The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of micro ribonucleic acid (miR)-195 on myocardial infarction (MI) in rats via regulating the transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1)/Smad signaling pathway. A total of 36 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into a normal group (n=12), a model group (n=12) and an miR-195 antagomir group (n=12). In the normal group, the heart was exposed only, and normal saline was intraperitoneally injected after operation. In the model group, the acute MI model was established. In the miR-195 antagomir group, the acute MI model was also established, and

ELISA antibody titers against Rhodococcus equi strain ATCC 6939 were measured in serum samples collected from 644 horses aged 1-21 years at 13 provinces and the capital of Mongolia, of which 631 (98%) samples showed values of approximately zero. The mean antibody titers in the 14 areas ranged from -0.08 to -0.01. Nine samples (1.4%) exhibited titers of 0.1-0.2, and surprisingly, four horses (0.6%) each aged 2, 5, 8, and 9 years demonstrated positive values in the range of 0.3-0.8. Considering the age resistance characteristic of this disease, the positive horses were hypothesized to exhibit no

BACKGROUND: Glanders is a chronic zoonosis caused by Burkholderia mallei (BM). The main sources of infection are infected horses, mules, donkeys and other single-hoofed equine animals. There is currently no commercial vaccine for glanders, so the mortality rate of animals with this disease is extremely high. The prevalence of the disease is due mainly to improper border trade quarantine, so early diagnosis of the disease is crucial for epidemic prevention and control. RESULTS: In this study, a one-step isothermal amplification detection method based on RPA and CRISPR was developed for BM targe

Glanders, a zoonotic disease caused by Burkholderia mallei, has re-emerged in Mongolia after decades of control. We conducted nationwide serosurveillance from 2021 to 2024 to assess the prevalence and geographic distribution of glanders. Using random 3-stage cluster sampling, we collected 3,001 horse serum samples from 332 herds. Those herds were in 46 soums (administrative districts equivalent to counties) in 13 provinces and in 3 districts in Ulaanbaatar. Sera were tested using the complement fixation test, and positive results were confirmed by immunoblotting and ELISA. Overall seroprevalen

Glanders is a zoonotic disease caused by Burkholderia mallei (Bm). Bm is phylogenetically similar to B. pseudomallei (Bp), the causative agent of melioidosis, making it difficult to differentiate between them. Recently, the PCR method recommended by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) failed to detect a Kuwait strain of Bm, and the WOAH has cautioned that ongoing Bm evolution may lead to the emergence of variants that escape standard assays. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a novel real-time PCR method to discriminate between Bm and Bp. Local and web-based BLAST searches iden

The equine parvovirus hepatitis (EqPV-H) was initially linked to fatal cases of equine serum hepatitis but, more recently, it has also been detected in sick or asymptomatic horses around the world, including in a limited number of horses in southeastern Brazil. In this study we aimed to assess the prevalence of EqPV-H DNA in the serum of healthy horses in the northern region of Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. For this purpose, we used 1000 serum samples collected from horses from 40 municipalities and organized them into 200 pools of five samples each, based on origin and age. Using a nested

The Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) comprises a diverse group of opportunistic pathogens that are critically relevant to human and animal health. Bcc induces life-threatening infections of the lung in human patients with cystic fibrosis and chronic granulomatous disease and causes mastitis and abscesses in sheep and goats. Therefore, this research aimed to identify the presence of Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) in goats in Bangladesh using serological tests such as the Glanders Rapid Detection Test Kit (GRDTK) and Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and molecular tests such as PCR

UNLABELLED: Glanders is a contagious zoonotic disease caused by Burkholderia mallei that primarily affects horses, donkeys, and mules. It remains endemic in parts of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and South America, where increasing case reports highlight the need for accessible diagnostic tools. Conventional diagnostic methods are limited by high costs and specialized laboratory requirements, whereas lateral flow assays (LFAs) offer practical, user-friendly, and rapid alternatives. In this study, we developed three LFAs targeting antibodies against the B. mallei antigens Hcp1, GroEL, and whol

Glanders, a major zoonotic disease declared eradicated in China, still faces the risk of external reintroduction. The complement fixation test (CFT) is a key serological diagnostic method for glanders. To address the limitations of conventional CFT, such as high reagent consumption, cumbersome titration procedures, and frequent occurrence of atypical partial hemolysis leading to ambiguous interpretation, this study developed a more economical, user-friendly, and clearly interpretable micro-complement fixation test (mCFT). According to the WOAH guidelines and Chinese agricultural industry stand

Burkholderia pseudomallei (Bp) and Burkholderia mallei (Bm) are the etiological agents of the fatal diseases melioidosis and glanders, respectively. No licensed vaccine is available to protect against these facultative intracellular bacteria and treatment of infection is difficult, requiring intensive and prolonged antimicrobial therapy with low success rates due to intrinsic resistance of Bp and Bm to most antibiotics. This, combined with concerns regarding their adversarial use as biological warfare agents, emphasize an immediate need to identify novel and effective countermeasures for the o

Glanders (malleus), a highly contagious zoonotic disease caused by Burkholderia mallei, remains an important transboundary disease of equids despite extensive control efforts in many countries. However, its epidemiological patterns and associated drivers have not been comprehensively synthesized. This study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of glanders in horses and identify key epidemiological drivers based on studies published up to April 27, 2026. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, systematic searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, ProQu

INTRODUCTION: Ethiqa XR is an extended-release formulation of the potent partial opioid buprenorphine and has been FDA-indexed for mice and other laboratory animal species to relieve pain. Unfortunately, the use of analgesia may produce confounding effects that distort physiological and pathophysiological responses during laboratory animal studies. Since various reports have indicated that Ethiqa XR can affect the inflammatory response in several in vivo models, we sought to evaluate the effects of Ethiqa XR treatment on the immune response to and disease pathogenesis associated with bacterial

INTRODUCTION: Yersinia pestis is the etiologic agent of plague, and the disease is categorized into several forms, including bubonic, septicemic, and pneumonic. Plague meningitis is a rare but severe complication and estimated to occur in 6-11% of documented cases. It is most frequently observed in bubonic plague patients under 15 years old that receive inadequate or no antibiotic treatment. To date, there are no reports describing plague meningitis in laboratory animal models of pneumonic plague.
METHODS: Therefore, we sought to use the BALB/c mouse pneumonic plague model to investigate cent

Melioidosis, caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, is an under-recognized infection in India that frequently mimics tuberculosis and pyogenic infections, leading to diagnostic delays. Neurological melioidosis is rare but associated with significant morbidity and mortality. We describe three culture-confirmed cases of melioidosis encountered over a three-month period at a tertiary care center in eastern India. This series is, to our knowledge, the first from eastern India to document a temporally clustered, culture-confirmed spectrum of melioidosis, ranging from systemic bacteremic to fulminant

BACKGROUND: Melioidosis is a life-threatening infectious disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, endemic to southeast Asia and northern Australia. Serological tests targeting haemolysin co-regulated protein 1 (Hcp1) and O-polysaccharide (OPS) antigens have shown promise for diagnosis and surveillance, but their interpretation is limited by an incomplete understanding of antibody persistence following infection. To address this gap, we aimed to characterise post-infection decay dynamics of Hcp1 and OPS-specific IgG and IgA antibodies to improve diagnostic interpretation and population-leve

Melioidosis is a potentially fatal tropical infection caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei. Although well described in Southeast Asia and northern Australia, its burden in South America remains poorly characterized and likely underestimated. A case of severe disseminated melioidosis in a 35-year-old man with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus residing in the Peruvian Amazon is reported here. The patient presented multifocal pneumonia, bacteremia, and septic shock requiring mechanical ventilation and vasopressor support. During hospitalization, he developed cutaneous microabscesses and septic a
