4 cases of chronic monocytic leukemia were observed during several years. In 2 patients there was a final appearance of blastic crisis. During the course of the disease the activity of the naphthylacetate-esterase in the monocytes increased, but the PAS-reaction was lowered. By the help of two cases for comparison - one patient suffering from a chronic myeloid leukemia and intermediate monocytic phase, the other one from a panmyelopathia and monocytic reaction - the morphological resemblance of these phenomena is demonstrated, which cytochemically cannot be separated.

An androgen (stanozolol: 0,15 mg/kg/d) was systematically associated to the treatment of acute non lymphoblastic leukemias, since the beginning of induction therapy (vincristin, daunorubicin, prednisone) and throughout the maintenance period (6-mercaptopurine and methotrexate). The value of the cytochemical beta-glucuronidase (beta-gluc.) reaction in the differential diagnosis of acute leukaemia was assessed in a series of 100 adult patients. 1. Tritiated folic acid (pteroylglutamic acid) was injected into rats whose livers were undergoing regeneration after partial hepatectomy, and into normal control rats. 2. The major form of labelled liver folate was found to be pteroylpentaglutamate in both hepatectomized and normal rats and there was no difference in the proportion of pteroylpentaglutamate to other forms of folate in the regenerating or resting liver. 3. Folate concentrations were also measured in leucocytes from normal and leukaemic patients. 4. Pteroylpolyglutamates constituted the main form of folate in both sets of cells.

In 11 cases of leukaemia or other lymphatic system disease meningeal affection occurred together with an oedema of optic papilla. In 6 patients (9 eyes) visual accuity fell down till 0.1 or worse. By irradiation of retrobulbar spaces in 4 of 5 cases a marked visual accuity improvement was obtained. This report describes the surface architecture of leukemic cells, as seen by scanning electron microscopy in 34 patients with acute nonlymphoblastic leukemia. During a large clinicopathologic study of acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL), ten patients were identified in whom the leukemic blasts demonstrated striking morphologic and cytochemical similarities and who seemed to form a specific subgroup of ANLL. Three cases of monocytic leukaemia in dogs are reported. Clinically, they all showed dullness, lymph node enlargement and hepato-spenomegaly and the overt illness was of short duration. Fetal hemoglobin (F) and hemoglobin A(2) were estimated in 35 patients with malignant hematological disorders. In 9 out of 10 patients with morphological and cytochemical features of acute myeloblastic leukemia the hemoglobin F was greater than 2%. Of the other 25 patients investigated only one patient with polycythemia rubra vera had a hemoglobin F level of more than 2%. Estimation of fetal hemoglobin may be of value in the classification of acute leukemias and the increased level observed probably reflects disturbed hemoglobin synthesis in the acute myeloblastic type.
