Three-dimensional Motion Capture Discriminates Extremely Mild Cerebellar Ataxia from Parkinsonism in the Upper Limbs.

Upper-limb motor symptoms in spinocerebellar degeneration (SCD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) frequently overlap, making clinical differentiation challenging in mild cases using the finger-to-nose test (FNT) or the diadochokinesis test (DDKT). This study aimed to identify quantitative kinematic markers that distinguish mild SCD from mild PD using three-dimensional motion capture. Twenty-six individuals per group-mild SCD, mild PD, and normal controls (NCs)--underwent motion analysis during FNT forward, FNT backward, and DDKT. Key parameters including segmental velocity ratios during FNT and rot

Feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of AdaptRehab VR, an immersive virtual reality system for upper limb stroke rehabilitation: A mixed-methods study in Ethiopia.

UNLABELLED: Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability, with a disproportionate burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where upper limb impairment emerges as one of its most prevalent and debilitating consequences. Upper limb impairment significantly limits independence and community participation, and this makes rehabilitation a critical priority. While conventional therapy is essential, its effectiveness is often limited by challenges in patient engagement and adherence. To address these barriers, immersive virtual reality (imVR) offers a promising modality for enhancing

Grid to glide: A simple visual cue that alleviates upper-limb freezing.

Freezing of the upper limb (FoUL) is a poorly explored manifestation of Parkinson's disease. This report describes a case of a 54-year-old woman with FoUL predominantly affecting handwriting. Writing on grid paper with small squares (0.5 × 0.5 cm) markedly reduced FoUL frequency. A subsequent daily home-based writing and calligraphic training program led to sustained improvements in handwriting legibility, drawing ability, and transfer to writing on blank paper without the grid, without any change in medication. The immediate response to grid paper suggests that simple visual cueing-possibly b

Wearable Electromyography and Inertial Sensor Phenotypes Across Clinical Subtypes of Parkinson's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is clinically heterogeneous, yet whether the mild motor-predominant, intermediate, and diffuse malignant (MMP/IM/DM) subtypes show objective neuromuscular and kinematic phenotypic differences remains unclear. METHODS: We studied 120 patients with PD (55 men and 65 women) in the medication ON state. Subtypes were assigned using motor, cognitive, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, and autonomic domains. Synchronized surface electromyography and inertial recordings were obtained from the more affected upper limb during three tremor and three moveme

Primary Aortic Wall Myxoma Presenting With Recurrent Systemic Embolization: A Hybrid Surgical Management Strategy.

BACKGROUND: Primary aortic wall myxoma is exceptionally rare and may mimic mural thrombus or acute aortic dissection. CASE SUMMARY: A 38-year-old man presented after approximately 12 hours of acute left lower-limb ischemia with concomitant left upper-limb occlusion. Computed tomography angiography showed filling defects in the ascending and descending thoracic aorta. Recurrent embolization after peripheral thromboembolectomy prompted emergency ascending aortic exploration. A friable intramural myxoma was excised with ascending aortic graft replacement; the descending lesion was excluded by st

The Surgical Approach to Regional Anatomy (SATRA): Preserving hands-on pre-clerkship anatomy education through surgery-integrated dissection and specimen preparation.

Donor-based dissection in undergraduate medical education enhances clinical readiness and provides insight into surgical specialties. However, opportunities for surgically integrated dissection remain limited in pre-clerkship curricula. We developed the Surgical Approach to Regional Anatomy (SATRA), a resource-efficient surgical dissection program to provide learners with an integrated dissection experience while generating reusable teaching specimens for future anatomy education. This pilot study evaluated the feasibility and perceived educational value of SATRA. Thirty-three second-year medi

Staged Bilateral Total Elbow Arthroplasty in Advanced Rheumatoid Elbow Disease: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) remains a valuable surgical option for end-stage rheumatoid elbow disease, particularly in elderly, low-demand patients with painful joint destruction and functional loss. Bilateral elbow involvement can severely compromise self-care and independence, and staged bilateral TEA requires careful patient selection and realistic counseling. CASE REPORT: We report a 79-year-old female with long-standing rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, and glaucoma, with a relevant surgical history that included right total hip arthroplasty, bilateral total knee arthr

Potential role of vitamin B12 supplementation in neurological recovery after severe traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of mortality and long-term disability worldwide, with limited disease-modifying therapeutic options. Preclinical studies suggest a neurotrophic role for vitamin B12 in neuronal repair and functional recovery. In this setting, the metabolic, neurotrophic and nutritional properties of vitamin B12 may play a crucial role. CASE-PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 47-year-old male presenting with severe TBI following a road traffic accident, presenting with a severe TBI at admission and leading to diffuse axonal injury. Tactile regulation with pocket-sized robots: reducing movement and heart rate in children through hand-held interaction.

Periods of heightened arousal or restlessness can interfere with children's ability to remain physically calm in everyday settings such as classrooms. Handheld tactile technologies may offer a simple and engaging way to support brief moments of structured sensory-motor engagement. This paper investigates how a pocket-sized tactile device influences physiological and behavioral markers of calmness in typically developing children. Building on prior work examining heart-rate modulation, we present new findings on how a handheld rhythm-matching interaction affects full-body movement and postural

Use of a Medial Femoral Condyle Free Flap for Metacarpal Reconstruction of Type IIIC Congenital Thumb Hypoplasia.

This is a case report of a 14-year-old girl with a Blauth Type IIIc hypoplastic thumb who underwent metacarpal reconstruction with a medial femoral condyle flap to preserve a five-digit hand. At the patient's 9-month follow-up, imaging demonstrated complete bone healing at both the first metacarpal recipient site and the donor site. At 17 months after surgery, the patient is satisfied with the appearance and improved function as she now has a stable post with a small amount of thumb abduction and adduction, with minimal donor site morbidity. The patient has elected not to undergo the planned s

Average performance and performance variability on a brief functional fine motor test reflect distinct behavioral constructs in aging.

Prior work in older adults has developed a brief functional fine motor test, which involves repeated timed trials of an upper-limb task. Performance has been associated with global and domain-specific neuropsychological tests as well as putative markers of Alzheimer's disease when scored using variability in trial time; however, the extent to which task performance depends on motor ability has not been established nor quantified. This retrospective study examined whether mean trial time and trial time variability (measured as intrasubject standard deviation in trial time) were differentially a

Validation of Azure Kinect for upper limb kinematic assessment after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair: task-dependent accuracy and postoperative overestimation.

INTRODUCTION: Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair is the standard treatment for rotator cuff tears (RCTs), yet postoperative functional evaluation continues to rely heavily on subjective clinical scales, with limited objective kinematic assessment. This study evaluated the concurrent validity of an Azure Kinect-based markerless system against a reference inertial measurement unit (IMU) system for upper limb kinematic assessment in patients undergoing RCT repair, and explored its postoperative clinical utility. METHODS: Twelve patients with unilateral full-thickness RCTs were assessed preoperativ

Effect of tangeretin supplements on simulated precompetition weight loss in female combat sports athletes.

BACKGROUND: Weight reduction before competition has long been a major challenge for combat-sports athletes. Unscientific weight-loss practices not only increase the risk of hormonal imbalance, electrolyte disturbance, and impaired immune function but also compromise athletic capacities such as aerobic and anaerobic performance and explosive power. This study investigated the potential benefits of tangeretin, a natural citrus extract, on athletic performance. These benefits include the regulation of hormone secretion, the optimization of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, and the promotion of m

Temporal dynamics of alpha-band cortico-cortical coherence during motor preparation for successful and unsuccessful football penalty kicks.

INTRODUCTION: Successful motor performance may depend on the efficient coordination of cognitive and motor processes during movement preparation. Although previous electroencephalographic studies have linked alpha-band (8-13 Hz) coherence with performance in upper-limb precision tasks, little is known about cortico-cortical communication preceding successful lower-limb actions. METHODS: Sixteen skilled football players performed penalty kicks under an individualized task-difficulty condition. EEG coherence was calculated for eight electrode pairs connecting the left and right temporal regions
