Italian cancer figures, report 2012: Cancer in children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: This study describes up-to-date cancer incidence and survival in Italian paediatric and adolescent patients, based on data collected by the network of Italian cancer registries (AIRTUM). It updates the monograph published on the same topic in 2008. The main objective of this monograph is to present the statistics according to standard rigorous epidemiological methods and disseminate them to a wide range of readers, including the lay public. Given the deep impact of the 2008 monograph on the general public, in this update we complement descriptive statistics with additional data and

The spectrum of T-cell and natural killer/T-cell neoplasms with leukaemic presentation in a single institution in Taiwan.

T cell and natural killer (NK)/T-cell neoplasms are rare and may occasionally present as leukaemia. We retrospectively searched T cell and NK/T-cell tumours in a single institution in Taiwan from January 2000 to December 2009 and identified 137 (19.1%) patients with T cell and NK/T-cell tumours among 718 patients with lymphoid neoplasms. Among these 137 patients, 18 (13.1%) presented with leukaemia including T-lymphoblastic lymphoma/leukaemia (T-LBL), T-cell prolymphocytic leukaemia, aggressive NK-cell leukaemia, adult T-cell lymphoma/leukaemia (ATLL), T-cell large granular lymphocytic (T-LGL)

Childhood leukaemia and socioeconomic status in England and Wales 1976-2005: evidence of higher incidence in relatively affluent communities persists over time.

BACKGROUND: Record-based studies have generally reported association of higher childhood leukaemia incidence with higher socioeconomic status (SES), but recent findings are less consistent. METHODS: We examined records from the National Registry of Childhood Tumours for evidence of this association in England and Wales during 1976-2005. All eligible leukaemia registrations (N=11940) were grouped by year of diagnosis in decades centred on census years 1981, 1991 and 2001 (N=3748, 3922, 4270, respectively). Using data from the census appropriate to the decade, SES for each case was measured by

A meta-analysis of the association between day-care attendance and childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

BACKGROUND: Childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) may be the result of a rare response to common infection(s) acquired by personal contact with infected individuals. A meta-analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between day-care attendance and risk of childhood ALL, specifically to address whether early-life exposure to infection is protective against ALL. METHODS: Searches of the PubMed database and bibliographies of publications on childhood leukaemia and infections were conducted. Observational studies of any size or location and published in English resulted in the inc

A critical analysis of prognostic factors in North American patients with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1-associated adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma: a multicenter clinicopathologic experience and new prognostic score.

BACKGROUND: To define the clinicopathologic and prognostic features of patients with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1)-associated adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) in North America, standard criteria were used to identify patients with ATLL. METHODS: Statistical analyses used included descriptive statistics, Kaplan-Meir survival analysis, and recursive partitioning. RESULTS: Eighty-nine patients were identified between August 1992 and May 2007, including 37 (41.6%) males and 52 (58.4%) females with a median age of 50 years (range, 22-82 years). Distribution of lymphoid neoplasms in the Republic of Korea: analysis of 5318 cases according to the World Health Organization classification.

Compared with the West, the overall incidence of lymphoid neoplasms is lower, and the subtype distribution is distinct in Asia. To comprehensively investigate the subtype distribution with the age and sex factors, and temporal changes of subtype proportions, we re-assessed all patients with lymphoid neoplasms diagnosed at a large oncology service in the Republic of Korea from 1989 to 2008 using the World Health Organization classifications. Of the total 5,318 patients, 66.9% had mature B-cell neoplasms, 12.5% had mature T/natural killer (NK)-cell neoplasms, 16.4% had precursor lymphoblastic le

Mortality from malignant diseases-update of the Baltimore union poultry cohort.

We previously studied mortality up to 1989 in 2,639 members of a local union who had ever worked in poultry slaughtering and processing plants, because they were exposed to oncogenic viruses present in poultry. In this report, cancer mortality was updated to the year 2003 for 2,580 of the 2,639 subjects who worked exclusively in poultry plants. Mortality in poultry workers was compared with that in the US general population through the estimation of proportional mortality and standardized mortality ratios separately for each race/sex group and for the whole cohort. Compared to the US general p

Usefulness of flow cytometry for differential diagnosis of precursor and peripheral T-cell and NK-cell lymphomas: analysis of 490 cases.

Although various CD markers have been analyzed in T-cell and natural killer (NK)-cell lymphomas, the sensitivity and specificity of these phenotypic features have not been satisfactorily characterized. Flow cytometry (FCM) was used to determine the phenotypic pattern of 490 T/NK-cell lymphomas with the aid of a set of surface antigens (CD2, CD3, CD4, CD5, CD7, CD8, CD10, CD11c, CD16, CD19, CD20, CD25, CD30, CD34, and CD56). In data obtained from 319 patients, CD10 expression was detected in 57% of angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphomas, CD30 in 93% of anaplastic large cell lymphomas, CD34 in 50%

Simultaneous occurrence of peripheral T-cell lymphoma unspecified and B-cell small lymphocytic lymphoma. Report of 2 cases.

We report on 2 composite lymphomas occurring in elderly patients, morphologically characterized by the combination of peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) unspecified and B-cell small lymphocytic lymphoma. Immunohistochemistry provided objective confirmation of the coexistence of the 2 malignancies, as did molecular biology by revealing clonal T-cell receptor gamma and immunoglobulin heavy chain gene rearrangements. One of the patients had no history of indolent lymphoma either at the personal and family level, whereas the other showed a strong familial predisposition, his mother and sister havin

[Bone marrow-restricted involvement of T-cell granular lymphocyte leukemia].

A 66-year-old female was referred to our hospital with bone pain and progressive pancytopenia with granular lymphocyte infiltration only in the bone marrow (BM). Flow cytometric and histological analyses revealed that these cells were positive for CD3, TCRalphabeta, granzyme B, and the diagnosis of T-cell granular lymphocyte leukemia (T-GLL) with myelofibrosis was made. These BM granular lymphocytes were greatly ruffled and showed the CD3/CD20 double positive phenotype, which was not detected in the peripheral blood. The patient was treated with a single course of fludarabine followed by a fav

Novel t(5;9)(q33;q22) fuses ITK to SYK in unspecified peripheral T-cell lymphoma.

Among peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCL), the heterogeneous category of unspecified PTCL represents the most common subtype. Nevertheless, recurrent chromosomal translocations are unknown in this aggressive type of lymphoma. Here we describe a novel t(5;9)(q33;q22) in unspecified PTCL. Molecular analyses delineated the breakpoints to ITK and SYK resulting in a previously undescribed expression of the Syk tyrosine kinase by Itk. ITK-SYK transcripts were detected in five of 30 (17%) unspecified PTCL, but not in cases of angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (n=9) and anaplastic lymphoma kinase-nega

[A cytological, immunophenotypical and cytogenetical study of 136 consecutive cases of B-cell chronic lymphoid hemopathies].

A cytological, immunophenotypical and cytogenetical study of 136 chronic B-cell proliferations (93 CLL, 43 B-cell lymphomas) was led in order to precise diagnosis and to characterize and appreciate chromosomal rearrangements. In this series, mainly selected on blood lymphocytosis criteria, B-CLL were twice more frequent than small B-cell lymphomas. Probes used revealed cryptic abnormalities, which remained unknown by conventional cytogenetics (CC). The frequency of clonal abnormalities (CC and FISH) was 74.8% for this series, with 74.4% for lymphomas and 75.3% for CLL, mainly of Binet stage A

Leukaemia incidence and survival in children and adolescents in Europe during 1978-1997. Report from the Automated Childhood Cancer Information System project.

Leukaemias constitute approximately one-third of cancers in children (age 0-14 years) and 10% in adolescents (age 15-19 years). Geographical patterns (1988-1997) and time trends (1978-1997) of incidence and survival from leukaemias in children (n=29,239) and adolescents (n=1929) were derived from the ACCIS database, including data from 62 cancer registries in 19 countries across Europe. The overall incidence rate of leukaemia in children was 44 per million person-years during 1988-1997. Lymphoid leukaemia (LL) accounted for 81%, acute non-lymphocytic leukaemia (ANLL) for 15%, chronic myeloid l

The frequency of B- and T-cell gene rearrangements and epstein-barr virus in T-cell lymphomas: a comparison between angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma and peripheral T-cell lymphoma, unspecified with and without associated B-cell proliferations.

We report on a series of 58 cases of angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AILT) and 59 cases of peripheral T-cell lymphoma, unspecified (PTCL-NOS). Subsets of cases from both diagnostic groups were complicated by associated B-cell proliferations, and we performed B- and T-cell clonality studies and in situ hybridization for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) to investigate the relationship between B-cell proliferation, B-cell clonality, and EBV. Using multiplex polymerase chain reaction assays based on the BIOMED-2 collaborative study, we detected TCRgamma T-cell clones in 78 and 81% of AILT and PTCL-NOS

Powerful strategy for polymerase chain reaction-based clonality assessment in T-cell malignancies Report of the BIOMED-2 Concerted Action BHM4 CT98-3936.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assessment of clonal T-cell receptor (TCR) and immunoglobulin (Ig) gene rearrangements is an important diagnostic tool in mature T-cell neoplasms. However, lack of standardized primers and PCR protocols has hampered comparability of data in previous clonality studies. To obtain reference values for Ig/TCR rearrangement patterns, 19 European laboratories investigated 188 T-cell malignancies belonging to five World Health Organization-defined entities. The TCR/Ig spectrum of each sample was analyzed in duplicate in two different laboratories using the standardized
