplasty: Brachial artery pseudoaneurysm: A case report.

Pseudoaneurysm should be acknowledged as a possible but infrequent postoperative complication after shoulder arthroplasty which could be easily misdiagnosed. It is important that the upper-extremity surgeon suspects this problem in the follow-up assessment for appropriate management. In this paper, we present an unusual case of brachial artery pseudoaneurysm in the early postoperative period after reverse shoulder arthroplasty.

A new fractional fuzzy dispersion entropy and its application in muscle fatigue detection.

Recently, fuzzy dispersion entropy (DispEn) has attracted much attention as a new nonlinear dynamics method that combines the advantages of both DispEn and fuzzy entropy. However, it suffers from limitation of insensitivity to dynamic changes. To solve this limitation, we proposed fractional fuzzy dispersion entropy (FFDispEn) based on DispEn, a novel fuzzy membership function and fractional calculus. The fuzzy membership function was defined based on the Euclidean distance between the embedding vector and dispersion pattern. Simulated signals generated by the one-dimensional (1D) logistic map

Stabilizing effect of an elbow orthosis with an adjustable hinge axis after lateral collateral ligament injury: A biomechanical study.

BACKGROUND: Current commercial elbow braces have a straight hinge that does not account for the native carrying angle of the elbow. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a custom-designed hinged elbow orthosis (HEO) with variable valgus angulations in stabilizing a lateral collateral ligament (LCL) deficient elbow. METHODS: Eight cadaveric upper extremities were mounted in an elbow motion simulator in the abducted varus gravity-loaded position. The specimens were examined before and after simulated LCL injury and then with the addition of the custom-designed HEO wi

The Performance of Upper Limb (PUL) module in limb-girdle muscular dystrophy.

Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) is a genetic muscle disorder causing weakness and wasting of the proximal limb musculature. When ambulation is lost, the attention must be shifted to the upper limb muscles' function. We studied the upper limb muscle strength and the corresponding function in 15 LGMDR1/LGMD2A and 13 LGMDR2/LGMD2B, through the Performance of Upper Limb scale and the MRC score of upper limbs. The proximal item K and the distal items N and R were lower in LGMD2B/R2. The mean MRC score of all the muscles involved linearly correlated (r2 = 0.922) for item K in LGMD2B/R2. The fu

Lymphatic channel sheet of polydimethylsiloxane for preventing secondary lymphedema in the rat upper limb model.

Secondary lymphedema is a severe complication of cancer treatment, but there is no effective curative method yet. Lymph node dissection and radiation therapy for cancer treatment may lead to secondary lymphedema, which is a chronic disease induced by malfunction of lymphatic flow. The lymphatic channel sheet (LCS) is an artificial micro-fluidic structure that was fabricated with polydimethylsiloxane to maintain lymphatic flow and induce lymphangiogenesis. The structure has two-dimensional multichannels that increase the probability of lymphangiogenesis and allow for relatively easy application

[Moderate bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome improved by median nerve neurodynamic mobilization: a case report].

Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common neuropathy affecting the upper limb. Several therapeutic approaches are used to treat this syndrome, including conservative treatment, often used as the first line treatment. We here report the case of a 61-year-old female patient, presenting to the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology of the Specialty Hospital, Rabat, with moderate and bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome with sensory loss confirmed by electroneuromyography (ENMG). Manual therapy, including bilateral median nerve neurodynamic mobilization, was performed. Patient´s outcome was marked by
