Curative combination chemotherapy is available for many patients with aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL); however, treatment of elderly patients with these regimens is difficult due to excessive toxicity. From 1983 to 1988 the authors treated 26 patients 65 years and older with aggressive NHL with a novel 8-week chemotherapy regimen containing bleomycin, etoposide, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, methotrexate with leucovorin, and prednisone (BECALM), designed to preserve dose intensity and minimize toxicity. Small bowel obstruction (SBO) as a late complication of the treatment of Hodgkin's disease was found in 32 of 398 (8%) patients followed over a 20 year period. The vast majority of these patients had an initial staging laparotomy as part of staging protocols. Of 95 young patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma treated at the National Cancer Institute on Pediatric Branch Protocol 7704, 18 (18.9%) had bone marrow involvement prior to treatment. Fine-needle aspirates from 12 cases of malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the oral cavity were cytologically classified according to the Kiel classification. Ten lymphomas were high-grade and two were classified as being low-grade malignancies. Data in the Stockholm Regional Cancer Register were compared with death certificates for persons who died of carcinoma in 1978 and were domiciled in Stockholm County. Female C57Bl/6 mice were exposed to 300 ppm benzene 6 hr/day, 5 days/week for 16 weeks and then held for lifetime observation. Sixty-four weeks after commencement of the study, 10 of 90 exposed mice had died as opposed to only 1 of 88 controls. Of the 10 exposed mice that died, 6 had thymic lymphomas, 2 had unspecified lymphomas, 1 was killed when moribund and found leukemia-free, and 1 was undiagnosed due to autolysis and partial cannibalization. The single dead control animal did not have lymphoma or leukemia. These data provide proof of the leukemogenicity of benzene in female C57Bl/6 mice.

A group of 637 golden hamsters [Mesocricetus auratus] was studied and 64 of them found suffering from wet tail syndrome. They had a regional epithelial proliferation of the gut often reminding of a tumour associated with unspecified bacilliform organisms in enterocytes. Three adult females showed a similar lesion lacking of microbes with intestinal adenocarcinoma instead. Its diffuse growth reaching mesentery was combined with secondaries in mesenteric lymph nodes. Nine older hamsters showed a malignant intestinal lymphoma in similar conditions. Mutual relations of the findings were discussed.
