UNLABELLED: Gel-filtration and immunodiffusion reveal most patients with disseminated cancer excrete 100 to 1000 mg/day of urine proteins, mol wt 10,000-60,000, which are distinct from known plasma proteins and cancer-related antigens. Fifteen patients with acute leukemia resistant to standard chemotherapy were treated by bone marrow transplantation from HLA-matched siblings after conditioning with a new combination chemotherapy/radiation therapy regimen--SCARI. SCARI consists of 5 days of high-dose cytosine arabinoside and 6-thioguanine followed by 3 days of daunorubicin. After a rest period, cyclophosphamide and total-body irradiation are given sequentially. This regimen had acceptable morbidity. Median survival was 169 days. Four murine monocyte, myelomonocyte, and histiocyte or macrophage tumor cell lines adapted to culture were growth inhibited by one or more of the following macrophage-activating substances: Mycobacterium bovis, Bacillus Calmette-Guérin strain, zymosan, lipopolysaccharide, and dextran sulfate, as well as tuberculin purified protein derivative, but not latex beads. Electrolyte disturbances in leukemia can be the result of the disease process or drug therapy. One group of electrolyte abnormalities is related to the stage of the leukemic process. Included in this group are newly diagnosed patients who may show elevated serum potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium--a result of their release from malignant cells after cytotoxic therapy or their accumulation due to urate nephropathy. The proliferative behaviour of leukaemic cells from the peripheral blood of 12 patients suffering from acute leukaemia was investigated in short term liquid culture. In 3 cases of AML an increase of the blast cell number was observed exceeding the initial value whereas in 9 other cases the cell number decreased more or less rapidly. Of 3 cats with monocytic leukemia, 1 responded favorably to treatment with cytosine arabinoside. With supportive therapy, it lived 78 days from the time of diagnosis, at which time it developed dyspnea and signs of toxicosis and died. The other 2 cats did not respond to treatment and died 4 and 16 days from time of diagnosis. Prior to death, they were bleeding from injection sites, and their blood had greater than 200,000 WBC/mm3. Necropsy of those 2 cats revealed extensive perivascular hemorrhagic infarcts within the cerebellum, medulla, and cerebrum.

Two cases of acute leukaemia, one monoblastic and one myelomonocytic, in which hypokalaemia, hypomagnesaemia and hypocalcaemia were documented, are reported. Urinalysis demonstrated renal loss of potassium and magnesium without other evidence of renal tubular dysfunction. Twenty cases of acute monoblastic leukemia are studied according to definite criterias: cytology, cytochemical staining, lysozyme production. The study points out the tumoral characters: hematodermy, gingivitis, central nervous system leukemia and the lack of important bone marrow incompetence. 47 per cent of complete remissions are obtained with daunorubicin, aracytin combination therapy.
