Subcutaneous panniculitis-like lymphomas (SPTCLs) are a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by pleomorphic lymphocytes infiltrating the subcutis in a lobular panniculitis-like pattern. Characterization of SPTCL based on T-cell phenotype has prognostic significance in that most patients with the alpha/beta T-cell phenotype of SPTCL demonstrate clinically indolent behavior, whereas those with gamma/delta variant typically manifest more aggressive disease. In the past, traditional therapies have included single-agent or systemic multi-agent chemotherapy with or without radiation therapy

Within the large framework of the lymphoproliferative diseases, the primary cutaneous lymphomas are distinct pathologic conditions, defined by particular morphologic, immunologic, genetic, and clinic criteria. The study aimed to create the first clinicopathological and immunohistochemical profile of primary cutaneous lymphoma for a Romanian region. We investigated a series of 16 cases (diagnosed during a 5-year period) in accordance with the general principles of primary cutaneous lymphoma management. The methods included the clinic and morphologic exams, the latter relying on standard and imm

BACKGROUND: Although the WHO classification (2001) requires a great deal of morphologic, immunophenotypic, genetic, and clinical features for classifying lymphomas, it is still feasible to misdiagnose under limited resources, especially a limited panel of antibodies used for immunophenotyping. To identify pitfalls in classifying lymphomas among hematopathologist, general pathologists, and pathology residents under this situation.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Newly diagnosed lymphoma cases from 1 July 2002 to 30 June 2003 at Siriraj Hospital were included for two rounds of individually blinded review

BACKGROUND: A multitude of definitions determining multidrug resistance (MDR) of Gram-negative organisms exist worldwide. The definitions differ depending on their purpose and on the issueing country or organization. The MDR definitions of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) were primarily chosen to harmonize epidemiological surveillance. The German Commission of Hospital Hygiene and Infection Prevention (KRINKO) issued a national guideline which is mainly used to guide infection prevention and control (IPC) measures. The Swiss University Hospital Zurich (UHZ) - in ab

We report a case of subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL), associated with macrophage activation syndrome, mimicking a lupus erythematosus panniculitis (LEP). A 29-year-old woman presented with high fever, general malaise, nausea, vomiting, and subcutaneous nodules and ulcerating lesions located on the lower extremities. The histopathology showed an infiltration of the panniculus, mostly involving fat, and periadnexial and perivascular structures consistent with lymphocytic lobular panniculitis (LLP). LLP is a shared feature of LEP and SPTCL. The immunophenotyping of the cell

Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCLs) represent a heterogeneous group of neoplasms originating from skin-homing T cells that show considerable variation in clinical presentation, histological appearance, immuno- phenotype, and prognosis. This review provides a historic overview of the classification of CTCLs from the first description of a patient with mycosis fungoides in 1806 to the recently published WHO-EORTC classification. Practical guidelines for the usage of the WHO-EORTC classification and relevant features of new or newly defined entities such as subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell ly

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) is an unusual type of skin lymphoma, characterized by subcutaneous soft tissue infiltration with pleomorphic T-cells and benign macrophages that mimic panniculitis. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis is a rare but potentially fatal disorder which is thought to result from uncontrolled activation and proliferation of T-cells and excessive activation of macrophages. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis have been reported as the presenting feature in 37% of SPTCL patients. High-resolution ultrasonographic appearance of SPTCL with a characterist

A case of subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) is reported. A 27-year-old man presented with fever and abdominal swelling. His laboratory examination revealed pancytopenia and liver dysfunction. The diagnosis of SPTCL was made by biopsy based on thickened subcutaneous tissue. In addition, bone marrow specimen showed a hemophagocytosis syndrome (HPS). Methylprednisolone pulse therapy was initiated followed by prednisolone (60 mg/day) and cyclosporin A (150 mg/day). He responded to the treatment and remained asymptomatic for at least for 6 months. Our results suggest that a tri

Lymphoma occurring after organ transplantation has been well described. The majority of cases are B-cell lymphomas and are usually associated with Epstein-Barr virus. Only a minority of posttransplant lymphomas are of T-cell origin, and primary cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) is extremely rare. In this article, we report a case of cutaneous peripheral T-cell lymphoma, pleomorphic CD30+ large-cell type, and review the literature relating to posttransplant primary CTCL. Of the 23 cases of posttransplant primary CTCL, 5 patients had erythrodermic disease, and 8 had primary cutaneous anaplastic l

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) is a rare disorder. We examined two females and one male with multiple soft-tissue masses in the abdominal wall. One of these three patients also had soft-tissue masses in the right thigh and right buttock. The histologic diagnosis was revealed as SPTCL in all three cases. The ultrasound (US) findings in two of these cases were diffuse, ill-defined hyperechoic areas with a linear vascular signal. The findings of the abdominal and pelvic computed tomography (CT) scanning with contrast enhancement were multiple enhancing nodules with an infi

We report 3 cases of lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP) with a CD56+, cytotoxic immunophenotype. All 3 patients presented with clinical histories typical of LyP, with one patient having associated mycosis fungoides. Histologically, two cases were type A LyP and one was type B. All 3 cases demonstrated a T-cell receptor clone in lesional skin without evidence of blood involvement. The atypical lymphocytes in each of the 3 cases expressed cytotoxic granules (T-cell intracellular antigen-1+ and granzyme B+) and were CD8+ and CD56+. Expression of CD56 is associated with a poor prognosis in subcutaneous

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma is a rare cytotoxic T-cell lymphoma of the skin that preferentially infiltrates the subcutaneous tissue. We report here this lymphoma occurring in a 26-month-old Korean girl. She presented with multiple erythematous subcutaneous nodules on both extremities and her back along with systemic symptoms. She had a protracted course of multiple erythematous subcutaneous nodules for 1 month and a spiking fever was often noted. The histopathologic findings for the subcutaneous nodules were lobular panniculitis-like material that was composed of atypical ly

We report the case of a patient who presented with painful nodular subcutaneous lesions on the lower limbs and episodes of high temperature (> 39.5 degrees C). Histologic examination and immunohistochemical study of a biopsy specimen from a nodular lesion were consistent with the diagnosis of subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Diagnosis is made particularly difficult, especially in the early stages, by nonspecific clinical features shared by many types of panniculitis. Therefore, it seems advisable to consider the possibility of this type of ly

We investigated the efficacy of a dose-intensified double-CHOP regimen followed by high-dose chemotherapy with or without peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT) in 11 patients with four types of peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL). Three of the 4 patients with unspecified PTCL (PTCLu) achieved complete response (CR); 1 patient relapsed and 1 died of secondary leukemia after consolidation therapy. All angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AILT) and subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) patients achieved CR; 5 of 6 have remained disease free for more than 3 years. The pa

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) is a rare cytotoxic T-cell lymphoma of the skin presenting with histopathologic features simulating those of a lobular panniculitis. The presence of neoplastic T-lymphocytes forming a rim around the individual fat cells in the subcutaneous lobules, so-called "rimming" of adipocytes, is considered a characteristic morphologic feature of this type of cutaneous lymphoma. In this study we reviewed a series of 45 biopsy specimens of primary and secondary cutaneous B- and T-cell lymphomas and one of myeloid leukemia involving the subcutaneous ti

A 17-year-old girl previously in good health presented with a 2-month history of recurrent, high-grade fever; general fatigue; anorexia; a 10-kg weight loss; and multiple, painful, reddish skin lesions on the lower abdomen. Some lesions were ulcerated, with an oily yellowish brown discharge. A systemic review was unremarkable other than bleeding from the nose. Her medical and family histories were unremarkable. On examination, the patient was pale, jaundiced, and febrile (temperature of 39 degrees C). She had enlarged lymph nodes in the axillary and inguinal areas. There was moderate hepatospl

We report a 48-year-old man who presented with ulcerated plaques and nodules of the lower extremities. Skin biopsies revealed a dense lymphocytic infiltrate involving the dermis and the subcutis in a lobular and septal pattern. No overt cytological atypia was present. Notably, several features resembling lupus erythematosus were present, including vacuolar interface change and abundant dermal mucin deposition. The patient developed pulmonary nodules, and a lung biopsy showed a perivascular and interstitial lymphoid infiltrate without overt atypia. The cutaneous and pulmonary lymphoid infiltrat
