A diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) was made in 81 patients referred for peripheral blood lymphocyte typing (PBL). A retrospective review was undertaken to see if correlations existed between surface marker phenotype-determined subclasses and clinical features. Surface markers utilized were surface immunoglobulin (sIg), sheep erythrocyte receptor (E), 65,000-dalton human T lymphocyte antigen (T65), Ia antigen, and for sIg+ cells, heavy and light chains. All patients were Ia+. Cells of 70% of patients were sIg+ E- T65+ Ia+, and the clinical heterogeneity was that of classical CLL.

From 1970 to 1980, 171 consecutive cases with non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) of Waldeyer's ring were admitted to this Institute. Many patients receiving cancer chemotherapy become nauseated as they anticipate their treatments. We studied this phenomenon in eighteen cancer chemotherapy patients. The eight patients who reported pretreatment nausea had more extensive disease than the other patients and had received twice as much chemotherapy. Analysing 24 cases of gastric sarcomas of hemopoietic origin (22 non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, 2 Hodgkin's disease) and one instance of plasmacytoma, the authors review the general and radiologic characteristics of such uncommon affections. From 1964-1978 primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was diagnosed and treated in 15 children (13 boys and 2 girls). In the 10 patients treated up to 1974, median survival was only 4 months (the longest being 16 months). Since 1974 all such patients have been put on high-dose combined chemotherapy as early as possible. Of 5 children thus treated, 3 have survived for 60, 26 and 11 months respectively and are still alive disease-free. During a preliminary clinical experience (1973-1977) we experimented three different sequences in associating 6 MOPP cycles (CT) with radiotherapy (RT) for the treatment of stage II and III Hodgkin's disease. A total of 55 consecutive previously untreated patients can be estimated to contribute in defining feasibility, immediate results and toxicity of the combined treatment. Clustering of lymphocytes around Reed-Sternberg cells was noticed in single cell suspensions made from viable Hodgkin's lymphoid tissue. Cytocentrifugation of the suspension showed that clustering also occurred around a smaller cell type, thought to be the precursor of the classical Reed-Sternberg cell. A patient with a classical salivary gland benign lymphoepithelial lesion (BLL) that converted to a lymphoblastic lymphoma (LSA) localized to the salivary glands is described. The malignant transformation of the BLL was preceded by Dilantin anticonvulsant therapy, and in vitro tests subsequent to the development of LSA demonstrated positive Dilantin-induced lymphocyte transformation. Fifty patients with lymphocytic lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia underwent splenectomy for various combinations of anemia, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia. All of these patients had advanced lymphoproliferative disease, and most had infiltration of bone marrow by neoplastic cells. Good response in all hematologic parameters was obtained in 27 of 48 evaluable patients. An additional 13 patients responded in one or two parameters; there were only 8 complete failures. A retrospective study of 116 children with Hodgkin's disease diagnosed in the period 1935-1970 was undertaken to assess the prognostic role of histopathologic classiciation and clinical extent of the disease.
