Semiquantitative analysis of lactoferrin deficiency in neutrophil polymorphonuclear leucocytes in various haematological and non-haematological disease was carried out by scoring polymorphonuclear leucocytes stained for lactoferrin by the immunoperoxidase method. The staining patterns for lactoferrin were classified into four types (0-III) based on the intensity of reaction, and the sum of the ratings of 100 polymorphonuclear leucocytes was considered as "lactoferrin score" with a possible range of 0-300. The serum concentration of free kappa and lambda light chains of immunoglobulins were measured in 114 patients with myelo- and lymphoproliferative disorders including multiple myeloma. A case of acute myelomonocytic leukaemia in pregnancy with successful outcome is reported. Aspects of management are reviewed, especially with regard to expected complications following cytostatic therapy and the effects on both mother and fetus. The need to determine the optimal time for elective delivery is emphasized. The seasons for formation of an international tumour registry are outlined. The disease can no longer be regarded as invariably fatal for mother and child.

The occurrence of soluble immune complexes (IC) was investigated in 177 serum samples from 92 patients with various leukaemias using the Raji cell immunoassay. A 55-year-old man was treated during 22 months with chlorambucil (total dose : 4 218 g) for glomerulonephritis. Towards the end of the treatment, he developed acute myelomonocytic leukaemia and died of this complication. Development of acute myeloid leukaemia in 2 patients given long-term lithium treatment for affective illness is reported. The 1st was a 49-year-old man who was found to have acute myelomonocytic leukaemia after about 1 year of lithium treatment. He died 2 days after admission from haemorrhagic pericarditis. The 2nd patients was a 32-year-old woman given lithium for about 12 years. Thereafter she developed acute myeloid leukaemia within a few months. A remission induction regime with daunorubicin and cytosine arabinoside was successful and she is now in a full remission state.

The serum concentration of beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2-m) was measured in 69 patients with acute or chronic lympho- and myeloproliferative disorders.
