Histological, histochemical and ultrastructural studies were done on soft tissue surrounding alloarthroplastic joints. In 38 cases a prosthesis of the hip joint and in 2 cases of the knee had to be exchanged and replaced. In most of the cases the reoperation became necessary because the anchoring of the prosthetic parts in the bone loosened. A case of malignant chondroid syringoma occurring in a 52-year-old female is reported. The tumour presented as a large, cystic lesion of the thigh. Local recurrence and secondary deposits in the inguinal region occurred at an early stage. The rarity of these malignant tumours and metastasising sweat gland tumours in general is emphasised.

Twenty-six consecutive patients with melanoma of the lower extremities metastatic to the superficial inguinal lymph nodes were subjected to laparotomy. No patient had preoperative evidence of tumor dissemination past the superficial inguinal nodes. Since the route of administration of BCG may have an important function in immunotherapy, we investigated intralymphatic administration to direct BCG to the lymph nodes. Multiple injections of high doses of BCG were administered to 6 rhesus monkeys via the dorsal lymphatics of the lower limb. A suppurative lymphadenitis was observed along the lower limb and in the inguinal area in 5 of the 6 monkeys.
