[Fundamental and clinical studies in pediatric field on ceftizoxime (author's transl)].

Fundamental and clinical studies in the pediatric field on ceftizoxime were carried out, and the following results were obtained. 1. In 4 children age from 3 years to 5 years, the serum concentrations and urinary excretion of ceftizoxime in a dose of 20 mg/kg by intravenous drip infusion over 60 minutes were measured. The peak serum levels were 22.0--84.0 microgram/ml (mean 45.0 microgram/ml) at the end of infusion. The mean serum levels after the end of infusion were 16.9 microgram/ml at 30 minutes, 12.1 microgram/ml at 1 hour, 6.2 microgram/ml at 2 hours, 1.6 microgram/ml at 4 hours and 0.6

[Salmonella enteritis in childhood - a tropical problem (author's transl)].

148 children with Salmonella gastroenteritis were admitted to the Mautner Markhofsches Kinderspital of Vienna in the 4-year period 1977 to 1980. The age distribution showed a marked prevalence of infants and young children. Salmonella Wien, typhi murium and enteritidis were the most commonly found Salmonella subtypes. No complications were encountered. After an average stay in hospital of 9 days the patients were considered fit for discharge, although only one third had negative stool cultures, whilst two thirds were convalescent Salmonella excretors. The duration of Salmonella excretion showe

Population-based comparative study of campylobacter and salmonella enteritis in South Australia.

A total of 658 cases of campylobacter enteritis was reported in South Australia in the 18 months from March, 1980. Although Campylobacter sp. may cause more gastrointestinal disease than Salmonella sp. during some time periods, our data suggest that the reverse applies over all. However, since campylobacter enteritis tends to affect older persons who possibly are investigated less frequently, the relative prevalence of campylobacter infection may have been understated. Both diseases are notified among preschoolers to a disproportionate extent; however, Campylobacter sp. show a greater predispo

[Laboratory and clinical studies of cefoxitin in pediatric infections (author's transl)].

The antimicrobial activity of cefoxitin against clinical isolated organisms was measured: Cefoxitin was more active than cefazolin and cephalothin against Escherichia coli. The serum concentrations of cefoxitin following intravenous injection of 25 mg/kg were 267.7, 38.8, 8.3 microgram/ml at 5, 30, 120 minutes after injection, respectively. Cefoxitin was excreted 90.5% in urine within 6 hours after injection. Cefoxitin was administered clinically to 22 pediatric patients with various infections (urinary tract infection 9, respiratory tract infection 10, S.S.S.S. 1, Salmonella enteritis 1, and

[Infantile Campylobacter enteritis (author's transl)].

9 children with campylobacter enteritis aging from 3 days to 4 years were seen over a 8-month period. In 2 cases prompt recovery was achieved by erythromycin therapy. In the remaining 7 cases, the course was most often very mild, and symptomatic therapy was sufficient. Epidemiologically, the incidence of campylobacter enteritis is comparable to that of salmonella enteritis. Obviously, birds and poultry, but also dogs, cats, sheep and other domestic and farm animals are important sources of infection. Spread among human beings has also been made probable. The most frequent clinical features are

Campylobacter as a cause of acute enteritis in children in South Australia. II. Clinical comparison with salmonella, rotavirus and non-specific enteritis.

The clinical features of 17 children with campylobacter enteritis were compared with 17 age- and sex-matched children with enteritis due to salmonella, rotavirus or those in whom there was no identifiable pathogen. Prominent clinical features of campylobacter enteritis included fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, blood in stools and periumbilical pain. Dehydration was uncommon, compared to rotavirus and non-specific enteritis. The acute illness was self-limited, in spite of prolonged asymptomatic faecal excretion of the organism. This prolonged carriage increases the risk of cross infection. No patien

[Therapy of salmonella enteritis with special reference to lactulose (author's transl)].

Excretion of Salmonellae in two groups of outpatients with Salmonellae is discussed. In one group of 51 adults, a total of 30 different serotypes were isolated. These patients were treated with lactulose and after four weeks the organisms had been eliminated in 68.6%. In a group of 23 adults receiving no treatment whatsoever, 56.5% were still excreting the organism after four weeks. Of the 64 in-patients studied, 37 received various antibiotics, 14 lactulose and in 13 only the symptoms were treated. The length of the excretion period was longer for the group receiving antibiotics (four weeks a

[Enteritis salmonellae in man and animal from 1953 to 1975 in Southern Bavaria (author's transl)].

The present paper gives a survey of the enteritis salmonelloses in man during the years from 1953 to 1975 (19400 first isolations) and in animals in the period from 1965 to 1975 (4600 first isolations and identification) in Southern Bavaria. In Southern Bavaria the number of isolations from enteritis salmonellae in man and animal has strongly increased during the last few years and the same holds good for the number of serotypes (Figs. 1, 2 and tables 1, 2). The most frequent serotypes in man are S. typhi-murium, S. enteritidis, S. panama, and S. thompson; in animals they are S. typhimurium, S

An outbreak of Salmonella enteritis and septicemia in a population of uremic patients. A review of four cases, including infection of an arteriovenous fistula.

An outbreak of enteritis and septicemia caused by Salmonella enteritidis occurred in a population of uremic patients treated in a nephrology unit. In one of the patients, an arteriovenous fistula was infected by this organism. The source of the outbreak was traced to the refrigerator and sink in the unit. This degree of morbidity and mortality far exceeds that previously reported in infections with nontyphoid Salmonella sp and is presumbly related to the decreased immune response seen in uremia.

Ocular inflammation in Reiter's disease after Salmonella enteritis.

We studied characteristics of ocular inflammation in Reiter's disease after Salmonella enteritis in eight patients. After an acute onset with diarrhea, fever in six patients, and headache in three patients, all patients developed arthritis; six patients had myalgia; six patients, urethritis; and one patient, carditis. Sacroiliitis was found in four patients. All patients had HLA-B28 antigen. Conjunctivitis occurred in seven patients. It was mostly mild with no chemosis, follicles, or keratitis, and resolved in ten days. In one case palpebral edema, chemosis in the conjunctiva, and purulent exu

Cushing's syndrome in infancy: difficulties in diagnosis and adrenal autotransplantation after therapeutic adrenalectomy.

A two-month-old female with clinical manifestations of Cushing's syndrome including mild virilization exhibited an unusual steroid pattern illustrating difficulties in diagnosis of this disorder in infancy. Unequivocal abnormalities were limited to serial elevations of serum cortisol concentration, hyperresponsiveness to ACTH, resistance of serum cortisol to dexamethasone suppression, and elevation of testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate concentration. On the other hand, twenty-four hour urinary 17-hydroxysteroid, 17-ketosteroid, free cortisol, and 6B-hydroxycortisol excretion were

[Institutional epidemic gastroenteritis caused by Salmonella enteritis Worthington type in 1976].

An outbreak of gastroenteritis that occurred in a boarding school in Mexico is described. The attack rate was 100% since all of 151 pupils were involved. Salmonella enteritidis serotype Worthington was identified as the only etiologic agent. This microorganism was isolated from 60% of the samples studied. Due to the delay in notification the food ingested during the outbreak could not be analyzed.

[Salmonella-cholecystitis (author's transl)].

Gastroenteritis due to Salmonella enteritis is an endemic disease in our region, extraintestinal manifestations however are rare. We report a 8 years old girl who presented after 4 days of an unspecific diarrheal disease with watery liquid stools, vomiting, abdominal cramps, fever above 39 Grad C and symptoms and signs of an acute abdominal emergency. Mid abdominal laparotomy disclosed a cholecystitis with reactive peritonitis. Cultures of bile showed Salmonella group B as the causative organism. Cholecystectomy was performed, postoperatively Gentamycin later Chloramphenicol was administered.

[An oral enteritis-vaccine composed of twelve heat inactivated Enterobacteriaceae. 1. Communication: Theoretical and epidemiological considerations (author's transl)].

The infectious diseases of the human intestinal tract which are caused by bacteria must be distinguished into two groups on account of their different pathogenesis: the cyclic infections (typhoid fever, parathyphoid fever) and the local infections (cholera, dysentery, Salmonella enteritis, dyspepsia coli infections). The local infections of the intestine do not cause a systemic but only a local immunity of the intestinal mucosa. It is necessary therefore to induce local immunity as active immunoprophylaxis by orally administering inactivated antigens. The twelve-fold enteritis vaccine consists

A model of salmonella enteritis: the behaviour of Salmonella enteritidis in chick intestine studies by light and electron microscopy.

Salmonella enteritidis was injected into isolated "loops" of duodenum, midgut and ileocaeca in anaesthetized 1-day-old chicks. Using light microscopy with conventional staining and fluorescent antibody techniques, the organism were observed in increasing numbers in the epithelium and lamina propria of each region between 2 and 12 h after inoculation. The potential ability of the salmonellas to enter the mucosa at any level of the intestine was thus demonstrated. The penetration of caecal epithelium by the organisms was studied by electron-microscopy. Uptake of salmonellas was associated with e
