The effect of interferon-alpha on Daudi lymphoma cells either sensitive or resistant to the action of this cytokine has been analysed in terms of phospholipase C (PLC) and D (PLD) activities. Results have shown a combined modulation of PIP2-specific phospholipase C and phospholipase D. In particular, a decreased activity of PIP2-specific PLC has been found, concomitant to a PLD-mediated phosphatidylcholine hydrolysis, suggesting that the intracellular signalling activated by interferon in Daudi cells involves a phospholipase D/phosphohydrolase pathway.

We established decay-accelerating factor (DAF)/CD59-positive and -negative substrains of a human B cell line, Ramos, R(DAF+/CD59+) and R(DAF-/CD59-) respectively. Translocation between the c-myc protooncogene and one of the three immunoglobulin loci is a cytogenetic hallmark of the B cell tumor, Burkitt's lymphoma. A 29-yr-old patient is described, who presented with rapid general deterioration and right heart failure. Two-dimensional echocardiography revealed massive intracardiac tumor involving the right atrium, the right ventricle and the left atrium. At histology the diagnosis of Burkitt's lymphoma was made. This report presents what we believe to be the first case of a patient with primary cardiac manifestations and multiple intracardiac masses in this disease.

Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) cell lines estimated in a previous study as having a high, low and no tumourigenicity (7) were intravenously (i.v.) injected into preirradiated (480 rad) nude mice. The regulation of the latent promoter BC-R2 of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was examined using the chloramphenicol acetyl transferase (CAT) gene reporter system.
