Classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) is frequently related to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. Its malignant capacity is attributed to disruption of an EBV-host balance influenced by environmental and genetic drivers. EBV structures activate Type I interferon (IFN) pathway of the innate immunity, therefore, genetic polymorphisms could influence this response. We explored the impact of four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on EBV-associated cHL susceptibility. Toll-like receptors 9 (TLR9_rs5743836), and 3 (TLR3_rs3775291), Interleukin-28B (IL28B_rs12979860), and DEAD-box polypeptide 58 (DD

BACKGROUND: Grade 2 nodular sclerosis classical Hodgkin lymphoma (NSCHL) is less common than grade 1 lymphoma and has a worse overall prognosis. To the best of the authors' knowledge, no study of a large series of cases has been performed until now. The objective of this study was to assess the diagnostic efficacy of cytology for grade 2 NSCHL versus grade 1 NSCHL and study the morphological features of grade 2 NSCHL in fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC).
METHODS: Fifteen of 51 histopathology-proven cases of NSCHL (18 FNAC procedures) were grade 2, and 36 were grade 1. The efficacy of FNA

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinicopathological features and outcomes of lymphoma in pregnancy.
METHODS: A total of 21 patients with lymphoma in pregnancy were diagnosed and treated at our hospital between January 1999 and January 2012. The clinicopathological data were analyzed retrospectively.
RESULTS: There were 11 cases of Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) and 10 cases of nodular sclerosis classical Hodgkin's lymphoma (NSCHL). And, among 10 cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL), there were diffuse large B cell lymphoma (n = 6),B-cell lymphoma, non-classifiable with features intermediate between di

BACKGROUND: The association of systemic mastocytosis (SM) with a non-mast cell haematological neoplasm represents a specific subtype of mastocytosis termed systemic mastocytosis with associated haematological non-mast cell disease (SM-AHNMD). The overwhelming majority of the associated neoplasms are of myeloid origin, while lymphoid neoplasms associated with SM have been reported rarely. Association of SM with Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) is exceedingly rare; so far, only two cases of HL as associated hematological non-mast cell disease in systemic mastocytosis have been published in the recent Eng

A case of Hodgkin lymphoma located in the rectum of a patient with ulcerative colitis is described. The patient was a 44 year old male treated with thiopurines for ulcerative colitis for ten years. He was admitted with malaise, weight loss and abdominal pain. Endoscopy revealed a large ulcerative lesion involving the rectum and distal part of the sigmoid colon. Although it macroscopically resembled a rectal cancer, repeated biopsies did not reveal any malignancy. In order to resolve the symptoms of stenosis and to get the final diagnosis a recto-sigmoid resection was performed. Pathologic exam

OBJECTIVES: The Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/American College of Rheumatology Damage Index (SDI) captures organ damage (OD) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, SDI is not always documented in the clinic or medical claims data. This non-interventional retrospective cohort study (GSK Study 209523) used a claims-based algorithm to estimate annual damage scores and associated economic burden in patients with SLE in Germany.
METHODS: Patients were identified from the Betriebskrankenkassen German Sickness Fund Database based on the first recorded SLE

To investigate the clinicopathological and prognostic significance of a nodular pattern and immunophenotypes in primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma (PMBL), histopathological features, including a nodular pattern and immunophenotypes, were analyzed in 58 Japanese PMBL patients. The patients were 23 men and 35 women with a median age of 31 years. The 4-year progression free survival (PFS) rate was 78%, and the 4-year overall survival (OS) rate was 89%. Among the histopathological and immunohistochemical features, Bcl6(+) (P = 0.013), MUM1(+) (P = 0.091), and pale cytoplasm (P = 0.064) were

B-cell lymphoma, unclassifiable, with features intermediate between diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and classical Hodgkin lymphoma (BCLu-DLBCL/CHL), also known as gray-zone lymphoma, has overlapping clinical and biological characteristics of both diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and classical Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL). These lymphomas are typically associated with mediastinal disease, and extranodal involvement is rare. In the present report, we describe a case of a 78-year-old woman with BCLu-DLBCL/CHL found to have extranodal lesions and no evidence of mediastinal disease. Although biopsy specimens

Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLDs) are lymphoid or plasmacytic proliferations that develop as a consequence of immunosuppression in a recipient of a solid organ, bone marrow or stem cell allograft. The development of PTLDs is usually associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and the disorder is also termed EBV-associated lymphoproliferative disorder (LPD). The development of PTLD is a rare complication in autologous bone marrow/peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. In the present study, we report a case of EBV-associated LPD which developed following autologous peripher

A 58-year-old man with a remote history of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), status post chemotherapy, radiation, and peripheral blood stem cell transplantation, presented with splenic nodular sclerosis classical Hodgkin lymphoma. He was found to have aortic and mitral valve mass lesions. The mitral valve mass showed typical histologic and immunophenotypic features of nodular sclerosis classical Hodgkin lymphoma, whereas the aortic valve mass and aortic mitral curtain tissue showed DLBCL with necrosis. Both tumors were Epstein-Barr virus positive and were clonally related; however, they w

We describe a 66-year-old woman with Epstein-Barr virus-associated lymphoproliferative disorder with lung and gastric tumors. We identified two lung tumors measuring 13 and 20 mm in diameter that consisted of CD30-, CD15-, and CD20-positive Hodgkin- and Reed-Sternberg-like cells and heterogeneous cellular infiltrates in a pronounced nodular pattern, with necrosis and vasculitis, diagnosed as nodular sclerosis classical Hodgkin lymphoma. A gastric tumor showed low-grade extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue type. Neoplastic cells in all tumors express

Mediastinal gray zone lymphoma (MGZL) represents a range of tumors possessing characteristics of both nodular sclerosis classical Hodgkin lymphoma (NSHL) and mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma (MLBCL). Here we report two patients with MGZL. Patient 1 was a 30-year-old woman and patient 2 was a 22-year-old man. Both patients had a mediastinal mass, were initially diagnosed with NSHL and exhibited resistance to first-line chemotherapy. Re-biopsy of the relapsed tumors or the residual lesion was performed and based on the findings the tumors were diagnosed as MGZL. In patient 1, the morphological

Nodular sclerosis classical Hodgkin lymphoma, clinical stage IIB with cervical and axillar lymph node involvement was histologically proven in a 47-year-old male patient with a long-lasting history of ichthyosis. Skin histology revealed only nonspecific lichenoid inflammatory changes. Patient was treated with six cycles of combined chemotherapy: doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine and dacarbazine. 15 months after initial treatment the first relapse of Hodgkin lymphoma was histologically confirmed and involvement of lymph nodes was identical with initial staging. Patient was successfully treate

Primary Hodgkin lymphoma of the gastrointestinal tract is an uncommon malignancy with few reported cases. Here we describe a rare variant of Hodgkin lymphoma presented in the gastrointestinal tract in association with Crohn's Disease. The patient is a 58 year old male with a 40 year history of formerly well-controlled Crohn's disease who presented with abdominal discomfort and constitutional symptoms. Computed tomography showed a 10 cm thickened segment of ileum and a dilated segment of small bowel. The patient underwent segmental resection, revealing a mass, which was diagnosed by pathology as
