Opportunistic infections by Brucella anthropi and Brucella intermedia: a case series of rare non-brucellosis diseases in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Recently reclassified under the Brucella genus, Ochrobactrum species are rare opportunistic pathogens in immunocompromised hosts, causing non-brucellosis diseases. They exhibit multi-drug resistance (including AmpC) and often require combination therapy. This is the first study from Saudi Arabia to review infections by Brucella anthropi and Brucella intermedia, focusing on clinical significance, resistance, and outcomes. METHOD: A retrospective review was conducted on infections caused by B. anthropi and B. intermedia between January 2016 to December 2024. Data on patient demograph

Case Report: Acute Brucellosis Due to Brucella suis in a Brazilian Gold Miner Diagnosed in French Guiana.

A 29-year-old Brazilian illegal gold miner developed intermittent fever. Blood cultures were positive for Gram-negative coccobacilli and, after an initial misidentification by an automated identification system, the diagnosis of brucellosis caused by Brucella suis was confirmed. We hypothesize an association with domestic or wild swine exposure. The patient responded well to standard antibiotic therapy of brucellosis. We report the first case of human brucellosis on the Guiana Shield. This report underlines the importance of considering brucellosis in the presence of a fever of unknown origin,

[Brucellosis in Alpine ibex: 10 years of research and expert assessments].

Brucellosis due to Brucella melitensis affects domestic and wild ruminants, as well as other mammals, including humans. Despite France being officially free of bovine brucellosis since 2005, two human cases of Brucella melitensis infection in the French Alps in 2012 led to the discovery of one infected cattle herd and of one infected population of wild Alpine ibex (Capra ibex). In this review, we present the results of 10 years of research on the epidemiology of brucellosis in this population of Alpine ibex. We also discuss the insights brought by research and expert assessments on the efficac

Neurobrucellosis Complicated by Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Case Report.

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease. It is also one of the neglected infectious diseases and is less well-known compared to other diseases. It is acquired from infected animals (cattle, sheep, goats, camels, pigs, or other animals) through the consumption of unpasteurized dairy products or contact with tissues or fluids. Sensory neural hearing loss (SNHL) in neurobrucellosis had been described in the literature, mostly as an incidental finding that otolaryngologists should consider in any patient with fever and a history of travel to the Middle East, Central or South America, or other brucellosi

Canine brucellosis due to Brucella canis: description of the disease and control measures.

Brucellosis is a contagious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Brucella, which can affect different animal species. Dogs may occasionally be infected with B. abortus, B. melitensis or B. suis, or by the endemic form of the disease, caused by B. canis. Among the brucellosis‑affecting domestic animals, that of the dog is certainly the least frequent, but also the least studied. Canine brucellosis due to B. canis represents the dog‑specific brucellosis, both because it is the main susceptible animal species, and because it constitutes its fundamental reservoir of infection. The disease can a

Phylogeography and epidemiology of Brucella suis biovar 2 in wildlife and domestic swine.

Swine brucellosis due to Brucella suis biovar 2 (bv2) is enzootic in wild boar and hare in continental Europe and may cause major economic losses to the pig industry, mainly in free-ranged pig farms. The high nucleotide identity found among the B. suis biovar 2 isolates has long hindered the full understanding of the epidemiology and the phylogeography of the disease. Here, we used multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat (VNTR) analysis (MLVA) and whole-genome analysis to identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in order to gain insights from the largest B. suis bv2 dataset analyzed so

Characterization and evolution of countries affected by bovine brucellosis (1996-2014).

This paper describes the global distribution and temporal evolution of bovine brucellosis due to Brucella abortus during a 19-year period (1996-2014) using the information officially reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) by veterinary services of 156 countries. Variables that can influence the health status of bovine brucellosis (i.e., year, per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP), continent and bovine population) were also analysed. Countries were classified into three categories of health situations: ENZOOTIC: countries infected, which may have been free of brucellosis b

New insights into phylogeography of worldwide Brucella canis isolates by comparative genomics-based approaches: focus on Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Canine brucellosis, due to Brucella canis, is a worldwide zoonosis that remains endemic in South America, including Brazil. Implementation of powerful whole-genome sequencing approaches allowed exploring the Brucella genus considered as monomorphic, with, to date, more than 500 genomes available in public databases. Nevertheless, with under-representation of B. canis genomes -only twenty complete or draft genomes-, lack of knowledge about this species is still considerable. This report describes a comparative genomics-based phylogeographic investigation of 53 B. canis strains, incl

Seroprevalence of Brucella suis in eastern Latvian wild boars (Sus scrofa).

Brucellosis due to Brucella suis biovar 2 is one of the most important endemic diseases in wild boar (Sus scrofa) populations in Europe. The aim of the present study was to determine the seroprevalence of brucellosis in wild boars in the eastern part of Latvia. Wild boars killed by hunters in the period from January to April 2015 (n = 877) and from March to April in 2016 (n = 167) were examined for antibodies against B. suis by the Rose Bengal test (RBT), a complement fixation test (CFT), and by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. In 2015, 199 samples (22.7%) were positive by RBT and/or CFT wh

MLVA-16 typing of Brucella suis biovar 2 strains circulating in Europe.

Swine brucellosis due to Brucella suis biovar 2 is an emerging disease in Europe, associated with increase of extensive swine farms and high density of infected wild boars. Since knowledge of predominant circulating strains is a prerequisite for any epidemiological study, accurate molecular typing procedures were applied to a collection of 176 B. suis isolates. By using suis-ladder multiplex PCR and PCR-RFLP analysis of omp2a, omp2b and omp31 genes, five haplotypes were identified among 160 biovar 2 isolates, with haplotypes 2d and 2e restricted to Portugal and Spain and haplotypes 2a, 2b and

Emergence of Brucella suis in dogs in New South Wales, Australia: clinical findings and implications for zoonotic transmission.

BACKGROUND: Animal reservoirs of brucellosis constitute an ongoing threat to human health globally, with foodborne, occupational and recreational exposures creating opportunities for transmission. In Australia and the United States, hunting of feral pigs has been identified as the principal risk factor for human brucellosis due to Brucella suis. Following increased reports of canine B. suis infection, we undertook a review of case notification data and veterinary records to address knowledge gaps about transmission, clinical presentation, and zoonotic risks arising from infected dogs. Control of Bovine Brucellosis from Persistently Infected Holdings Using RB51 Vaccination with Test-and-Slaughter: A Comparative Case Report from a High Incidence Area in Portugal.

Bovine brucellosis due to Brucella abortus infection causes significant reproductive and production losses in cattle and is a major zoonosis. Eradication of this disease has proved difficult to achieve in Portugal where it still occurs in some regions despite an ongoing national eradication programme. In 2004, the Alentejo region, a major cattle producing area, reported one of the highest levels of bovine brucellosis in the country, especially in one divisional area. In that area, bovine brucellosis was particularly problematic in a holding of ten herds, the largest extensive cattle unit in th

Liver histology of acute brucellosis caused by Brucella melitensis.

As a major organ of the mononuclear phagocytic system, the liver is probably involved in all cases of brucellosis. In this prospective study, liver slides prepared from percutaneous liver biopsy samples of 20 patients with clinical and laboratory evidence of acute brucellosis due to Brucella melitensis were examined for the presence or absence of granulomas by pathologists in Iran and the United States. Nineteen men and one woman ranging in age from 14 to 62 years were studied. All patients had clinical signs and symptoms compatible with acute brucellosis, and all had significantly elevated ti

Evaluation of different enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for the diagnosis of brucellosis due to Brucella melitensis in sheep.

Six serological assays for the diagnosis of ovine brucellosis, due to Brucella melitensis were evaluated. Reference serum samples from sheep of known B. melitensis infection status (n=118) were assessed using the Rose Bengal test (RBT), complement fixation test (CFT) and four commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), including two indirect ELISAs (iELISAs), one competitive ELISA (cELISA) and one blocking ELISA (bELISA). The highest differential positive rates (DPR) were obtained with the cELISA and bELISA, while the lowest DPR was estimated using iELISAs. A latent class analysis

Brucellosis due to Brucella suis in a swine herd associated with a human clinical case in the State of São Paulo, Brazil.

Brucella suis has been recognized as the major etiological agent of human brucellosis in areas free from Brucella melitensis infection. However, with changes in swine management, the occurrence of swine brucellosis has decreased as has the human incidence of B. suis infection. A swine brucellosis outbreak within a herd from Jaboticabal (São Paulo, Brazil) was detected in July 2006. The herd comprised approximately 300 sows and 1,500 finishing animals. Many sows within this herd experienced abortions, while others exhibited vaginal discharge; three sows suffered posterior paralysis. Among 271 s

Assessment of performance of selected serological tests for diagnosing brucellosis in pigs.

Swine brucellosis due to Brucella suis is considered an emerging zoonotic disease whose control is based on serological testing and the subsequent culling of seropositive animals or the full depopulation of affected flocks. Here we assessed the performance of several serological tests (Rose Bengal Test [RBT], indirect ELISA [i-ELISA], blocking ELISA [b-ELISA], and two competitive ELISAs [c-ELISA]) for diagnosing swine brucellosis caused by B. suis biovar 2. Both frequentistic and Bayesian statistical inference were used. A frequentistic analysis, using sera from known gold standard (GS) popula

Evaluation of five serological tests for the diagnosis of porcine brucellosis in French Polynesia.

Porcine brucellosis due to Brucella suis biovar 1 raises important issues for pig breeders in French Polynesia. In this region, the disease is enzootic, spreads silently and engenders economic losses in infected farms as well as sporadic human cases. While serological tests are essential in surveillance and control programmes of animal diseases, to date none of the available tests have been shown to be reliable enough to be used as a gold standard in routine individual diagnosis of porcine brucellosis. Few studies about the estimation of the sensitivity and the specificity of porcine brucellos
