We describe the clinicopathological features of 20 patients with T/natural killer (NK)-cell lymphoma-associated hemophagocytic syndrome (T/NK-LAHS). These patients were categorized into 2 groups according to the onset of hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS). Group 1 developed HPS during the clinical course, typically at the terminal phase of the disease. This group consisted of 7 patients with extranodal lymphoma arising in the nasal cavity, paranasal cavity, tonsils, or skin at presentation. In 5 of these patients, the preferred diagnosis was nasal and nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma, whereas the dise

Due to their minority among the non-Hodgkin lymphomas, classification of extranodal T-cell lymphomas, including those of the natural killer (NK) cell type, has long been controversial and unclear, and the clinical outcome is not well clarified. Recently, new well-defined disease entities have been described based on tumor cell biology combined with anatomical site, clinical features, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) status, and cell lineage as determined by immunophenotype and genotype. Cytological features are usually not specific, and there are no morphologic correlates with the classification of ex

A clinicopathological study of 515 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) cases was performed using the revised European-American classification of lymphoid neoplasms (REAL classification) in an HTLV1-nonendemic area of Japan. The following characteristics were revealed: 1) frequency of extranodal lymphomas was high (59%) with 79% B-cell lymphomas in this series, while the overall ratio of B:T/NK lineage was 3.7:1; 2) the most common type was the diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (46%), follicle center lymphomas occurred at an incidence lower (15%) than that in European and American populations, and margina

Pathological or spontaneous rupture of the spleen has been described in a variety of diseases affecting the spleen, with infections being cited as the cause in most cases. In hematological malignancies it is a rare event, despite the frequent involvement of the spleen in these diseases. It has, however, been described in patients with acute and chronic leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of B-cell origin, mycosis fungoides, and so-called histiocytic lymphoma. Here, we present a fatal case of splenic rupture caused by infiltration of a peripheral T-cell lymphoma, unspecified acc

We report an unusual case of a cutaneous T cell lymphoma with the clinical picture of leonine facies as the only skin symptom appearing during the first years of the disease. Small atypical lymphocytes with partly pleomorphic, partly indented cerebriform nuclei are present in the facial skin as well as in the peripheral blood and in the bone marrow. The lymphoma shows an indolent clinical behaviour without rapid progression of the disease. It shares features with both pleomorphic small/medium-sized T cell lymphoma and mycosis fungoides, but cannot be classified according to the criteria of the

Chemokine receptors mediate the migration of lymphocytes through the binding of soluble ligands, and their expression is differentially regulated in lymphocyte subsets. The pattern of chemokine receptor expression in T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma has not been previously studied. Using a panel of mouse monoclonal antibodies, we studied the immunohistochemical expression of the Th1-associated chemokine receptor CXCR3 in 141 patients with T-cell lymphoma, and we studied the receptors CCR4 and CCR5 and some of their ligands in a subset of these tumors. Expression of CXCR3 was typical of the smaller

In a 22-year-old male with a 10-day history of fever, painful swelling in the left groin, and abdominal complaints, emergency surgery was performed because of spontaneous splenic rupture. At histology, a cellular infiltrate of intermediate-sized atypical lymphocytes was seen in the splenic white pulp, staining for T-cell markers. In addition, CD30 and anaplastic lymphoma kinase 1 (ALK) were diffusely positive, thus, representing a case of anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), T-cell, ALK-positive, small cell monomorphic variant. ALK-positive ALCL patients generally bear a much better prognosi

The monoclonal antibodies L26 (CD20) and CD79a are very useful reagents for the immunohistochemical assessment of B-cell lineage in lymphoproliferative disorders. Although very few CD20-positive peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTL) have been reported, comprehensive analyses of CD79a reactivity in extranodal PTL and NK/T-cell lymphomas have not been performed previously. This study investigated CD79a (clone JCB117) and CD20 reactivity in 94 extranodal non-B-cell lymphomas (enteropathy-type intestinal T-cell lymphoma [n = 52], nasal NK/T-cell lymphoma [n = 11], and primary cutaneous PTL [n = 31]) a

New insights into the immunology and genetics of malignant lymphomas have allowed the recognition of new entities and the refinement of previously recognized disease categories. The relative incidence of these subtypes of malignant lymphoma is also known to differ according to geographic location. In order to clarify the current status of malignant lymphomas in Japan and the relative incidences of their subtypes, 3194 patients were classified according to the new World Health Organization (WHO) classification. Among these were 3025 cases (94.71%) of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (2189 cases (68.53%)

Peripheral T-cell lymphomas are uncommon, accounting for only 10% to 15% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas and their classification has been controversial. We report a case of peripheral T-cell lymphoma with angiocentric growth pattern which presented as a paratesticular tumoral nodule in a 47-year-old-man. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples from the paratesticular tumor and non-infiltrated adjacent tissue were submitted to histological, immunohistochemical, polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based and in situ hybridization analysis. Histopathologically, there was a lymphomatous infiltrate in th

Malignant lymphomas, originating from peripheral T or NK cells, are rare tumours in Europe and account for less than 10% of all malignant lymphomas. In this review, the salient features of the more frequently occurring entities derived from T or NK cells will be presented. Nasal NK/T cell lymphoma is mainly found in the nose and paranasal sinuses and often, but not always, display an angiocentric growth pattern leading to coagulation necrosis. The tumor cells consistently express CD56, CD2 and the EBER molecules encoded by the Epstein-Barr virus. Clonal T cell receptor gene rearrangements are

AIMS: We investigated the phenotypic and cytotoxic characteristics of different types of peripheral T-cell and NK-cell lymphomas and correlated the findings of cytotoxic phenotype with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) association.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Eighty cases of peripheral T-cell and NK-cell lymphomas, classified according to the REAL classification, were investigated for cytotoxic phenotype (by studying T-cell intracellular antigen-1 (TIA-1) expression immunohistochemically) and EBV association (by in situ hybridization for EBV-encoded small non-polyadenylated RNAs), and the results were correl

One hundred thirty-seven patients with peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTL) were examined for the presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) using in situ hybridization for EBV-encoded RNA (EBER) and Bam H-fragment, lower strand frame (BHLF) and immunohistochemical stain for latent membrane protein (LMP). EBER was detected in tumor cells in 79 cases (58%); 26/66 PTL, unspecified (39%), 3/4 AILD (75%), 47/51 angiocentric lymphomas (AL) (92%), and 3/13 anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) (23%) by Revised European-American Lymphoma (REAL) classification. EBER was detected in 17/36 nodal (47%) vs. 62/101

After the publication of a Revised European-American Classification of Lymphoid Neoplasms (REAL classification) in 1994, there have been reports from Europe and America regarding its practical utility and clinical significance. However, no studies have been published from Eastern countries including Japan. It has been well recognized that the distribution of malignant lymphoma in Japan is quite different from that seen in Western countries. In addition, some new entities have also been described in the REAL classification. Therefore, it seems important to examine its practical utility and clin

Nasal NK/T-cell lymphoma is a unique form of lymphoma highly associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). These lymphomas are rare in Western populations and much more prevalent in some Asian and Latin American countries. Although there are several sizable studies from Asian countries, the same is not true from South America. The aim of this study was to analyze a series of 32 cases of nasal T-cell lymphoma from Peru and to further extend the characterization of this disease. Immunohistochemistry was performed on paraffin sections using the following antibodies: CD20 (L26), CD45RO, CD3, Ki67, CD5
