Most immunologically-mediated diseases are inflammatory in nature, as assessed by cellular infiltrates at the lesion site. Recent immunohistological studies using monoclonal antibodies on tissue sections and synovial or cerebrospinal fluid reveal that B- and T-lymphocytes (predominantly T) participate in this reaction, together with monocytes and macrophages. The etiopathogenesis of inflammatory diseases of immunological origin can be discussed at two levels. (1) Lesions may be secondary to the cytopathic effect of antibodies, either by direct cytolysis or by opsonization, antigenic modulation

Microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs) that copurify with tubulin through multiple cycles of in vitro assembly have been implicated as regulatory factors and effectors in the in vivo activity of microtubules. As an approach to the analysis of the functions of these molecules, a collection of lymphocyte hybridoma monoclonal antibodies has been generated using MAPs from HeLa cell microtubule protein as antigen. Two of the hybridoma clones secrete IgGs that bind to distinct sites on what appears to be a 200,000-dalton polypeptide. Both immunoglobulin preparations stain interphase and mitotic appa

Some recent developments in the author's laboratory which rely upon the techniques of radioreceptor assays (RRA) for drugs and hormones are reviewed. These receptor studies have led, for example, to (a) the identification of 17-alpha estrogens that interact with the opiate receptor, (b) the delineation of a unique class of opiate receptor that mediates explosive motor behavior and is resistant to naloxone, (c) the discovery of progesterone derivatives and active tissue fractions that compete for specific binding sites for cardiac glycosides, (d) the observation that both the opiate and digital

Which subtype(s) of the alpha-adrenergic receptor occurs on human platelets? Studies of platelet responsiveness to adrenergic compounds and indirect radioligand binding studies addressing this question have yielded contradictory conclusions. These bindings studies employed the ligand [3H]dihydroergocryptine ( [3H]DHE), an alpha-adrenergic antagonist that does not select between alpha 1- and alpha 2-adrenergic receptors and that also binds to other receptor types in some tissues. To determine the subtype of the platelet alpha-adrenergic receptor, we have examined the binding to intact human pla

Cross-lymphatic metastasis from one breast to the other is the most frequent type of metastatic involvement of the breast. Melanoma, lung, ovary, and sarcoma are the most common types of blood-borne metastases to the breast from extramammary sites. The most common radiographic findings in patients with blood-borne metastases to the breast are single or multiple discrete nodules. Lymphoma or leukemia may involve the breast primarily but more often as part of a widespread process. Their presentation varies from discrete to ill-defined masses and may be obscured by underlying benign proliferative

The macrofauna of the soils on the west ridge of Gunung Mulu in 4th Division, Sarawak, were sampled during February and March 1978. The eleven sampling sites ranged from near the base of the mountain at 130 m a.s.1. to the summit at 2.376 m.Altitudinal changes from lowland rain forest (mixed dipterocarp forest) to lower montane and upper montane rain forests are concomitant with changes in soil from red yellow podzolics and regosols to peaty gley podzolics and organic peats. The abundance of the total macrofauna declined from 2,579 individuals m-2 at 130 m to 145 m-2 at 2,376 m. Declining popul

Animal models with genetic or experimentally produced (lesions of hypothalamus) obesities are numerous and unlikely to ever be reduced to a single pathophysiologic entity. However, obese animals have many similar traits in common. They are all hyperinsulinemic, an abnormality that occurs early in the development of these syndromes and appears to be of prime importance in producing most of the metabolic changes observed both in the early and late phases of the obesity syndromes. In all instances, obesity is an evolutional syndrome in which the early phase is different from the later one. The ea

In Araldite sections of male rat pituitaries, stained after embedding by the unlabeled antibody enzyme method with antisera to native luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) or LH-RH azo-conjugated to bovine serum albumin, localization is confined mainly to the interior of the large, and to a lesser extent to that of the small, secretion granules of the gonadotrophic cells. Plasma membranes are not demonstrated. Except for weak staining in the granules of corticotrophs, no other pituitary cell is stained. Pretreatment of sections with LH-RH (to dilutions of 4 pg/mul) increases staining i
