The influence of 0.535% phenacetin in the diet or mechanical perforation of the renal pelvis and urinary bladder of male Sprague-Dawley rats in FANFT-induced urinary tract carcinogenesis was studied. The 151 rats were divided into 5 experimental and one control group. The rats were followed for up to 80 weeks. FANFT administered at 0.2% in the diet for 11 weeks resulted in a high incidence of urinary tract tumors particularly of the renal pelvis. Twenty-four observations of primary malignant tumors of the renal pelvis and ureter derived from epithelial cells were included in this study. Sixty-eight patients with transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis were studied with respect to clinical presentation, tumor grade, stage and location, subsequent development of other urothelial tumors, and patient survival. Autopsy reports on urothelial tumors of the renal pelvis and ureter in 602 cases were analyzed to investigate the mode of metastasis. Seventy one cases, or 12%, showed no metastasis. Preoperative staging of transitional-cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract is important for identification of those tumors amenable to limited resection. Twenty-two patients were examined using computed tomography (CT), and three patterns were noted: (a) a focal intraluminal mass, (b) ureteral wall thickening with luminal narrowing, and (c) an infiltrating mass. 4 cases of metastases in the oral cavity are described. They were seen in patients with carcinoma of the renal pelvis, renal carcinoma, breast carcinoma and malignant melanoma. In 3 of the cases, the metastases were situated distally to the canines in the mandible, where Roentgen examination had revealed a radiolucent area, and in the 4th case, in the soft tissue in the upper jaw. The initial symptoms in all 4 cases were swelling, pain or decreased sensitivity. The metastases were diagnosed, on average, 7 years after diagnosis of the primary tumour.

From 1965 to 1981, 9 out of 346 patients treated by chronic hemodialysis or kidney transplants had tumours of the lower urinary tract. In 10 years the authors have observed 16 cases of upper urinary tract tumors, appearing from 2 to 16 years after the initial diagnosis of bladder carcinoma. Such lesions are more frequent than has been suggested in the literature and represent 25% of all tumors of the renal pelvis and ureter seen in our service during this period. The material includes 15 suprarenal and five other retroperitoneal neuroblastomas.
