A new group of subcutaneous, natural killer (NK), NK/T-cell, and other cytotoxic T-cell lymphomas of the skin has been recently described, and some have been included as distinct clinicopathologic entities in the classification of hematologic malignancies recently proposed by the World Health Organization. In the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer classification for cutaneous lymphomas, they would be classified either as CD30- large T-cell lymphoma, small/medium pleomorphic T-cell lymphoma, or subcutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Precise clinicopathologic and prognostic featur

T-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) represents approximately 10% to 15% of all lymphomas in Western countries. Patients with T-cell NHL are often treated similarly to patients with intermediate grade B-cell NHL, although many reports have demonstrated lower overall survival rates in patients with T-cell NHL compared to patients with B-cell NHL. Updated classifications have recognized specific clinical and pathologic T-cell entities, such as peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise characterized, angioimmunoblastic lymphoma, systemic anaplastic T-cell lymphoma, adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma,

In an attempt to better understand the clinicopathologic features of T- and natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphomas in Taiwan and the distribution and relative frequency of each subtype according to the new WHO classification, the pathology file of a medical center in southern Taiwan during 1989-2002 was retrospectively searched. The results of light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization for Epstein-Barr virus (EBER), and T-cell receptor (TCR)-gamma chain gene rearrangement were correlated with clinical findings. A total of 72 cases were identified. They were peripheral T-cell l

The bcl-3 gene at chromosome 19q13 encodes a member of the IkappaB family involved in regulating the NFkappaB pathway. Originally identified by its involvement in the rare t(14:19)(q32;q13), BCL-3 expression has never been analyzed in a wide variety of lymphomas. We assessed BCL-3 expression in 353 cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and Hodgkin lymphoma using formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue specimens, a monoclonal antibody specific for BCL-3, and immunohistochemical methods. Of 172 B-cell lymphomas, 10 (6%) were positive for BCL-3, including six of 23 (26%) diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, o

The two-compound product containing calcipotriol 50 microg/g plus betamethasone dipropionate 0.5 mg/g (Dovobet, Daivobet) [referred to here as calcipotriol/betamethasone dipropionate], is a topical treatment for psoriasis vulgaris, combining a vitamin D analog and a corticosteroid. For most adult patients with psoriasis vulgaris on the trunk and limbs, up to 4 weeks of therapy with calcipotriol/betamethasone dipropionate provides an effective and well tolerated treatment. In clinical trials, patients with a mean baseline psoriasis area and severity index (PASI) of 9.5-10.9 experienced a mean 6

Cutaneous lymphomas are rare in young patients and are mostly represented by mycosis fungoides and its variants and CD30+ lymphoproliferative disorders (lymphomatoid papulosis [LYP] and anaplastic large T-cell lymphoma). We report our observations in a series of 69 patients less than 20 years of age who presented either with primary cutaneous lymphoma (n = 62) or with secondary manifestations of extracutaneous disease (n = 7). Clinicopathologic features permitted classification of the cases into the following diagnostic categories: mycosis fungoides (n = 24, all primary cutaneous), anaplastic

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous lymphomas expressing a cytotoxic or natural killer (NK) cell phenotype represent a group of lymphoproliferative disorders for which there is currently much confusion and little consensus regarding the best nomenclature and classification.
METHODS: This study analyzes 48 cases of primary cutaneous lymphoma expressing cytotoxic proteins and/or the NK cell marker, CD56. These cases were collected for a workshop of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Cutaneous Lymphoma Task Force, to better clarify the clinical, morphologic, and phenotypic features

Peripheral subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (PSPTCL) is a rare form of cutaneous lymphoma recently proposed as a distinct clinicopathological entity. It usually presents with multiple indurated subcutaneous plaques or tumours, most commonly located on the extremities and trunk and clinically mimicking lobular panniculitis. Associated constitutional symptoms due to haemophagocytic syndrome may advance or, more often, complicate the clinical course in about 40-70% of cases. Finding of TIA-1+ and perforin + cytolytic granules in atypical pleomorphic lymphocytes suggests PSPTCL origi

We report a 35-year-old pregnant woman with progressive subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL). During pregnancy chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (CHOP) stabilized the disease for 4 months before new manifestations appeared. After delivery of a healthy girl, myeloablative radiochemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation could be performed leading to complete remission.

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) is an uncommon type of cutaneous lymphoma with an aggressive natural history. It generally carries a poor prognosis despite standard anthracycline-based chemotherapy. The optimum therapy is unknown. We report the case of a 66-year-old man with CD4/CD8 double negative SPTCL who achieved a complete remission with single-agent fludarabine. He received a total of six cycles of fludarabine given at 25 mg/m(2) daily for 5 days every 4 weeks. His skin ulcers started to heal within 2 weeks of the first cycle of chemotherapy and were completely hea

The first classifications deviding B- and T-cell lymphomas were given with the Kiel classification and in the classification of Lukes and Collins. Those entities first described like T-zone lymphomas or T-CLL are the rarest types of the known entities today. The updated Kiel classification contained a large number of especially nodal peripheral T-cell lymphomas and seperated lymphoblastic ones from those which derive from peripheral T-cells. The increasing knowledge on T-cell differentiation allowed a more detailed description of entities according either to their primary organ manifestation (

BACKGROUND: The number of failing organs systems in ICU patients with haematological malignancy is associated with outcome. The objective of this study was to assess short and long-term survival in these patients with special reference to multiple organ failure reflected by the SOFA (Sequential Organ Failure Assessment) score.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review of haematological patients admitted to the 10-bed intensive care unit (ICU) of a tertiary level academic teaching hospital from 1994 to 1998. Of 31 admitted patients with the diagnosis of haematological malignancy, the charts of 30 we

The R.E.A.L. classification was largely adopted recently by the proposed WHO classification. The usefulness of this classification in cutaneous T cell and natural killer (NK) cell lymphomas in Korea was evaluated compared to that of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) classification. Overall, 78 patients with cutaneous T cell and NK cell lymphomas were diagnosed in Asan Medical Center in the 1990's. The clinical records, slides of H&E and immunohistochemical stainings were reviewed. By the proposed WHO classification, mycosis fungoides (20 cases), lymphomatoi

T-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) represent approximately 10-15% of all lymphomas diagnosed in Western countries. Significant progress has been made over the last 2 decades in defining non-random chromosomal abnormalities. Cytogenetic and molecular analyses have enhanced diagnostic capabilities as well as improved classification and prognostication for T-cell NHL. Gamma-delta T-cell receptor (TCR) clonality now represents the more common TCR rearrangement in subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SCPTCL), hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma (HSTCL), extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal t

A 45-year-old female patient discussed herein had a multifocal, alopecia areata of inflammatory character. Histological findings first suggested histiocyte cytophagic panniculitis, although a "burned-out" panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma could not be excluded. After a two-year follow-up period assessment of the T-cell receptor gene rearrangement verified the diagnosis of subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma. This case is interesting because of its isolated manifestation and a long-standing, benign course of the disease.

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T cell lymphoma (SPTCL), designated recently as a distinct clinicopathologic entity in the World Health Organization Classification, is a neoplasm composed of cytotoxic T-cells that preferentially involves subcutaneous adipose tissue. Histologically, SPTCL is characterized by extensive karyorrhectic debris and tumor necrosis suggesting that apoptotic mechanisms are involved in its pathogenesis. We assessed the apoptotic index (AI) and proliferation rate (PR) of 13 cases of SPTCL by TUNEL test and Ki-67 immunostaining, respectively. We also immunohistochemically a

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) is a rare type of peripheral T-cell-derived lymphoma. A 30-year-old Japanese woman presented, complaining of skin lesions on her left hip. The cellular constituents in this SPTCL were of a mixed population. Not only tumor lymphoid cells, but also many macrophages, endothelial, fibroblasts, and fat cells were seen. The tumor cells immunostained positive for CD3 and CD8, but negative for CD4. Cytotoxic injury granule-related antigens of TIA-1 and granzyme B were positive in tumor cells. CD30. CD56, EBNA-2, LMP-1, CD20cy, and CD68 were all ne
