Transplanted lymphomas, most of thymic origin, induced in BALB/c mice with 1-ethyl-1-nitrosourea (ENU) and transplanted spontaneously occurring lymphomas of AKR mice were examined for the expression of the T-cell antigens Ly, TL, and Thy 1 by using three serological methods. We demonstrate the use of goat erythrocytes in a rosette procedure for the classification of human lymphocytes. The population is almost perfectly overlapping with the lymphocytes which form rosettes with sheep red blood cells. 70·2 ± 7·5% of peripheral lymphocytes form rosettes with goat erythrocytes and less than 1% of these cells have surface immunoglobulins. Four of 5 howler monkeys (Alouatta caraya) experimentally infected with Herpesvirus saimiri (HVS) developed a rapidly fatal malignant lymphoma accompanied by peripheral T-cell lymphocytosis. HVS was isolated from fresh and tissue cultured blood and tissue lymphocytes and from cell cultures derived from nonlymphoid organs. Humoral antibodies against HVS-induced antigens were detected in the sera of the animals. The in vitro response of the peripheral blood lymphocytes to mitogenic stimulants was depressed following HVS infection.

In the present study, 15 children with non-Hodgkin lymphoma have been immunologically evaluated by the following parameters on peripheral blood (PB) lymphocytes: phytohemagglutinin responsiveness (PHA-r); non-immune rosette formation with sheep red blood cells (RF-L) as T-cell marker; presence of surface immunoglobulins (sIg-L) as B-cell marker; serum immunoglobulins levels (IgA, IgM, IgG). Two cases of T-cell chronic lymphoid leukaemia in adults were classified by recently developed immunological methods. Clinically there was splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, marked anaemia, para-aortic lymph nodes, cutaneous infiltration, little peripheral lymph-node enlargement and significant marrow infiltration. Immunological tests of membrane antigens revealed T-cell determinants. T-CLL may differ in its course and prognosis from B-CLL and may require different treatment.
