Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare, aggressive malignant neoplasm characterized by histiocytic features, frequently presenting in advanced clinical stages and associated with a poor prognosis. Although HS can occur sporadically or secondary to other hematological malignancies, cases with a long latency period have been rarely reported. This case report presents a unique case of secondary HS diagnosed 33 years and seven months after the initial diagnosis of B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Both neoplasms shared identical immunoglobulin heavy chain and T-cell receptor gene rearrang

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a tumor mass involving any extramedullary site composed of myeloid-lineage blasts with myeloid, myelomonocytic, or monocytic differentiation. Distinguishing MS from malignant histiocytic neoplasms (MHNs) is diagnostically challenging due to morphologic and immunophenotypic overlap, particularly for MS with monocytic differentiation, which can mimic MHNs, especially the subtypes of histiocytic sarcoma and interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma, leading to potential misdiagnosis and inappropriate management. Cyclin D1 overexpression is implicated in MHNs, but its utility

BACKGROUND Histiocytic sarcoma is a rare and aggressive hematopoietic malignancy, characterized by tumor cells exhibiting features of histiocytes or dendritic cells. Extranodal involvement, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract, skin, and soft tissues, is common and often associated with aggressive clinical behavior and poor outcomes. Due to its rarity, no standardized treatment has been established. Current therapeutic approaches are generally adapted from aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma protocols, typically involving multi-agent chemotherapy. However, therapeutic responses are often sub

Feline oral histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is an exceptionally rare malignancy with limited clinical characterization and a poor prognosis. This report describes a case of mandibular HS in a 6-year-old Ragdoll cat that achieved a favorable local control following surgical management alone. The cat presented with left mandibular swelling, and diagnostic imaging revealed a poorly demarcated mass with extensive osteolysis of the mandible. Histopathological and immunohistochemical findings supported the diagnosis of a poorly differentiated malignant mesenchymal neoplasm with histiocytic differentiation.

Histiocytic sarcoma is an extremely rare malignancy typically presenting in extranodal sites, including the gastrointestinal tract, lung, nasal cavity, and soft tissue. Primary presentation in the skin is an even rarer entity, with only one prior case reported in the eyelid skin. Herein, we describe a case of histiocytic sarcoma that presented in the eyelid of an 80-year-old man. The lesion presented as a rapidly growing left lower eyelid lesion over 4 months. Shave biopsy revealed histologic and immunophenotypic findings most consistent with a morphologically low-grade histiocytic sarcoma. Co

A 12-year-old neutered male Domestic Shorthair Cat, negative for feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukaemia virus, was presented to the veterinary hospital with a 3-week history of anorexia, lethargy, abdominal pain and intermittent vomiting. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a heterogeneous, poorly demarcated mass in the right mesogastric region, involving the pancreas and adjacent organs. Cytological evaluation of the abdominal fluid revealed a neoplastic effusion consistent with carcinomatosis. Given the poor prognosis, the cat was euthanized and submitted for necropsy, which revea

BACKGROUND: Cryptococcus neoformans is an opportunistic fungus with marked neurotropism, classically affecting immunocompromised patients, even though occasionally reported in immunocompetent hosts. Skull involvement is exceptionally rare and may radiologically mimic malignant tumors, causing diagnostic delays.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 34-year-old immunocompetent male presented with a painless, progressive left parieto-occipital scalp swelling over 3 weeks. Imaging revealed a well-defined, dumbbell-shaped cystic mass beneath the scalp, causing lytic skull erosion and limited intracranial extension

Background and Clinical Significance: Histiocytic sarcoma is a rare and aggressive hematopoietic malignancy, which is particularly uncommon in the head and neck region and exceedingly rare within lymph nodes associated with salivary glands. The present study aims to describe the clinical, radiologic, histopathologic, and immunophenotypic features of a primary histiocytic sarcoma, arising in a lymph node within the submandibular gland, and to highlight the diagnostic challenges and management considerations through a correlation with the existing literature. Case presentation: This case report

Primary hepatic histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is an exceptionally rare malignancy with nonspecific clinical and morphological features that often mimic other high-grade liver tumors making their diagnosis challenging. We report a 74-year-old man presenting with abdominal and back pain, fatigue, and a solitary right-lobe hepatic mass. Imaging suggested hepatocellular carcinoma, and the patient underwent right posterior sectionectomy. Histopathology revealed a high-grade neoplasm of discohesive large cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm and extensive necrosis. Immunohistochemistry confirmed HS. Given th

Neoplasms of histiocytes and dendritic cells are rare, and their phenotypic and biological definition is incomplete. Seeking to identify antigens detectable in paraffin-embedded sections that might allow a more complete, rational immunophenotypic classification of histiocytic/dendritic cell neoplasms, the International Lymphoma Study Group (ILSG) stained 61 tumours of suspected histiocytic/dendritic cell type with a panel of 15 antibodies including those reactive with histiocytes (CD68, lysozyme (LYS)), Langerhans cells (CD1a), follicular dendritic cells (FDC: CD21, CD35) and S100 protein. BACKGROUND Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare and aggressive hematopoietic malignancy characterized by histiocytic cell proliferation. Its rarity and nonspecific presentation create significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, particularly in HIV-positive patients. CASE REPORT An HIV-positive man in his late 20s from a rural area and low-income background, referred from a district hospital, presented with asymptomatic nodular and crateriform lesions on the face, thorax, and back, characterized by central keratosis, crust, and erythematous-violaceous infiltrated edges. Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is an aggressive hematological malignancy whose transformed cells exhibit morphological and immunophenotypic characteristics similar to macrophages, and arises de novo or as part of a clonal 'evolution' of other pre-existing hematological neoplasms. This study investigates the potential use of the J774A.1 cell line (a cell line derived from murine tumor cells, commonly used in macrophage research) as a research model to study the role of polydisperse extracellular vesicles (PEVs) secreted by the HS cells, considering that bacterial infections are common in patients wit

Atomoxetine (Strattera(R)) is a selective norepinephrine (noradrenaline) reuptake inhibitor that is not classified as a stimulant, and is indicated for use in patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Atomoxetine is effective and generally well tolerated. It is significantly more effective than placebo and standard current therapy and does not differ significantly from or is noninferior to immediate-release methylphenidate; however, it is significantly less effective than the extended-release methylphenidate formulation OROS(R) methylphenidate (hereafter referred to as osm

A 20-year-old neutered male ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) diagnosed with an intrathoracic mass died during surgical excision. Morphological characteristics of the mass during necropsy were consistent with a mediastinal abscess in the left hemithorax. Histological examination identified a disseminated histiocytic sarcoma involving spleen, kidneys, multiple lymph nodes, diaphragm and parietal pleura, as well as a concurrent follicular lymphoma in a separate lymph node. A mixed metastatic infiltrate composed of both neoplasms was found within the capsule of the intrathoracic abscess. Immunohist

Background: Dendritic and histiocytic cell sarcoma (DHCS) and clear cell sarcoma (CCS) are ultra-rare soft-tissue sarcomas characterized by diagnostic ambiguity, limited treatment guidelines, and poor outcomes. Their rarity has restricted the development of evidence-based management strategies, leaving clinical decisions reliant on small case series and institutional experience. DHCS typically presents without a unifying molecular driver and is often misclassified without comprehensive immunophenotyping. CCS is defined by EWSR1-ATF1/CREB1 fusions but exhibits low responsiveness to conventional

ObjectivesTarsal tumours are rare, but previous reports suggest a predilection for round cell tumours (RCTs) and soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) in this region. This study aimed to determine the proportion of RCTs among feline tarsal neoplasms, refine classification through histological revision and immunohistochemistry (IHC), assess potential risk factors and evaluate clinical outcomes based on tumour histotypes.MethodsA retrospective analysis of feline tarsal neoplasms diagnosed between 2010 and 2024 was conducted. Signalment, history, treatment and outcomes were collected for RCTs and STSs. All

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) drive cancer progression and metastasis. However, the mechanisms by which tumor cells shape TAM phenotypes in canine cancers remain poorly understood. We investigated correlations between cancer cell gene expression and macrophage polarization to identify potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Tumor-conditioned media from 25 canine cancer cell lines were applied to monocyte-derived macrophages from three canine donors for 24 hours. Following washout, supernatants were analyzed for immunomodulatory cytokines and chemokines. Each cell line's polarizatio

BACKGROUND: Testicular tumors are relatively uncommon urogenital malignancies, accounting for only 1-2% of all cancers in men, with germ cell tumors representing the predominant histopathological subtype. Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare and aggressive malignancy that typically arises in extranodal sites, and its standard treatment strategy has yet to be established. Here, we report a rare case of testicular histiocytic sarcoma, which has been sparsely documented in previous studies and for which clinical experience remains limited, thereby providing valuable insights into its diagnostic cha

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS)-an aggressive hematopoietic malignancy originating from dendritic cells or cells of the macrophage lineage with gross and histologic features that overlap with other neoplasms in laboratory rodents-is a diagnostic challenge in exotic species. HS has not been reported previously in the Brazilian red-rumped agouti (Dasyprocta leporina), to our knowledge. Here, we describe a case of an agouti in which the primary differential diagnosis, based on its location and gross appearance, was chemodectoma. Although the mass grossly resembled a neuroendocrine tumor, histologic and
